All right, first things first: no matter what your mom or dad or grandparents told you, and no matter how much it may sound like the rolling waves, itís not actually the ocean youíre hearing in a shell.

Now that weíve got that out of the way, what exactly is it that youíre hearing? In a word, noise; the ambient noise thatís being produced all around and inside you, which you normally donít hear or pay attention to because itís too quiet.

Please read the rest of the article before posting.

Thats actually true!
Because I sometimes try to concetrate on myself and block out all other sounds around me, and I do hear that faint ambient kind of noise! :D

It can even happen if you cup your hands around your ears :D

I was trying to explain this before to someone and they still insisted it's a freaky way of "hearing the ocean for real and couldn't be explained". lol

I thought shells were magical as a child, but I grew out of that, and now after that tidbit of info, they do sorta seem magical now, thank you for sharing :)

I have no shells, so I used a cup instead. :p

I think it sounds like when there's quite a heavy wind blowing across your ears, that must be the air movement being amplified. I don't hear my own blood though.

If you put your hands over your ears, you can hear all your bodily functions.
