View Full Version : My earliest Tomb Raider memories....

So, here it was. Sometime in early 1997, my nephew let me have a loan of his newish games console, this wee grey thing called a PlayStation.

Got my mate round, and we naturally migrated straight to the current FIFA game, being massive football fans. A few games later, I thought we should maybe try some of the other games I was given a loan of.

The minute the original Tomb Raider was inserted into that machine changed things forever.

We didn't have a memory card with the machine at the time, so it was back to the start of the level every time we died. And boy, did we do that a lot in the beginning. But despite the frustrations of not being able to save the game, we persevered. We marvelled at the amazing graphics, we cursed the control system (until we got the hang of it), and nearly had a messy accident when the bear jumped out at us, after entering that hut.

And them came The Lost Valley. It was the equivalent of what marathon runners call, 'The Wall'. We spent over an hour going from the top of the waterfall to the wee cavern at the other end where the wolves came out, and just couldn't find any cogs to work the mechanism. I was convinced at that point, that the game was bugged and you couldn't get any farther, until a random, frustrated jump at this bit of wall ended in finding a ledge we would never have seen in a month of Sundays otherwise. The excitement of realising there was actually more to this level was palpable. Raptors attacked us, and we looked on in awe on entering this huge, open arena.....and then came the T.Rex. I had never experienced anything like this is a video game before. Ever.

We played on for another few hours, getting to the end of the Tomb of Qualopec before finally switching the thing off at 6 o'clock in the morning. I went over to the local shop for a paper about an hour later, and literally stopped at the kerb and jumped on it, my mind was so frazzled by the game. :D

It was not long after that I got a PS1 of my own, and of course, this game (and a memory card!) was my first purchase.

Even though this was now over twelve years ago, I can still remember that night as if it were yesterday.

Great stuff.

Amazing stuff. :D Your description of all the exciting of finding out ledges and different paths... it's exactly how I used to feel about TR...

Wow, it took you to another world. And you just did the same for us.

Sounds like no memory card really ups the old suspense factor!

Yeah, the thing is, if I played any of the games without being able to save now, I reckon I'd get bored fairly quickly, but back then, the sheer amazement of playing something that I'd never seen anything like before kept me going.

Exactly :tmb:

And there were and still are only a few, which can affect a person that much.

That was an amazing read. It reminds me (and the rest of us) why do I love Tomb Raider. It just has that undescribable feeling...

These threads are the reason we are the best forums in the world. :)

I have the best memories of playing the original Tomb Raider with my nan and grandad, they used to sit in their big chairs, my nan with the official walkthrough on her lap, my grandad playing the game, it was great fun!!

Then when they got bored of it i was given the playstation just in time for Tomb Raider 2 to be released so i naturally was bought a copy of that aswell! :D

For years i thought I was the only one having that nostalgic memories for TR games. And then I realized when I got net - I`m not alone. Saw first on youtube and now here people write of this game and it`s atmosphere...

No other game have atmosphere like this, don`t know why.. especially TR 1 & 2

Thank you Core Design, Nathan Mcree, I wish everyone have memories of TR like me

That's quite a good story! For me, it was kind of different... I walked into a friends room (I was in the Army), and he was stuck in the flame pillar room in Midas palace. I didn't know much about the game but as I saw him keep trying to get over it, I started trying to reason through how it could be done. He eventually gave up, and I asked if he minded if I try. After maybe an hour or so of bumbling around, I got to the lead bar, and the rest is history!!

Made me laugh, really good read!!
Tomb Raider is by far the best game I ever played. I remeber I was six, when I played the first one and I remember just loving it, as frustrating as it was to play jaja
