With no treecover and little vegetation, soil erotion is a major concern in Iceland. This true-color Aqua MODIS image from October 5, 2004, shows thin streams of dust blowing south from Iceland's bare coast over the Northern Atlantic Ocean. For most of the year, Iceland is covered in snow and ice, but during its short summers, the ice and snow recedes from all but the permanent icefields. Myrdalsjokull, the island's smallest icefield, is the circular spot of white in the southernmost point. Vatnajokull, the largest icefield, is to the upper right.
