Burma's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was found guilty of violating her house arrest when an American supporter, John Yettaw, swam to her guarded home in May and stayed for two days. She was sentenced to 3 years hard labor, but this was commuted to 18months house arrest in her home along Inya lake in Rangoon. John Yettaw was given 7 years hard labor.
It is widely believed that the military junta is keeping Daw Suu under house arrest to keep her out of the public until after the elections held next year.
