View Full Version : Spider-Man 4 canned, say hello to another reboot.

Well, you didn't need spider-sense to see this one coming. After a week dogged by rumours that Sam Raimi was at loggerheads with Sony over Spider-Man 4, the studio has just announced that they are shelving the Raimi-directed Spider-Man franchise, with a view to completely rebooting the character in 2012.

The reboot, which will be scripted by James Vanderbilt, will return Peter Parker to his high school/drippy teen origins, as he comes into very close contact with a radioactive spider.

Sony issued the following statement, from Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, just minutes ago:

"A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three 'Spider-Man' films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We're very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning."

Raimi also issued a statement, suggesting that the split is final and irrevocable, if amicable.

"Working on the 'Spider-Man' movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job," he said.

Clearly, all had not been well for some time on Spider-Man 4, with Raimi's determination to make the film his way - by casting John Malkovich as the chief bad guy, The Vulture - and avoid a repeat of the Spider-Man 3 disaster, clashing with Sony's desire to go in another direction. Something had to give - and tonight, it did.

At the moment, there's no real information about the reboot's director, while we presume that the search for a new young star to don Maguire's mask won't begin for a while (but already Zac Efron's name is being bandied around).

But Sony will release more news about their plans for a new Spider-Man movie in due course. In the meantime, let us know what you think: is this too early for a reboot? After all, it will have been just five years since Spider-Man 3.

Seriously? By the time the 'reboot' comes out, the original came out only ten years ago. Way too soon.

That is so lame. The Raimi trilogy is good. They should continue that. A reboot is completely unnecessary. How freaking stupid.

I just read this over at the Blu-ray Forums. I'm so ****ed off. I was quite looking forward to Spider-Man 4, and I think Sam's a terrific director. I think the studio interference surrounding the (underrated) third installment and what would've been Spidey 4 was unprofessional and harsh.

Looking on the bright side though, this means Sam will concentrate more on Evil Dead IV.

So it will be a reboot, why Lord?

Why would they repeat the story of how Peter Parker became spiderman? We have already seen that. Now if it would have been a bad movie, but it wasnt! It's a great trilogy and I'm happy I have them in my DVD collection. This just doesn't make sense!

Oh god no! They’re slaughtering the Spidey franchise if they produce a reboot, especially if it stars that idiot, Zack Effron.

I heard Black Cat was making an appearance in the 4th instalment of Riami’s Spidey Films but that they were changing her to the Vulturess (vengeful daughter of vulture) which I nearly died when I read about.

Yes bring ms Hardy into play but do NOT change her character…if they change her into some freaky vulture which has no likeness to the Felicia from the comics, I will boycott the films and moan a lot.

LOL! When has the movie industry these days ever made any sense? It just goes to further show how obviously lacking the industry has been for the past 10+ years or so with all these remakes and reboots. People will pay just to see the fancy explosions and other special effects gimmicks. The entertainment value has dropped right along with the expectations. Sad, but true! :(

You're absolutely right. It's getting ridiculous with all the sequels and reboots. Why can't we just go back to the time when they made great movies but still kept working on something new instead of milking the cow (or knew when to stop)? :(

I'm very upset. I was looking forward to a fourth film. the team of Raimi and Tobey MaGuire were working like a well-oiled machine, and the last three movies were some of the better comic book-to screen adaptations out there. It is way too soon for a reboot and there will no doubt comparisons between the new film and the Raimi originals. Also, it's not like a case of "Batman and Robin" where the last movie was so bad a reboot was the only way to go.

da tomb raider!
12-01-10, 02:00
That's surprising. I thought that the Spider-Man trilogy was incredibly successful (minus the third film's mixed critical reception). Ah, well. I'm not particularly fond of the Spider-Man films (or any other films these days), so it's just yet another rebooted series to add to the list...

That is like the previous rumors of Efron starring in the next POTC film as Jack's son. Barf.

Thank god, after the trash called Spiderman 3 I am not shocked. I wouldn't mind Zac Efron, he's not a bad actor, he just hasn't been able to show his acting ability due to getting bad roles. So this may be a good chance for him to, I look foward to more info in the future, I was disappointed at how they adapted Spidey/Peter with the last 2 films.

