It looks so much like a real fantasy book, because it's based on a real fantasy book, but the characters are a little different.

To all those who haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and buy the 10 dollar DVD at BestBuy.
It's alot like a violent anime, only with puppets.
Picture Link from Elf Quest in the Everquest world.

Labyrinth is very good also, but a bit predictable and slow paced.
It's really a "vedge out" movie, when there is nothing better to do.
It's also a good film to see to cuddle up with your girlfriend. ;)

Yeah, I like Labyrinth too, bit it was more of a cute kiddie movie, even if it had real people and the Dark Crystal had puppets.

It was made after a book? Who wrote it? Is it the same title? I would LOVE to read it.

No, the book it was based on (actually more than one book) was totally different.
The heros weren't elf-like creatures who didn't have a mean bone in their bodies.
They were more like African pigmies with a terrible mean streak.
Their mentors were really Native Americans they emulated.
Their was no Gypsy village, but there was a kind of "Death Row" attitude in some camps.
"Dark Crystal" was very loosly based on historic happenings.
These things were compiled into one book called "The Dark Crystal", but of course the crystal is a metaphor, and not a real crystal.
If you look at the credits, it will say "Based on the book The Dark Crystal by Frank Oz".
Yes, he's a writer too.
After he did Yoda in "Star Wars" (Episode 4), he got very interested in the history and philosophy of Native American, African (Ethiopean), Chinese, and Spanish (Aztec) cultures.
I think there was a bit Turkish in Yoda too.

If you really want to read it, get the hardcover book based on the movie.
It is printed on glossy paper with crisp sharp digital pictures, and the characters are pretty much the same.
In the soft cover version, details of how the movie was made is included because it's a condenced version.

I've seen it while I was a kid, and it really impressed me. A great movie http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif

I haven't seen it, but I've heard of it. Since I enjoyed Labyrinth (though I haven't seen that movie since it came out quite some time ago), I've been interested in checking this one out.

Thanx New-Raider. Both books sound really interesting, and I would love to read about the actual happenings just to see the similarities and metaphors in the movie.
