Which sections stick out as the most suspenseful, gripping, and nerve-racking?

Off the top of my head...

Peru

- The four wolves and the Bear attack in City of Villacamba (was first time where your combat skills were tested)
- The raptors/Trex in Lost valley (OMG!!)
- Breaking tiles in Tomb of Qualopec

Greece

- Traversing your way down the huge structure in St Francis Folly (what a sense of scale that was)
- Running through thor's lightning bolts
- Getting shot at out of nowhere by Pierre when your trying to climb up the structure (WTF is going on ?)

The entire atlantis level (especially the 5 switch room where each triggered a mummy attack)

So many great moments ill think of more later...

the most tense sections IMO are the ones where your last save is MILES away, you have a mm of health left with no medipacks and the next save crystal is MILES and MILES away! :yik:

The most tense section of the game for me is the opening to Atlantis. It's all dark, all you can hear is the classic cave ambience, the lights go up, and you enter a room filled with gigantic eggs, in a room practically made of meat and flesh... it's eerily quiet... and then the eggs hatch and these horrifying mutants launch at you.

Never a dull moment in Atlantis. :D

1) Running down that winding hallway in Temple of Khamoon with the mummy waiting at the end of it. I can't think of anything worse than this one.

2) Going down the slide in Atlantis to battle the two mutants at the bottom. I did eventually find out a method to get onto a block and not have to fight them directly, but that was only recently.

3) Emerging from the long hallway in Sanctuary of the Scion to fight 2 mummies & a centaur.

4) That $&)!@&$)!:cen::cen::cen: cowboy in Natla's mines.

5) fighting the giant legless mutant for the 1st time.

6) Approaching Natla's room for the first time (didn't realize she'd be such a joke).

7) The jumps in the end of the game after beating Natla.

Ugh I know. The first jump to the next platform in Atlantis springs to mind because you've done a lot just before. Once you get the crystal it's such a relief. :) A lovely sense of accomplishment. The same with The Great Pyramid; sliding down those two thin slides where you have to accurately jump onto the platform with the save crystal at the bottom end. Love it! :D

Good points about the save crystals, even though the save system was ..frustrating... it did create a lot of the tension simply because you couldnt just play carelessly knowing you just saved.

As janky as they seem the save crystals had their merits.

After climbing a bunch and then pulling switches in Sanctuary of the Scion, waiting for the flying atlanteans to come out and knock you all the way back down.

-Waiting for mummies to come to life or eggs to pop open.

-Damocles room. (One of those sword always manages to get me!)

-A lot of the traps in Great Pyramid.

Any corridor I think there might be a boulder waiting to squish me, there is one I think in Natlas mines I will usually forget, so once I get to the lava I become paranoid at checking the likely hood of there being a nasty surprise lying in wait. If Lara could look around corners that is what she would be doing. Mind you the one that usually get me you do not suspect.

Well,in terms of tension it has to be the Atlantis and The Great Pyramid (except the overly easy final battle) levels.
In those 2 levels you had to be constantly alert for the most devious traps as well as fighting the ruthless mummies who were hiding in the most inconvenient places for combat, waiting to suddenly jump on you.
Playing the Playstation version raised the tension even more because you had to be even more careful if you didn't want to start again from the last save crystal.
But even in those last levels the game's difficulty never became "cheap".I think the developers balanced the difficulty perfectly in this game,in contrast with TRIII and TRLR (although i personally like those more than the original.)

But as the saying goes:"they don't make them like they used to anymore.":(

Completely agreed (although I like Tomb Raider 1 more than The Last Revelation :p). :tmb:

Ah yes those eggs. Those weird arm-like things move up and down and then SUDDENLY the egg breaks open. I got such a fright once. XD

None of those apply to TR1, though.

Caves - entering the hallway with the darts just after the timed door puzzle with the 3rd secret and dogs where the spooky music plays
City of Vilcabamba - Entering the axe corridor spooky music plays again
Lost Valley - Being ambushed by velociraptors and T-Rex
Tomb of Qualopec - Heading up the stairs to the scion chamber
St. Francis' Folly - Being ambushed by pierre
Tomb of Tihocan - The end of the level where you go deep in the chamber to the tomb

I dunno, you could argue that the T-Rex fight applies to TR1.

Once you know what you're doing there isn't a whole lot of tension in the T-Rex fight in TR1... Just duck into the tunnel and shoot him from that high cave. At first though... Pretty hair raising.

Yeah but not the statues. They're not times and you don't even have to touch them in TR1.

