View Full Version : Killing In The Name

Lots of people in the UK are buying Killing In The Name by Rage Against The Machine to try and stop the X Factor single being the Christmas number one. There's even a special Facebook page. I bought it. I think Lara would like it.

Welcome to the forum,Tomb Braid. :)

Um, I've never heard of that song, but I will look it up. Can't say I've heard of people buying this or any other single just to prevent the XFactor winner being No.1. Personally I don't mind Joe getting the spot.

but to be fair, the ammount of folk buying that compared to the ammount that will buy Joe's single is very small....

I've just bought The Climb on Amazon. I'm not exactly 'for' the x-factor taking the xmas number 1 every year, but I'd rather see Joe at the top than RATM. Everything about them just screams "anti-xmas". :D Not saying they're crap.

It is anything but anti xmas, seeing as it's about the soldiers coming home to be with their families for the season!!!

Hey, I wonder if Killing in the Name getting to the top spot would inspire RATM to make a new album? I'm guessing not, but one can dream, right?
I also wonder what the band thinks of this, provided they've heard about it. I'm guessing they would approve, considering it is actually some form of a Rage Against the Machine.
And to think that I thought Jeff Buckley reaching Number 2 last year was neat. :D

Sounds like another act trying to cash in on X Factors $ucce$$!
No way. Firstly, RATM didn't start this themselves. Also, they've actually managed quite a bit of success on their own merit. And finally, they're a political band so they wouldn't stoop to that.

The thing is most people are buying the track even though they don't even like it or have never heard of it just to out do the X Factor. That's no way to be proud of a number one ;).

And why do people believe songs with a bit of guitar, drums and controversial lyrics are so 'AWWWSUMMM' and not so above all the 'mainstream' music. To be honest, most bands bore the pants off of me...

a) RATM don't need to be proud of a number one since they're already established as an influential band since a long time ago.

b) counter culture is important ("controversial lyrics" being the key here). If you think that it would be fine if every band in the world sounded exactly the same, and sang about the exact same things (love, sex, money and clubs) then good for you... But I think that would be disastrous. Plus, place RATM in their context; they were pioneers in the genre that today you might think is perfectly common.

Here is where you make a direct assumptions - who ever said I liked music about love, sex, money and clubs? RnB music can have as much soul as rock ;). Music is music, if it sounds good and means something to you, then it's good.

I have no idea what X Factor is

X Factor = Americal Idol in the UK. We used to have Pop Idol, but due to the contract Simon Cowell made with whatever TV channel shows American Idol in the US, the format/theme song/name are now copyrighted in America. He had to come up with X Factor as the UK equivalent (with the addition of various groups).

I know you don't care, I just thought I'd fill in the blanks.

I say go RATM. Simon Cowell and the big music people need to know that not everyone will buy the single because they've been hogging prime time television for the last 4 months.

I believe their song Guerrilla Radio covers that topic. Sometimes you may need the help of the large corporations to get your feelings heard, even if you don't agree with those said companies.

I don't like RATM's music. I think its generally too loud, brash and its mix of genres is generally everything I avoid in music. On the flipside is Joe McElderry as the other extreme. Meaningless, dull and unoriginal. If I absolutely had to choose who I'd give more credit to though, it would be RATM, at least they've got more artistic integrity and I'd rather they had no.1 with Killing in the Name rather than Cowell's 'The Climb'.

Well its hardly your traditional jolly Christmas song, but if you actually listen to the lyrics, thats not what theyre trying to pull off, is it? I mean how often do a loving couple tell eachother they hope this Christmas is their last. The fact that the male singer is slurring every word just adds to its charm. Its meant to be ironically heartwarming. Its not serious, it doesnt have some hidden political agenda, its just an all over enjoyable song. At least for those of us who arent so cynical about ever given thing on the planet. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but thats just my opinion :)

Sorry if that sounds harsh, but thats just my opinion :)I just don't like the song, largely because I don't think the guy singing it can actually sing at all.

Why are you accusing me of being cynical of everything when I've already said I don't like the song simply because of the way he speaks/sings?

