View Full Version : Lara Croft vs. The Doppelganger (A short animated sequence)
This is a short clip I've been working on over the past few weeks during some free time, mainly to force myself to sit down and animate something for practice. It's also just for fun. The animation is in the first splining pass stage. I think, however, I'll go back a few steps and spend some more time on the breakdowns. I should note that there isn't a begining or ending to this clip because I have yet to do the breakdowns on those parts. The missing sections aren't that interesting, either way. =P

I'm a bit embrassed to say I'm rather late to the TRU party. Last year, around December, I picked up the game only to have it become part of my gaming backlog. I didn't get to play through it until late July of this year. On the bright side, I thought the game was really good, and dare I say the best in the trilogy. I went in not knowing what to expect since I didn't pay much attention to the pre-launch media and passively avoided the post launch reviews, as well as the forums. The platforming bits and puzzles were fun, and the story was interesting enough to keep me engaged. I've never been fond of this type of gunplay formula, but it was forgiveable since there wasn't a lot of it. The main cast, creatures, and levels looked great too. Yea, so, that's my mini-review. Not sure why I'm posting it here.
Some additional notes for the sake of full disclosure.
-The geometry and textures are from the game. I did not model anything nor paint any textures. Praise goes to Kam Yu and Co. from Crystal Dynamics.
-I didn't know how to parse the uv and normal data of the vertices on the geometry. I have to thank TRF member Dusan for posting the code to his/her data Unpacker, which reveals how this info is stored.
-Rigging, animating, rendering done in Maya 7.
-I took a stab at writing some mental ray shaders; I tried to go for a look similar to the game combined with a slight "filmy" look. It didn't work out too well, though. The shaders I coded are relatively simple and render pretty fast, but, as you can see, they don't do justice to either the character or environment models.
-The motion vector and z-depth shaders are by Ledin Pavel.
-The music during the dialogue is from The Dark Knight Soundtrack. Track 10 on the CD - "And I Thought My Jokes Were Bad".
-For video reference, live action footage from movies and footage shot at home was used.
--The walk was based on self footage. The lady of the house is camera shy, so I had to settle for my manly man walk as the source and tried to make it less neanderthal-like in the animation.
--The punch and reaction is from the end of the movie Constantine when Gabriel gets hit.
--The fight scene is the Tea House fight from the Matrix Reloaded. Originally, I intended to just use parts of the fight that were really symmetric. Later, I just went ahead and did the entire fight in lieu of butchering someone else's choreographic work. Note the conveniently placed shipping crates. There was still some butchering involved, though, since I tried to make the fight a little less dude-ish without straying too far from the source.
That's about it. Since there is tons of room for improvement, feedback would be welcomed. Let me know what parts look iffy or just plain bad and I'll make note of it. The dialogue leading up to the fight is making me cringe, possibly due to the over dramatic pauses and overall cheesiness. It didn't seem that cheesy on the storyboard I penciled out. I really wanted to do a lipsync sequence with some kind of interesting banter, but I could only think of that one cutscene near the end of Lara's Shadow. =P

Amazing, amazing, amazing! My jaw dropped to the floor when I saw this - its too incredible for words! I want more! You're very talented and I can't wait to see what else you have in store if that just took a few weeks.
But as a suggestion, If you're going to use another fight as a reference, you should look towards Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where she fought her enemy Faith. Their fights were epic!

I love how you managed to capture Classic Lara's attitude simply by not making her give a damn about DG.

now for some feedback:
- actually I liked the conversation at the beginning. especially doppies reaction to laraīs blow.
- the whole beginning is good because when you hear lara talk you donīt think sheīs gonna hit doppie because I know the original scene and never expected Laraīs action.
- the fight itself was nice but something doesnīt seem right. i dunno what it is that makes me feel it. maybe itīs a little to slow or the animation isnīt fully flowing ( sorry donīt know how to explain it better in english)
- what made me smile a lot was the slap doppie gives lara near the end. doppie smirking/sneering afterwards.
- i would have loved to see some things in slow-mo but the slowmo doesnīt work with the video on my players.
hope to see more from you, loved your other TR vids too.