From what IMDB is saying about the reboot, there are two ways this could go down:

A movie version of The Spectacular Spider-Man TAS.
A Dark Knight copycat.

Either way I'm ****ed. Spider-Man 1 & 2 were awesome. 3 was anything but, and it's sad to see Sony would rather ax Rami and have a repeat of 3 before letting him try something new. Funny how 3 was Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin fault and they're in for the reboot.

You should see SuperheroHype's fans. The ones that were calling for a Reboot are horrified!

*Cries* SPIDEY! noooo!

(if you lot don't know i'm a die-had spider-man fan and collector i fell in love wth peter parker playing the character from the moment i heard the first lines of the first movie; "Who am I? You sure you want to know? The story of my life is not for the faint of heart. If somebody said it was a happy little tale... if somebody told you I was just your average ordinary guy, not a care in the world... somebody lied.")

Ceamonks890

What!! NOOOOO!!!! I want Spider-Man 4!!! They were going to have Vulture, Carnage and possibly Lizard in the movie!! I don't want to wait until 2012 for a new Spidey movie, especially a reboot that's basically the first movie all over again and has Zac Efron playing Spidey:hea:!! That's gotta be the worst idea I've ever heard for a movie, especially since the movie trilogy was doing so well.

I don't mind Zac Efron as Spidey since I don't care about Tobey, but a reboot is simply pointless and unnecessary.
They should do like James Bond, placing new actors to play the lead throughout the years, continuing the story.

^But James Bond was rebooted, bad example.:p

And omg, Zac looks hot as Spidey <3Nope, it wasn't rebooted. They originally had copyright issues to produce Casino Royale because it had appeared on tv back in the days, so they began with Dr. No in 1962.

When in 2006 they have finally acquired the rights, it seems like a perfect way to start a fresh to go back to Bond's origin since he has no origin story before. :) But his past (future) adventures really did happen, its just that we've seen it in advance before.

In a nutshell, Bond had no reboot. His character grew from the 60s to Y2K, influencing pop culture and maintaining his cool, exuberant persona that captivated the audience for years.

@Shark Blade:
Casino Royale (2006) is the twenty-first film in the British James Bond series; it was directed by Martin Campbell and the first to star Daniel Craig as MI6 agent James Bond and the first of the newly rebooted Bond timeline.

Clicky (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casino_Royale_(2006_film))

And if you read up more on Casino Royale it is regarded as the reboot to the storyline.

Shark_Blade
12-01-10, 08:18
I was refering on top of my head really. :p
If you look at the novels timeline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Bond_novels), the other stories are still there and the story is not entirely rebooted (making other stories did happen). Casino Royale is the first of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels.

The other twenty other films are like an on going timeline, so that's what I'm implying.

If we're gonna keep on going on "this is how Spidey become" too soon, people will get tired of it. The original Batman movie was 1989, and the reboot is 2005 with Batman Begins. 16 years so to speak.

For Spidey it's too much too soon. I'd rather have it continue with the timeline since it's going great, I wanna see how they mend their relationship after what happened. Their last dance ending scene was so sad for me. :(

I don't see the big deal, he was in High School Musical big whoop, it's not like his role in that film is going to affect his role in Jonny Quest or Spiderman (if he is indeed going to play him).

That's like saying Jake Gyllenhaal's role in Bubble Boy is going to affect him playing the Prince in Prince of Persia. Nobody has seen Zac in a good role yet. I mean look at Jake, he was in Bubble Boy which didn't exactly show his acting abilities but look at him now. I think people are too quick to judge actors (*cough*Megan Fox*cough*).

I am disappointed, I was looking forward to Spider-man 4, loved the 3 previous movies although their take on Peter Parker was not really what I was expecting at first, turned out OK. Spider-man three was not as good as the first 2 but hardly a failure. Zack Effron should never get the part, Peter Parker was never perfect, never a showboat model type, putting some plastic Hollywood "star" in the part will never work. Raimi was a fan himself and it showed, he did a fantastic job. I can understand the studio being worried about the Vulture, but Raimi would have made it interesting, and Toby is hardly too old to play the part yet. They are rebooting too early. :(

I mean the boy can act, it's just that his current roles weren't really good to showcase them, but he does have potential. Besides he's not even confirmed. Now if Robert Pattinson was to get the role... :hea:

Soomething I made.

