I've recently started getting back into them, and was wanting to check out some I haven't seen already. Anyone have any recomendations? I dig the John Hughes stuff mostly, but I'll try anything once.

My favourite is Empire of the Sun (1987). So underrated. It's one of the most beautiful films ever made, and Christian Bale, despite being so young at the time, gave an awe inspiring performance.

I would say Goodfellas but that was 1990. It's practically an 80s film though as a significant portion of it takes place during the 80s and 1990 is basically the 80s :whi: :p

Definitely the best one in the series. IMO they should never make the sequels to this movie and let the poor girl live:(

SpaceChild
26-09-09, 01:21
A kind of "sleeper" gem is "Valley Girl" with Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman. It had phenomenal tunes (The Plimsouls, Pat Travers, etc.) and the whole plot and theme hinged on a Hugo-esque moral decision: "Do I go with the one I love even though my peers disapprove, or sacrifice my own happiness for the sake of the group's acceptance?" Excellent flick, and a kind of epitaph for the now-deceased Sherman Oaks Galleria...

Lotsa good choices - especially from Dennis' Mom.

Body Double with Melanie Griffith.

Cat People with Nastasia Kinski.

The World According to Garp with Robin Williams.

The Hunger with Catherine DeNeuve and David Bowie.

Stir Crazy with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor

Simple Twist of Fate with Steve Martin

Twilight Zone the Movie

(Trying not to name the obvious ones that have been mentioned already)

Gremlins
hehe, I should watch that one again. hilarious and I will always fall for really stupid aliens and/or really stupid killers. :tmb:

Blade Runner
Every second decent SF movie, it is adapted from P.K.Dick's novels. :)

So, some more. for starters three movies from France, very 80's :
Diva
Subway
Betty Blue / 37,2° le matin

for Comedies, you can watch John Landis movies :
Blues Brothers (1980 :D)
Into the Night
Trading Places
etc.

Alan Parker movies :
Birdy (@Encore, you may like that one. Not a Spielberg, so not that much hollywoodesque, but ...)
The Wall (even though the Pink Floyd music may be the worst they ever did, if it weren't for the B-side of Atom Hart Mother)

William Hurt's breakthrough movie : Kiss of the Spider Woman

Also, I am worldwide the only known appreciator of Ishtar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishtar_(film)) :D
A comedy featuring Dustin Hoffman, Warren Beatty and Charles Grodin (I like him),
but mostly it features the worst singer-songwriter-music ever made.
When watching it, I still find it hard not to either literally ROFL or die in empathy-shame with those poor s****ers. :jmp:

-------------------------
Gabi, I have a question : Can I get banned for constantly asking stupid questions around why someone was/would be banned ?
