View Full Version : What is the trick to the Thor Chamber?
I can't seem to get past it... no matter where I step the lightning hits me.
Don't you have to jump onto the squares that are sticking up or something? I have not played this level of TR1 in a while..
I found this video.. bad quality, but it might help you :D

I was completely stuck, just like you are. But I found out for myself that if you do a dive, then quickly do another once Lara is standing again, the lightening won't hit you :D
This honestly works :) and it's fast!
^^Embedding is disabled on that vid scremanie ;)
I'm sure I recall Toby Gard saying that there's no pattern or guaranteed way of getting past the "disco ball of death" in the Thor room. When I do it I just run through and jump, but 9 times out of 10 I'll get hit >.<

There are no "sticky out squares" in TR1. You've just gotta run for it.
aww.. I failed :(
I thought I was going to be cool and help :(

You did help. It only takes a second to click on the link and go to the actual YouTube page with that video :tmb:. It's not your fault the person who uploaded that vid disabled embedding ;)

I found the advice on TombRaiderHUB helpful! :)
Through THOR door - Return to the central structure and carefully drop to the lower platform. Go through the THOR door and follow the passage. When you enter the next room, lightning will start hitting the gray tiles on the floors. However, this does not mean that it will not hit Lara if she walks on the other (normal) tiles. To leave this room intact, go towards the right hand wall. Then turn left. Do not stay here for long, because the lightning may hit Lara. Now start running towards the gray tile ahead, but before reaching it, jump pressing the Walk button at the same time to perform the swan dive. That way, you will jump covering more distance, thus landing behind the pillar, where it is safe
(["http://www.tombraiderhub.com/tr1/images/folly7.jpg"]this screenshot[/URL] shows the procedure).
Hope it helps you. :wve:

YAY :yah:
It seems completely arbitrary and none of the advice I've heard really seems to work; the lightning goes right for you if you go anywhere near the middle and the grey tiles don't seem to do anything. The only real way around it is to stick to the wall, and sometimes even that doesn't work. Swan diving seems to help a lot for some reason, such that you can sometimes just dive right around the middle; it seem like it confuses the "AI" of the lightning or something.

The swan dive has invincibility frames built into the animation. It helps a lot. :D
This is why I hoard medipaks though. There's just some things (like this) that they're made for.

BTW, I got past just before you posted, scremanie. :vlol:
There's a safe spot if you jump to the right (Next to the wall) when you first enter the chamber... I think, anyway.
There is no "safe spot" or clever move to guarantee a safe passage through that room, like Toby referred to it, that Thor room is just a random death machine. As long as you ensure Lara's at full health she'll most likely make it (providing you jump your way through).
But good to hear you've done it tomblover :tmb:

I said that swan diving works earlier!

there is a safe way to do it. first go to the square to the right of the doorway and do a series of running jumps and you should get through un-scaved. I read it at stellas site.
Well i know the trick myself. There are 5 tiles on the floor the lightning will strike any tile. Picture the floor tiles as a pentagon inside the pentagon it'll strike too. Just make sure that lara doesn't go in the pentagon area in between the 5 tiles.
I run through and try not to die. I've tried going different ways to see if there is a trick to it, but I think you're guaranteed to get hit, no matter what you do.
Run/jump like mad to the next room is the only advice I have for you. :p

Well Squibbly What if you wanted to beat TR1 with no medi packs how would you evade getting hit in Thor room? Just take my advice from above ;)

In TRA you step on the 4 squares that stick up to open the way to the next room as far as I know, lighting always hits the highest section so you stay on the low sections. In TR1 I usually just run and jump, sometimes it worked. This is the way I found easiest on the PC, been years since I played it on the PS1, what ever you do do not touch the grey square or Lara is toast, jump just before it.

I am hopeless with the classic keyboard controls on the PC at the best of times, and having sore fingers today from a particularly angry Galah and a badly wielded crowbar Lara looks like she is a bit drunk!

Fexinspect shows that every damn square in the room triggers the lightning ball using LARA ON GROUND DO ACTIVATE. So it seems to me that a running jump into the room should get you halfway across before the ball is active; if it's true that swan diving has invincible frames, maybe two swan dives can get you across the room (I haven't tried this).
