View Full Version : What is New York?

Okay - I know this question might seem dumb. Of course I know what New York is, bt ... I want to know more about New York and thus I have very specific questions. Naturally we're talking about the city New York (once plagued by ghostbusters chasing ghosts and Macaulay Culking trying to stay free from the clutches of the funniest crime-duo ever) and not the state of New York. So here goes:

1) What is the difference between Manhattan and New York? And how many small islands are there around the main land New York, please?
2) Where exactly is Central Park located in New York? North-West, South-East?
3) What kind of a building will be built upon "Ground Zero" where the Twin Towers once were, please? And what will be the name of this building, please?
4) Could anyone provide me with a very clear map or drawing or picture of the city New York and any possible near small pieces of islands (like the one holding the Statue of Liberty) that are near, please?

Now: what do I want this information? Easy. I'm writing a story (in Dutch - sorry: I might translate it later when it's totally finished) about how New York is almost entirely overwhelmed by crime and the NYPD as well as the American government are at a total loss about how to resolve this situation. Plotline is that the American government, before activating ALL of their armed forces into NY-City, depend on the worst of criminals that they have locked away in their prison of whom the government knws these people are true patriots who love their country more than anything else.

Any help about getting a better picture of New York would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

Honestly, use Google Earth to get a clear understanding of of the surrounding islands. It clarified all this up for me a lot.

Edit. Here. I hope this helps. but looks it up for yourself as well.

I'm leaving to New Jersey and New York for the third time this week. It's a really awesome place. Hopefully you get the chance to go there someday!

LOL! Good one.

A few more though - I googled and wikipedia'd it, but still I'm not entirely clear about this.

So I learnt the following:

1) New York City is divided into 5 major parts: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island. I tried to read about it, but maybe anyone could shed a light what the real differences are between these 5. For example - and I say this with the utmost respect and not in any way meaning to sound sarcastic or rasist - but isn't Queens more populated with black people than white people? Or doesn't The Bronx have a lot more poverty than Manhattan for example? Sorry if I insulted anyone - I hve been in Manhattan before but not anywhere else in New York City.

2) Where is Liberty Island in all of this? Is is close to the harbor of Manhattan?

Thanks again!
