Brazil will become the first South American country to host the Olympics, after the city of Rio de Janeiro was chosen to stage the 2016 Games.

Rio won a majority of the 95 votes at the meeting in Copenhagen, eliminating Madrid in the final round. Tokyo and Chicago had been knocked out earlier.
Earlier, Brazil's president told IOC members "it was time time to light the Olympic flame in a tropical country".

Chicago's early exit was a surprise, with bookmakers making them favourites

I was glad Chicago didn't get it because they should concentrate on the youth violence problem plaguing that city first... but Rio? Isn't that where children are gunned down in the streets by agents of the Government?!

People need to get their priorities straight!

Well, as long as the athletes don't get gunned down, it's alright for them, I guess. Despite all the rhetoric, modern olympics have never really made the bold political statement for peace, human rights and unity that people so often claim they do, have they?

Holy ****, that's not a very good idea.

Reminds me of Tropa de Elite now. :vlol:

@Dave: policemen are getting killed there too by the drug dealers, you know, not just kids :p

I don't like it. There is a whole lot of problems that need to get fixed before trying to host Olympic Games. And then I get criticized for not feeling proud of being Brazilian. I am, once again, ashamed of my country.

Congrats to our nicest neighbour. There's still time to fight back the violence going by, and being the new host of the Olympic Games will make them take the best decitions to make it happen quick.

I certainly hope so. Well, we're still seven years away from the Olympic Games, anyway.