Caves- the wolf encounter with the great, tense song.
City of Vilcabamba- the bear at the beginning D:, the first time it caught me by surprise. lol. Now its nothing special :/.
Lost Valley- T-rex first time.
Tomb of Qualopec- The scion room. :/ The wolf trap room first time.
St. Francis Folly- Thor's room. With the AMAZING song. Damocles room.
Colosseum- One of the rooms where u slide down and there are tigers in cages.
Palace Midas- Fire room.
The Cistern- killing the crocs in one of the side rooms and letting my guard down when suddenly I noticed a croc is biting at me >_>.
Tomb of Tihocan- The centaur omg.
City of Khamoon- Mummies. Im scared of them. Especially the one where u push a crate in the water room and then suddenly a mummy comes out. >_>
Obelisk of Khamoon- The room where there are too mummies waiting for u below if u fall.
Sanctuary of the Scion- The gate with the mummies and centaur at the end.
Natlas mines- Cowboy the first playthrough. I panicked and fell through one of the pits lol.
Atlantis- the first room. VERY cool and spooky and tense :). I love this TR lolz. The room with the two atlanteans and the doppelganger.
The Great Pyramid- the torso boss fight. And pretty much all this level. IT was great. Filled with jumps, traps and dangerous stuffsies :). The bad part is that I encountered the glitch that didnt register the last secret :/. Oh well. I found them all in my heart lol.

Hence why I only mentioned the T-Rex. You originally said "None of those apply to TR1" ;)

I have mild aquaphobia from nearly drowning when I was 6 or 7 years old and that fear translates into the games I play! I am absolutely mortified whenever I come up on a section where I am forced to get in the water. It's especially bad when I know there are enemies in the water like crocodiles, sharks, eels, frog men, etc. I doesn't stop me from finishing the games though. I just recently was replaying TR2 and it took me five days to get through all of the Offshore Rig and Maria Doria levels and I saved about 600 times (no joke). I had to stop a few times because I felt like I would throw up. TR1 is worse though because you don't have the harpoon gun to defend yourself.

Also I'd just like to point out now that I feel like such a wuss that I can swim and do it often. My biggest fear is large open waters like lakes or Oceans, although I've overcome that in recent years by swimming in both the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean. I'm not a great swimmer but I'm adequate, to me if I get in the water and come out alive it's a success. :p

The best way to overcome fears is to take it one step at a time; start swimming with a group of friends, first go to a pool, work your way up to a stream/creek and then slowly move on to large areas.
When you feel comfortable in them then try the same thing alone.
I got over my fear of heights by taking it one step at a time

My parents think I have agoraphobia and I may do as I find the "caves" level very open but hard to escape from lol

= tense

:D

Every level has a memorable part:

Caves
The very first enemy of course (bats). When the bridge collapses under your feet and the wolves attack you.
And of course, when you don't make that jump (after the part with the wolves) and fall down, where a mean bear awaits! :D

City of Vilcabamba
The bear that seems to appear out of nowhere (the first time). The swinging axes, combined with the ominous music.

Lost Valley
The T-Rex of course. First thing I did when I saw it was RUN and hide in the nearest cave/pit.

Tomb of Qualopec
When the mummy awakens. Now that was scary.

St. Francis' Folly
I think this whole level was full of scariness. First encounter with the lions and apes, Pierre bugging you all the time, the incredible height of the Folly, the Damocles room with the swords, the rolling boulder in the Atlas room, the looooong swim underwater in the Neptunus room and having to trigger the hammer in the Thor room (which was nerve breaking).

Colosseum
This level wasn't very scary.

Palace Midas
I was shocked when I let Lara step on that 'rock' and she turned into gold. That was awesome, since I had just learned about Midas in school. :D
This level was pretty tense because of the length and many many enemies.

Cistern
Pierre was extremely annoying here.

Tomb of Tihocan
The centaur statues coming to life, of course. ;)

Temple of Khamoon
This level wasn't that scary to be honest, the mummified cats were pretty creepy though.

Obelisk of Khamoon
Same as above, only here the mummies jumped at you out of nowhere (around the corner).

Sanctuary of the Scion (RUNNER UP)
Very creepy level. It's dark, there are mutated freaks everywhere and those damn centaurs! :hea:
That ledge where those two flying freaks show up EVERYTIME kept making me nervous even though I knew they would show up again (or more because of that).

Atlantis (WINNER)
This is for me the creepiest level out of the game for sure. Exploding pods with mutated cats and flying creeps everywhere! Phew, I was glad when it was over. :o

The Great Pyramid
One word: Torso. :)