This is truly one of the smoothest, most professional-looking animations I've seen in a long time. You could make an entire animated series with skill like this orez :tmb:
I especially liked the conversation at the start - very natural expressions and fluidity of both characters. The fight itself was, at times, a little slited, but I genuinely thought you'd used motion-capture instead of frame-by-frame!

That's perhaps the only flaw in the whole fight, it's too scripted/copied from other movies. But I did like the part where they raised up on the crates (I'm not aware if it is from matrix as well) and some of the slow motion scenes.
Add some more angles and camera movements that follow the characters movement. Zooming in and out of a jump kick, looking down/up on the characters not from the top/under but from a slightly tilted view will add some additional coolness to the fight as does very quick camera movements from side to side. But dont make it constant. The neat camera tricks are just a treat and a great tease.
Still, very good animation. Very life like!

To me it was that they didnt blink, or moved their heads like a normal person would. Thats what kind of set me off. Still loved it!

That could potentially work. The Louvre chase from AOD is one of my favourite cutscenes.

One big problem is that I don't have the skill or knowledge to write complex shaders. The same can be said for building a proper light rig for the environment and characters. In addition, to keep the render times low, I couldn't use lighting methods like global illumination or final gather.
I should mention that I initially wanted the fight to occur on the second ship level, the one in the Andaman Sea. That way, I thought, it would have followed the TRU plot line at least a little. After getting Thor's hammer, Lara's infiltrates Amanda's second ship, and then runs into the Doppelganger. Seems simple enough on paper. The only reason, however, I went with using the first ship level for the background was that I couldn't do all those insane and subtle effects that were in the game. There rain, dripping/rolling water on the walls, puddles on the deck floor, etc. Having those effects occur on the characters as they're fighting is also totally beyond my scope.

Definitely. I'm getting the same vibe too. I think the problem comes from the spacing of the motions; I need to tweak the breakdown keys further.

Those are from the movie as well. In the Tea House, both Neo and Seraph get on top of some wooden benches and tables as they're fighting.

These are really good suggestions. I may have been neglecting the use of camera work to tell a story or to just emphasize a motion. I should experiment with sort of thing. Camera movement and staging a shot seems to be an art in itself.

Yup, I'll need to add rapid or partial blinks in the fight and also fix the eyelines. As for the heads, I think perhaps they're too stiff.

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV Series is filled with female fight scenes! There are many clips and full episodes of them on hulu.com if you are able to view the site in your area. The episode called Graduation Day (Part 1) has the fight scene that I'm referring to, in case you want to use it for future reference.

To be perfectly honest this is one of the professional and smoothest looking animations made by a fan in a very long time. At times I thought you used motion capture, it seemed sooo close to the original Tea House scene. :D I agree with Micki that perhaps the whole thing was a little too scripted from other films, but nevertheless it's great that you made them work in Tomb Raider and with such fluidity. - The camera angle at 0:36 - 0:39 is quite mediocre. This is about the only thing I disliked.
- They both have guns, they should fire a shot every once in a while. ;)
- I'm digging the fighting style/fast paced fighting.
- The jump they make at 0:52 could be improved.
- 1:10 - 1:14 is my absolute favorite part.
- The feet shot at 1:15 should be removed because it doesn't make any sense to me since they are not moving that slow. :confused:
Any thing else I haven't mentioned looks amazing. :wve:

although I think the combat could be improved in some cases, it makes it seem like they are a bit weak and as light as a feather IMO, but great animation! :yik:

The only thing that's missing is Lara walking over Doppleganger and do a salto backwards. (Xena the Warrior Princess style!!)
I'd add some clouds and stuff to add atmosphere and possible add dirt on their skin, blood, etc.

Great renders! I love all the effects you've used like blurring of the backgrounds & motion blur etc. I am also soooo very envious of your animation skills! OMG that vid was so cool & a little bit funny too :D

The only thing I can possibly "complain" about is that some animations are a bit jerky like you wrote. Practise on that and I'll have nothing to add.

It was just a scene after i seen the video (which is fabolous...thankz oren) then i like that part of it. So i thought i would make a lil quickie on a wallpaper image of it to show.
