I think they had taken out the snakes teeth, you can see that it is trying to bite him but it has no effect :)

Is this some kind of bizarre Indian tradition?

Rai

^ This was what I was thinking.

If it is its a stupid tradition. Sorry, just how I feel

If not, stupid stupid parents.

I would guess that the child is part of this tribe (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1192122/Indian-village-children-young-taught-snake-charmers.html)

Geesus, thats sheer stupidity having a kid play with a friggin cobra

Well it's not really fair, that cobra got it's fangs plucked out thankfully!!! the only part of that article (thank you jackles :) ) that bothered me was that the women only care for the snakes when their husband or brother is gone, hardly snake charming, :S i wouldnt ever want to handle snakes, EVER!

If it werent so potentially disasterous, it would be kind of cute :/

I've seen this before, the baby wouldn't have been in any danger. They do it so the kid gets used to the snake at an early age. Still pretty freaky tho, I'm not a big fan of cobras.

They don't, from the article it says they get fed a mixture of herbs, which suppresses their poison, thus make them harmless. They said removing their fangs would be cruel ;)

I'm not sure if I believe that was the case for the video in the original post. A cobra's fangs would still be capable of hurting an infant, even without the poison.

yeah. even if there was no poison, the fangs would still penetrate.

this whole thing seems pretty cruel. not just for the kid but for the snake as well.

Surely the cobra could wrap itself around the child's neck and strangle it? :yik:

Not if that isn't part of it's natural hunting technique... and I don't believe it is. The Cobra would strike with it's fangs and rely on it's venom to take care of any threats... it wouldn't know any other way.

OK that was a bad idea, Indians are illiterate

I'm sure this is part of some sort of initiation of some sort. But I also saw this on Maury I think and someone said that the cobra's mouth was taped shut so it couldn't bite.

Are you sure that you meant illiterate Khalid? That means they can't read.

Though if you read the link I posted you will see that it is their culture, I think that they have done something to the snakes so that it looks worse than it seems.

OMG someone hold me!

I'm traumatized now. Especially at the end when it wrapped itself around the child. I don't care of the :cen: thing has 'suppressed' venom that's :cen: disturbing

They didn't according to the article Jacks posted they feel that's inhumane, so they feed it herbs to suppress the venom. But a Cobra has very very potent venom and it doesn't take much to kill someone let alone a child that size.

xx_Hunt_xx
25-08-09, 14:07
:yik: Thats terrible.
But if fangs been removed and it will cause no harm to baby, then its not in any danger. But its cruel to the snake to do so.

In no position to do so.

South Asian people by and large do not put their children in front of a cobra this is a tiny portion of Indian culture

Baby...and cobra...just should NOT go together!

Its just as dangerous when they have cobras raise using those flute things. ( not sure what those are called)

But a baby is not involved there, its an adult who has a choice whether to do that or not. Putting a cobra next to a baby is not right, the baby cant go tell them if they like it or not.
