Never liked gangster/mafia movies. I voted neither (I have actually seen both, hence why I know I don't like gangster/mafia movies).

I've seen bits and pieces of the Godfather so I'd voted for that. :D ;)

Is the film really that good? People said it was classic. I tried watching it a little but after 30 mins I was bored to tears by it.

Was watching the first Godfather, got to the nudity scene with Al Pacino and I was with my parents, and that was the end of it for me.

Never seen the other one.

Years ago I would have said Goodfellas without even thinking. Over time though I've come to appreciate Godfather (and it's first sequal) a hell of a lot more. There's just more substance to it.

Personally, I don't think the two are comparable. Yes they are both gangster movies, but it's like trying compare vintage wine to vintage whiskey. The Godfather is a deeper, richer story, dark and intense, but Goodfellas is more gritty, sharp, more kinetic. It moves faster than the Godfather I think. Whilst they both fit into the same tick boxes, they are vastly different and can be watched for different reasons.

I went with the Godfather though. I really like Goodfellas, but by the end of the Godfather there's a sense of legacy that I think Goodfellas cheats you out of.

I watched all three Godfather films through recently, and while I did enjoy them immensely, I'll still always prefer Goodfellas.

I dunno, I just found The Godfather films a bit slow at times and I had to watch it a second time to fully apreciate it, where as with Goodfellas I didn't (I watched them both in the same week). Plus the Godfather can be a bit too serious as well.

Godfather by far. It's not even close to comparing with Goodfellas. With Scarface maybe...

Saw a bit of Goodfellas, am eager to see Scarface and Godfather, gangster movies like this are awesome.

Godfather by far. It's not even close to comparing with Goodfellas. With Scarface maybe...Well, they're both considered to be the best gangster movies ever. Plus both Goodfellas and The Godfather feature the two best known "gangster actors" Robert De Niro and Al Paccino respectively. They're both about life in the Mafia. The only difference is that The Godfather portrays the upper echelons of it while Goodfellas focuses on the stuff at the bottom. The things that you only hear about in The Godfather is what's shown in Goodfellas and vice versa.

I bet the only reason you prefer The Godfather is because it's older, right? :p

You always mention Goodfellas when talking about The Godfather. :p

Nah, I genuinely think its a better film. It's slower-paced, sure, but a slow pace isn't a flaw in my book. It carries more depth and has more interesting characters and story than Goodfellas.

Goodfellas all the way :tmb: Godfather is a good movie but it's nowhere near as intense. I prefer Scorcese over Coppolla anyway.

Goodfellas, because I find the Henry Hill story one of the most fascinating in movie history. Not only that, it's just so damn cool.

They've got an identical poll on the IMDB forums that has been running for over a year now. The current score is..

Goodfellas - 211
Godfather - 221

It's really hard to choose between 2 of the best films from the last 40 years. I think I will go with Goodfellas tho because I have seen it many more times than the Godfather. De Niro and Pesci are both brilliant in it as well.

Other Scorcese films I love - Mean Streets (1973), Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), Casino (1995). Robert De Niro stars in all of them.

The only other Coppola film I really like is Apocalypse Now (1979).

Goodfellas because it's more interesting (although I do love the ending scene of the original Godfather movie)

As quoted from EMPIRE as to why The Godfather is the greatest film ever made:

"A wedding. A horse's head. A gun in a restaurant toilet. Sicily. Another wedding. A car bomb. A toll-booth. Orange peel. A baptism. A closed door."

There should have been a 'love 'em both' answer. I opted for Goodfellas as I love Joe Pesci and how demented he is...;) Plus it amuses me spotting people who later turn up in The Sopranos!

Anyone who has seen Ashanti's Foolish vid will know that it echoes the film.
