That looks more like a huge sinkhole caused by a busted water main???

In any case when did the earthquake take place?

Finally someone who actually watches the news decided to post this up. Kudos Shark Blade. Atleast for some of us, this takes bigger priority then a drenched up cat.

Why did you tip him off?! You should have let him find out for himself.

I had the horrible luck to experience an earthquake for myself. It's frightening if the lights go out or if the telephone line dies, since sometimes the fear comes from the uncertainty to know if those we know and love are ok or not. That hole looks dangerous enough to compromise the surroundings, i hope it get's fixed soon. As for the other victims, let's hope the aid reaches them all.

It happened a week ago (http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/fromthefield/222031/125481923171.htm)

The hole seems frightfully deep, surely no one will survive that fall. :o

edit: It seems aquate.us only do links eventhough it's fast. Back to photobucket then.

Doesn't seem like something that typically happens during an earthquake.

My friend felt the earthquake tremors here in university

This is awful news. I only hope they're able to get aid through, the worst affected areas are among the most remote :( I read on BBC that the road leading to the affected areas was destroyed so it was difficult to bring aid quickly. Whole villages destroyed. I'm not sure what the body count is now, it was 3000 a few days ago :(

To give you guys who don't know an idea of where major earthquakes occur here's a Techtonic Plate Map of the Earth:

Actually, you can get a clearer idea from the U.S. Geological Survey (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/) website:

And i don't know if someone else mentioned it yet, but this hole is not in Sumatra (unless a new one appeared), it belongs to Guatemala City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guatemala_City#Sinkhole) and it killed 3 people in 2007.

I was just going to mention that indeed, those pictures are from a 2007 hole in Guatemala City (http://www.reuters.com/article/scienceNews/idUSN2333586020070223).

To get an idea of the Sumatra situation, I refer you to The Big Picture (http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/10/2009_sumatra_earthquakes.html).

Doesn't seem like something that typically happens during an earthquake.

Yeah lots of other things wouldve combined to cause that gaping hole.
Having watched shows like Seconds from Disaster, the common truth is they dont just occur, a chain of events causes it.

Where are the given cat weepers now I wonder...

No matter how many times this happens, its always way too hard to watch the after effects. Thankfully, logistics isn't a huge problem in this case.

How tragic, I wish I could help but what I can I really do? I have no money to donate. All I can do is hope those affected are able to rebuild their lives. I don't really watch TV save for one or two programs a week but apparantly this hasn't been reported on ITV news at all (the one my parents watch) and I'm not sure about the BBC but you can bet it didn't get top billing even if it did. Better they focus on 1 case to sympathise with than an appauling tragedy that has cost 1000s their lives a whole communities literally torn apart. Why is our media blinkered and narrow? That's why I stick with the internet and the Indy if I have to read a newspaper.
