its a bit... strange

where was this again?

Mytly

In the FMV where Lara breaks into Natla's office. It is said (or rather written) by the monk whose diary Lara reads.

I thought that was supposed to be her fathers diary?

Or was that only brought into Ani?

Mytly
31-08-09, 19:30
That was in Anni. In TR1, Lara reads the diary of a monk who used to live in St. Francis Folly. He is talking about being tempted by the Scion bit that is hidden beneath the Folly.

Just another sample of craping over original good story. If it's not broken... cough

i loved the fact it was her father's diary :o

I hated it. I much rather Lara finding out everything for herself. It made the original story much more complete - we were just as ignorant as she was. That and the fact that I hate that Lara is now who she is because of her father - rather than herself but that's not for here.

Sweaty toes. Yum.

Or was that only brought into Ani?Lara did read something from her father's diary in Anni, but it didn't replace the book in Natla's office. Instead of reading the monk's book she gets information from video messages from Larson and Pierre.

Lara never found out everything for herself, whether the inspiration came from a monks diary, her fathers journal of some unknown explorer's journal there was still information coming from another source. Not to mention it was Natla who told her where Vicabamba was in both TR1 and TRA. It makes much more sense making it a family obsession, than just having Lara do it for greed.

And the toes comment made about as much sense as Tihocan mentioning Natla's feet as he sentenced her. Most of the dialogue in TR1 was the same standard, so no I missed none of it.

Always bothered me too. I'd sure like to hear some stories from TRF members of moments when their toes were sweating :D

The line is hilarious - it is meant to depict those cloistered monks from long ago who got up to all manner of nutty things in the name of being chaste and pious, etc. He says, "my toes sweat at such possibilities" and then goes on about beating himself to get rid of the fantasies of power that the relic could bring. He's a complete nut! Trying to be good when really he has all these "urges" he's trying to suppress.

I love the text from TR1, I find it quite subtle and witty.

stereopathic
24-09-09, 21:54
the line is terribly cringe-worthy, as are many lines from the first game. but i guess the monk was trying to illustrate with ...erm... flourishes of language that he felt so much nearer to the fiery pits of hell beneath the earth.

:vlol: :vlol:

I could only understand the first few words and the last part 'but it is indeed a test'. That's just gross. :D
TR-1 is full of epic lines, especially the conversation between Lara and Natla. Love it love it love it.

In TRA She was reading from her fathers diary (at least they were his words) in Peru, not on the way to Greece. Before Greece she watched the videos of Larson & Pierre.

Agree.

For anyone confused about TR1/A's differences...

TR1

Lara uses a welding gun to fry the wires that hold the lift to the counterweight so she can use the counterweight to fly up the lift shaft. Near the top she lets go of the cable and the momentum carries her to the roof. Next the camera pans across Natla's ruined office to lara who is sitting in a chair with her feet on the desk infront of her. She is reading through an old diary type thing written by a monk a few hundered years before...

LARA : (Reading, not aloud) Relocated now to St Francis' Folly, new temptations torment me...

Lara's voice blends into that of the monk who wrote the diary.

MONK : ...for rumor amongst my fellow brothers is that entombed beneath our monastary is the body of tihocan. One of the three legendary rulers of the lost continent Atlantis. And that with him lies his piece of the Atlantian Scion, a pendant devided and shared between the three rulers...

Camera shows you that on the page is a drawing of the complete scion. Lara holds up her piece to the image and finds theyre identical.

MONK : ...my toes sweat at such possibilities, lying so close to my mortal self...

Cuts to Lara standing at the base of the cliff which the folly is perched atop. Then to lara climbing up to the top and swinging herself up.

MONK : ...each night. I beat myself rid of these fanticies, but it is indeed a test.

LARA : (Runs up to can of baked beans) Oh pierre, you litterbug.

Lara throws the can back to the ground and enters the folly doors.

TRA

Lara uses her pistols to noisly break the cable that holds the counterweight t the lift. At the top she performs afew unnessicary flips and lands on the roof. Camera focuses on a skylight. Next we see lara drop down into natla's office to see a ginormous LCD screen (A bit modern for 1996 dont you think?). She picks up the remote and selects Larson on the video log. Once again a little too modern.

(Video Log)

Camera shows lara climbing the steps to the scion room in peru.

LARSON : Looks like our girl's pulled it off.

NATLA : Ofcourse she has, now its up to you.

LARSON : Not that im complaining boss but, what makes you sure sure shes not gonna bring it back herself?

NATLA : Lara would never part with the scion, she's far too obsessed with it, just like her fathe...

Lara pauses the screen and selects Pierre.

NATLA : Ah monsieur DuPont, you have something to report?

PIERRE : Good news madame, your information was correct. I have located my piece of the scion, (Pierre gabs camera and zooms in on the folly) Voilla, it is buried under a place called...

Lara interrupts the footage and walks to the screen. Places her hand upon it and says...

LARA : St Francis Folly.

Next we see lara scalling that same cliff. Richard crofts narrates...

RICHARD CROFT : Blah blah balh (Cant remember how it started, remember im typing this from memory)...thst it is the scion itself, that in some strange way a vast library of information to rival even that of alexandria. If i could just obtain it im sure that i could finally discover what happened to my beloved amelia.

Lara reaches the top and picks up the baked beans and says slyly.

LARA : Oh pierre you litterbug.

Lara drops the can and enters the folly doors.

BTW : The diary lara reads is Richard Crofts Field Notebook. Lara's personal diary is in the inventory which contains her "Thoughts".

It isn't too modern, no.

Natla's presence in the technological world implies that technology has been introduced earlier than it might have been otherwise. And even if it isn't widely distributed, Natla Technologies itself would certain have it.

It's certainly no more modern than the laptop with wireless satellite-internet hookup with built-in high-quality web-cam that is used in TR1's opening sequence would have been.

Yeah... I remember laptops in 1996, they were primitive at best, nothing like you're describing above.
