View Full Version : Kazaa No 1 for Spyware
Sharman Networks’ Kazaa p2p application is Spyware Public Enemy Number 1. And it’s popularity is what makes it dangerous. These conclusions were reached by Computer Associates via its research for PestPatrol product, says CNET News, going on that CA found Kazaa was top of its spyware list, “because of its widespread popularity”.
“CA gave Kazaa a high ‘clot factor,’ its measure of how much a program slows a machine by adding unnecessary registry entries and directories," the story states. "However, classifying a popular application like Kazaa as spyware is a delicate matter, and CA admits this creates difficulties in attaching labels.”
CNET has CA vp of security strategy saying, “Kazaa does something useful. I'm not going to say that it doesn't. But turn that around - you're allowing millions of strangers onto your machine. (Kazaa) is No. 1 because of the amount if copies it's got out there." CA said other p2p apps could also degrade network performance and consume storage space because they, too, “are bundled with adware or spyware”.
So.. right after UN-installing Kazaa, go HERE (http://www.lavasoftusa.com) and collect a copy of AdAware and purge your system of all those nasty bits of code Sharman Networks' spat onto your HDD while installing Kazaa.
Argh, I've been trying for ages to convince my sister that Kazaa is a horrible P2P program, but she won't listen. I just tell my mom to use my virgin laptop for security reasons.
Un-install Kazaa?!? Not happening.
I really can't believe that anyone would even entertain having this piece of trash on their system. And, if they insist, they deserve all they get.
Hi AE, hm, wasn't it you who posted in Tech Support recently with a spyware problem? http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/whistle.gif http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-2.gif
Hey Net.... No! You have no proof of that.
Oh but I do (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=11;t=001356#000000) http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-2.gif
If I said I was surprised at these news, I would lie.

I stopped using Kazaa the same day they shut down KazaaLite. The spyware problem has been around since the beginnings of Kazaa and most people used Lite...and of course, once Lite was gone so was the majority of available files gone :( Nowadays it's a pain to find anything on Kazaa.

I never use Kazaa. I use Shareaza, but just recently I discovered a problem with that. Whatever I search in order to download, it doesn't return any result  Can someone suggest a similar program? Thanks http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif
I use KaZaA version 1.4, and I have no problems with it. I get a lot of musics and videos and it's all ok.
There are many P2P programs. I use KaZaA Lite++, WinMX and eMule Plus and they work great. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
WinMX! Yes! I forgot about that! Thanks Mark http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif
Ah, Mark suggested it first. WinMX http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif
