I do too. Certain areas anyway. I mean, how is knowing what 4x-3x = 9cxd - 3dx + 4x is going to help me become an English teacher?

When I was a teenager, I was wondering about the same thing. And now that I'm in the English university, I never use in my everyday life Maths other than to count money etc. No equations are needed. But I guess that education should be the same to everyone from when they are kids up to 17, where they may not all be sure what profession they want to follow. After all those years at school, you'll know where you're good at and where you're not, so you'll make a better decision on which university to go and what job to follow. So be patient and get the most of it.

My algebra professor gets that kind of question a lot, and admits there's no practical application for a lot of the things we learn in the class. She says what you really take away from maths classes is logic/thinking skills. When you can't hack something you have to look at your process to see what you did wrong, etc.

I envy the English education sometimes in that it seems like students begin focusing more intensely on their chosen subject earlier on than American students do.

Why on earth do you want to become an english teacher? There are lots of applications for this stuff, but unlike teaching a language, they are interesting. :D

There's your misinterpretation. I don't want to be an English Language Instructor, I want to teach English as a subject in school; like literature and things of that nature. I also have strong intentions of making sure the "gangsta" students know how to spell the simplest of words like train and not spell it "trane". That, and to be grammatically correct.

Suddenly I was asking my employees how to figure out how much of our allocation I needed to spend to have exactly five percent of what I spent left over for my administrative cost allowance. Not a comfortable place to be.

Life throws you curve balls. Never assume you "won't need" anything. It's purpose isn't going to be obvious at this time, but you don't want to be the guy on the ski trip with no swim suit just because he couldn't think of a reason to pack a swim suit. :ton:

Math is the one thing I wish I'd paid more attention to in school. I dismissed it as useless to me, and it wound up being the one thing I wish I'd learned more of.

Yeah, that's what I meant, but due to lack of proper language teachers (both foreign and native) in my school, I was not able explain it better. :D

I guess I should expand on my point of view more: There can be no doubt that for example teaching is a valuable job that is rather underrated. My point of concern, though, is that too many people still see it as fashionable or acceptable to say "I just don't get maths". Why does nobody nod and say "me too" when someone says "Me not gettings english" or something similar?

Not all fields of maths have applications to everyone, that is true. There seems to be some basic "anti-maths" sentiment in large parts of the western world, though. Considering how important technology in general and computing in particular are today, and will probably stay, I think that is a bad idea. I'd say that Gauss was more important than Goethe, or in the english case that Newton was more important than Shakespeare.

And yes, I know that this thread was just meant for having fun and not discussions like this, it's just something I wanted to say for quite a while and this was an opportunity. :D
