View Full Version : Welcome to My Vincennes University Nightmare!

Okay, so I just moved into my dorm today and I can't even believe how odd I feel. It's as if I've entered another world. A fantasy world. I'm ages away from my family and friends in an environment I'm not at all familiar with. When I was attempting to register earler I actually got sick from my nerves. I have never been that nervous in my entire life. I couldn't believe it. Also, the day didn't exactly go smooth. In fact, it went the opposite of smooth. I've just survived the most stressful day of my life. Seriously.

The plan was to leave at 6:00AM this morning, so we could be to the university by 9:00AM. That would put us right on schedule for the days events. Somehow, someway, none of my family managed to even wake up until after 6:00AM. The time we were supposed to leave. We didn't end up getting on the highway until around 7:30. We were sooooo running late. Then we got on the highway. It was a miserable experience. The exit we needed to get off on was closed down due to accidents caused by the horrific snowy weather. We had to take a detour. The weather was so horrible that we nearly slid off the road a few times. It was freaking crazy. It ended up taking about 4.5 hours to get there. We were running more late than we ever could have anticipated.

So, we went to do my registration. Everything seemed fine until they informed me that they never recieved my math and English skills results. I took that test months ago and the stupid place never sent it out. Luckily, the nice lady working at the registration desk managed to get hold of my scores and I didn't have to redo the stupid exam. Thank God. Then we had about an hour and a half to spare before we could continue to my scheduling.

I went to my dorm hall, got my key, and unloaded all of my things in my new room. My roommate, who was still on winter break, had his stuff scattered all over the room and pictures of naked women all over the walls. The whole situation was a nightmare. My roommate, from what I heard, was to be a sports obsessed Xbox fan. (PS3 all the way, baby!) We were polar opposites from what I could tell. Brandon and me were doomed from the start.

Then I headed over to the administration building to do some scheduling. This seemed like it should have been an easy task, but to my surprise my advisor then informed me that my existence at the university was not on the system. Somehow, I was able to do my initial registration and move into my dorm, but I was no longer in their system. So, I was taken to some other random building, where they then informed me that they had lost my high school transcripts and my application. I was then required to refill out my application. They were all running around the campus frantically trying to sort out my mess. In their owns words, my situation was the most stressful they had ever dealt with registration-wise.

So, while they were sorting out this mess, my family and I decided to go grab a bite to eat. Five hours later than we initially planned. The supposed "best Mexican restaurant in the state of Indiana" was a let down to say the least, but obviously that's the least important detail to this nightmare.

When we got back, they informed me that they still couldn't find the paperwork and I'd have to do my scheduling by hand. Ugh. So, I did so, with perhaps one of the nicest advisors I could have asked for. I don't have half the patience this guy has. Then we ran that schedule over to admissions. They told me they couldn't file it until they had a proof of my graduation date, sent from my old high school (which was now closed). Because of this we were late to get my student ID. We didn't have an official schedule, so we couldn't get my books. I couldn't access my loans in order to get my books. What a freaking mess it was. Then, at the last second, some random secretary walked in with my paperwork. Filed wrong, of course. The staff in that building were cheering. "Yay! The O'Hare mishap has been resolved." I'm famous already.

Unfortunately, the student ID building and the book store were now closed. So, I'm going to have to do all of that tomorrow. I'm not sweating it, though. Most of that stuff it sorted out. Thanks God.

Then, my family and I headed over to the nearest Walmart to grab me some dorm room snacks. Yum. I got fruit roll-ups, Mountain Dew, bottled water (of course), and some potato chips. I then brought them up to my dorm room and unpacked everything. To my surprise, there was a tiny note on the door of my room which read "Matthew O'Hare, please report to the front desk ASAP. So, I did. They then informed me that they gave me the wrong room and to move down to a different floor. I was then forced to repack all of my things. (I brought a hell of a lot.) I then brought it to my new room. This roommate seems much cooler. He's back from break already. Although, my first impression of him was porn and KY Jelly. Don't ask. I'm now mostly unpacked and looking forward to resolving all of my issues tomorrow. This was one crazy freaking day. :p

Hahaha, that pretty much describes my freshman year roommate. You're not alone.

Your registration issues sound awful. I remember Collegeboard had similar issues when submitting my AP test scores...

And so your adventure begins :p

It's hard when everyone else seems like they know what they're doing!

So you're in USA. When I'm reading this, after the form of organization I can see you're in Romania. You're organization is really messed up.
If I had to go to college right NOW, and this would've happened to me, I think I would've died of a panic attack because I panic when stuff doesn't go accordingly do my plans.

Yesh, that sounds horrible! Im glad youre settled for the moment, now atleast  Good luck getting the rest of your stuff organised - hopefully you wont have to wait in massive cues to get your ID card and such done :) Good luck and welcome to my world, lol :tmb:

Wow man, even my first day wasn't quite as hectic, but it was close. The first day is always the hardest, it'll get easier Matt. :) I had went to freshmen orientation prior to moving on campus so I already had some friends during the first few weeks. Give it a week or two and you'll wish you had come sooner :)

Well, at least you survived to live another day. Something similar happened to me at my registration. I was doing the registration with some 2nd year, and they told that that because I didn't bring one random form about finance, I wouldn't actually get registered and would have to do it again, and I wouldn't get any money. I was horrified until I went to get my ID card printout, and the lovely girl told me the other guy was talking out of his arse.

Hope it all goes much better for you though, AA! Have fun!

As a fifteen year vet of post-secondary ed, I have to marvel at how poor your experience was. In this day of computers, the idea that someone could be lost so badly is mind-boggling. Paperwork, sure, but not even a computer record? Sounds like some very bad data entry.

But look on the bright side: it's onward and upward from here! :D

My first day was almost as bad. But after I got over the thought of committing suicide (I kid), I moved on to day #2. Then #3 and so on. It does get better and easier, take my word for it. Just never let anything or anyone stop you, and if you run into what appears to be a brick wall, get out your sledge hammer and knock that son of a ***** down.

Oh God, you've got me worried now! :p Glad everything seemed to work out in the end though. I'll be starting university myself in just over a year and a half. Sounds like a long time but it's not really. Already got a university fair thing coming up in April and I expect I'll be looking round and applying to places in the summer. Scary...

Sounds like you don't settle into Uni as much as you settle into college :( It seemed to me as though I'd settle into Uni even more, considering Primary I settled in the worst and got better as I moved to secondary then college...

Yeh now I'm worried.

At least you've got most of it all sorted.

Even though yesterday went distasterously, I managed to get everything in order today. So, I thought I'd post some dorm room pics. :D

Here's my side of the room. It's a bit dark, but you can see pretty much everything. Forgive the broken blinds.

So far my roommate seems pretty cool. His name is Michael (aka Mike). I played N64 with him and his girlfriend last night. They plan on introducing me to his girlfriend's roommate in a little bit. We'll see how that goes. At least it's something for me to do. :D

yuck, how stressful! I've had similar crap happen to me. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN I DON'T EXIST IN YOUR SYSTEM????????????????????" :hea: lol. Glad you got it all worked out though. And don't worry too much about the roommate; you really just have to halfway get along with him. You don't have to be best mates or anything!

I've been playing that quite a bit over the past week. :p In fact, I remember mentioning it to my brother when he was down that I might end up taking it to uni with me because it's pretty good for multiplayer too.

Well if you want to know the difference, teachers may still act hansy pansy on you in Sixth form. Whereas at college it's more freedom ;)

But yeh, like Hayley said, follow your heart :)

Besides you sound pretty intelligent for a 13 year old anyways :)
