View Full Version : Einstein's Riddle

So do you think you can solve one of the hardest riddles in the history of mankind? This one was invented by Einstein. He wrote it during the early 19th Century and said that only 2% of the population would be able to solve it. I managed to solve it by sketching it out on Paint. Took a long time though.

See how you can do at it. :D

There are no tricks, just pure logic, so good luck and don't give up.

1. In a street there are five houses, painted five different colours.
2. In each house lives a person of different nationality
3. These five homeowners each drink a different kind of beverage, smoke different brand of cigar and keep a different pet.

THE QUESTION: WHO OWNS THE FISH?

HINTS

1. The Brit lives in a red house.
2. The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
3. The Dane drinks tea.
4. The Green house is next to, and on the left of the White house.
5. The owner of the Green house drinks coffee.
6. The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds.
7. The owner of the Yellow house smokes Dunhill.
8. The man living in the centre house drinks milk.
9. The Norwegian lives in the first house.
10. The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.
11. The man who keeps horses lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill.
12. The man who smokes Blue Master drinks beer.
13. The German smokes Prince.
14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
15. The man who smokes Blends has a neighbour who drinks water.

Patience is a virtue here. ;)

A collegue if mine handed me this riddle about a year ago. He was testing his team and none of them could work it out. After 10 minutes of crouching behind the filing cabinets "looking for something" while I worked it out, I gave him the answer. Its a neat riddle. :)

I've done this before

It helps to put the information into a table, for different house number, colour, nationality etc

You've got 15 of them. :ton:

Well, I might be able to help a bit. Tell me what part you're having trouble with. :p

I hope you've completed the first step. If you're using Paint to sketch it out, put a picture of a British flag inside a red square. Square symbolising a house. :p So you know that much, lol.

Also, the Norwegian lives in the first house, next to the blue house, meaning the blue house is the second house. Also, the Green house is to the left of the White house. So either the Green, White or Red (British) house is in the middle, which the owner of drinks milk. You figure it out. :p

Oh :p My cuz is saying that [POSSIBLE SPOILER]no one owns the fish [/PS] but I said that can't be it because it's not a trick question. Is it? :p

Ikas90
14-08-09, 13:53
Nope, it's not. :p Someone indeed does own the Fish.

Figured out what colour the Norwegians house is? :p

Too bad the Swede owns the dogs. :vlol:

Moving on. The man who smokes Blends and has horses, lives next to the one who smokes Dunhill and owns cats. Should be easy to figure out that one. You'll be able to figure out more and more as you go along. This is where the fun begins, yeah? :D

How do you know their nationalities? If it's so vague as to say "5 different nationalities" then everyone would have a different answer

OMG that was fun!

It took me a while :o, but I think I figured it out!
I don't think it has anything to do with being intelligent, but more with being patient. :vlol:

Anyway, it's the German!!! :D

I could only do it by drawing it on a piece of paper. Here is the puzzle solved:

It's also pretty cool how both Ikas and Love2Raid's methods of solving it were a little different. :D

If Einstein made it up...I'll never be able to solve it xD

I gave up after 20 seconds.

14-08-09, 17:03
I solved that when I was in junior high. It's not difficult at all and I'm not the brightest mind when it comes to riddles and practical thinking. Einstein wrote this in the 19th century and claimed only 2% of the population could solve it. Either he showed it to an unfortunate sample of population, or the people back then weren't as educated and familiar with riddles.

Love2Raid
14-08-09, 17:10
No. I think he just claimed that because he wanted people to try it and put more time and patience in it. Because solving it requires some of that. ;)
