View Full Version : Tomb Raider will not play on PS3 but can be downlaoded from PSN store?
I have had 2 PS3s, a Fat and later Slim versions. I have a MINT copy TR 1 game, i popped it in it shows the PS logo as it would if you were playing it on a PS1 or 2, it shows the opening video and the introduction of Lara to Natla. then it goes to the main screen, i select new game and, the screen goes blank. It plays fine on my fat PS2, so i know it is not the game disc. I read that PS3s that had the OLDER firmware could play it but later versions could not (mine is 3.01 upgraded from 2.70 from the fat and 2.80 on the slim respectively). I see on the PSN store you can download the PS1 TR games, but i am curious if you can download them to play them, why will the physical copy will not?
Not owning a PS3 this is probably not going to be much help but did you set up a virtual memory card and assign it a slot? You can only download the classic Tomb Raider games from the American PSN store, are your PS3's then American? Knowing what region your PS3's are for could help work out why TR1 is not working.
yeah, its been reported that there are some Major issues when running TR1 and TR2 on a PS3, but they've probably emulated them somehow to have an option to download it.
but if it is emulated, then why cant i play the disc i have LOL, i have NO desire to pay for the download if i have a physical disc. and yes, i did set up the internal memory card, and I live in USA, and it is USA/NTSC PS3 slim that i have now ;).
Agent "well i guess i will just have to play it on the PS2 *sigh*." Dee

Why on Earth would firmware upgrades make the emulation worse?

Ha ha, when I was a working programmer, we used to have the term, "the dreaded upgrade". "Upgrade" is a press agent phrase, meaning "this change we're making for our advantage we want you to think of as an something good for you," whether it is or not. Upgrades often lose functions, not just add new ones.
More neutrally, software requires a series of value judgments, and people are seldom unanimous about what's good.
Defies all sense of logic in the world.
Ya this was brought up long ago. After a certain firmware update from PS3, both TR I and II stopped working. Pretty infuriating, considering that the game worked before an 'up'grade as they said above lol.
I can't help but see it as a way to force us in getting the PSN downloads lol I could be wrong but it's an opportunity they (eidos or sony or whomever if ever) couldn't resist.
Too bad 'cause TR I and II's soundtrack plays CDDA, which gives us a blasftful of uncompressed sound. Playing it with prologic II output surround sound is triumphant. And now that's no longer possible. I wonder how it's like on the PSN download.
Simply put: they want you to spend the good money again. That's business, bro.