I hope that RATM get no.1 SFM!!! I HATE the fact that the XFactor songs are number 1 every year, it used to almost be fun trying to guess who would win each year in the charts...until XFactor...ergh.

No offence to Joe of course, I mean I like how the winners tend to disappear for a year and work on an album now...but I would love to see someone else win!!

Am having an argument with a girl on facebook lol

Apparently I don't appreciate music and only like one type because I wanted a different song no1.

Vicky Wild Can't believe that &&&& is number 1. Wtf!

Charlotte Marie X its called real music

Vicky Wild LOL. Real music is swearing every two seconds and shouting random obscenities? Aye, aye, okay...rock on?

Charlotte Marie X u ever heard it?? at least its not computerised crap and they didnt steal it from another singer

Vicky Wild Yes I have heard it, hence knowing that it's a bunch of rubbish. I really am not bothered that Joe ISN'T number 1, I'm more bothered that society has gotten so bad that they resort to the worst song in the world to make a point.

Charlotte Marie X well each to their own
you obv dont appricate music because you like a certain type

Vicky Wild One thing I don't is "like a certain type of music" I like a range of music..from The Distillers to David Bowie, and Lady Gaga to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds..Not liking one ****ty "rock" song doesn't mean I don't appreciate decent music :)

Zack De La Rocha has an annoying whiny voice and the lyrics to all their songs (at least the one's I've heard) suck. However, the actual music they play is good.

EDIT: But I'm still glad that Joe guy didn't win though.

“I will be really disappointed if it doesn’t go to No1 after all the effort I’ve put in to this and winning the show.”

http://www.britmusicscene.com/joe-mcelderry-slams-killing-in-the-name-as-dreadful/

It's almost as if he thinks winning the X-factor means he's entitled to Christmas number 1.

I much prefer Joe's The Climb. Who gives a toss about him being from X Factor? That fact shouldn't play any role, it's about MUSIC FFS! I really can't understand why people don't want Joe McElderry to be Christmas #1 JUST because he's from X Factor; it's totally unfair.

Exactly why some people like me are glad RATM won it. The climb is cliched, uninspired and covered by a bland singer. Moreover, a lot of people give a toss about him coming from the X Factor - you can't disregard the fact he's had basically 3 months of publicity and Simon Cowell's money and influence behind him in all this. There's nothing unfair about it - every musician out there works their asses off to get into the charts - Joe is no more deserving than anyone else is.

It's a battle of singing. Joe vs RATM. Everything else means nothing. Joe was just discovered through X Factor through Simon Cowell.

Reggie

It's a battle of singing.
No its not. Its all a battle of what is the better song. Lyrics and meaning in a song count just as much as the voice singing those lyrics. That's half of what the campaign was about.

Joe vs RATM. Everything else means nothing. Joe was just discovered through X Factor through Simon Cowell.
Everything else means nothing? No outcome is caused by one single factor. There are many reasons Joe didn't get number 1 and RATM did. As for Joe being discovered by Simon Cowell - not sure how that disprooves the fact he's had 3 months worth of exposure on national TV in front of audiences numbering over 11 million each week.

The reason I haven't said much about this up until now is that there's been a lot of misinformation put about just so people on either side can't back up their own opinion. I'm just saying, there are valid reasons why people liked 'Killing in the name' more than 'The Climb'.

Love that a RAGE song from back in the day is getting this much attention. I never backed their politics or cared for Zach De La Rocha but RAGE had a unique, off beat funk that just pounded your senses. Seeing them live was the most intense live music show I have ever been apart of....

I love that a song by a band who actually write and create their own music is beating up on a cookie cutter pop act that uses the same hit formula with a talentless act who has a team of writers to create everything for them.

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/xfactor/news/a192415/x-factor-final-may-be-staged-week-earlier.htmlHow pathetic.

To be honest I think the X Factor has now peaked in terms of popularity. I don't watch the show, but I do know that this year's was the biggest yet. However, after this year's Christmas number one turned out to not be another stupid X Factor winner, I can't see things returning to how they used to next year.