See he looks good as Spider Man.

As for the rumoured storyline, that sounds stupid. Coping with high school and being a super hero at the same time. That sounds really bad. Sort of like Sky High or kid's television. The other rumoured story about it being a darker and more mature Spidey-Man, I wouldn't mind that. Look at Batman. :)

And he is hot nuff said.

This is exactly why we don't want him to be Peter Parker. Peter is not a hottie, he is the complete opposite, a hoplessley awkward and socially inept mess.

People associating PP with a "hottie" like Zac is not good.

^this.

Peter Parker was always that bespectacled nerd. Although he lost his glasses, he's still a nerd, to all intents and purposes.

This man was the only decent thing about the films, and since they killed him off..I wouldn't mind a reboot.

:tmb:

It totally goes against the character, Maguire was able to pull of the 'nerd' look perfectly, in my opinion.

Whoever suggests people like Zac Effron is only jumping on the bandwagon of 'omg he iz tha hotness!!1', like the people's choice awards for example.

I read an article that it would be a gritty, contemporary take on Spider-Man. Batman Begins was mentioned in the same breath, so I assume it will be an influence on this reboot's style.

That's horrible news. Spider-Man was never that way in the comics. Can nothing be innocent anymore?

Today, 'comic book' equals 'dark and psychological'. In movies, anyway.

That's not a reboot, its actually a loose continuation of Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980).

Here's what the creator said in his twitter (http://splashpage.mtv.com/2010/01/12/spider-man-4-reactions-thor-promises-and-eric-rohmer-rip-in-todays-twitter-report/):

@smilinstanlee Marvel knows what makes a great Spidey film. If something isn't right, they're courageous enuff to dump it and start over. That takes guts

I dont see the problem with this, there is no way to judge if the movie will be good by what we know so far.

There's rumours that J. K. Simmons will still keep the role of Jameson. I don't see anybody else who would do a better job at all.

Agreed. It's just a shame that they picked him for Harry. He auditioned for the role of Spider-Man, but if he hadn't been in the films at all, he could have tried again for the role.

Reboots are not necessarily a bad thing, you just have to get the right people behind them.

Batman, Bond and Hulk are all the better for their respective franchise reboots. Batman and Bond in particular have been incredibly successful.

Tobey was never Spider-Man to me. At a convention once Nick Brendon (Xander of Buffy fame) told us he was up for the role and he and Tobey share an agent. Agent wanted to do a deal with Tobey and pretty much shut Nick out.

Nick Brendon, perfect? No. But he fits the character better.

Efron will not be Spider-Man. No way, it's always the same when these things are announced. The press throws names around, most of the time they're just making it up.

I am excited for the new film being a fan but I really wanted to see some Black Cat and have it established that he was already Spider man!

Don't you know that as of 2008 Hollywood has only had movies about:

Romantic Comedy
Vampires
Sequels
3D features
Rogue Cops
Reboots

^ The sad truth. I only have faith in Indie films now. :(

I think this is a cheap move. The actors in the Raimi trilogy are amazing. Plus, there's so much more content they could use. A reboot is unnecessary.

Screw high school movies! Swear to god, so stupid. Why, so they can glamorize high school as Peter Parker can find ways to stand up for himself against school bullies? Hollywood doesn't know crap about high school. Though Spiderman has a lot of do with Peter and Maryjane's love story and even though he is a hero, Hollywood is always out to make the characters in a high school setting (good or bad scenario) out to be the hero and have a happy ending and in reality, its not for a lot of people. High school to a lot of people are the worst years of their lives. Sure, they tackle "bullying" and "love" but its always from a narrow, conservative perspective. The kid wearing all black is the freak, all nerds wear glasses, gays are either never there or are made fun of, jocks are assholes/stupid and all the lead girls are tan and gorgeous is Hollywood's idea of "high school".

Rebooting the series is obviously a terrible idea to me because its obvious what they're trying to do. They want to give Spiderman "The Dark Knight" treatment when Spiderman stood out with its own style and had its own success unlike the Fantastic Four which was the last comic book movie series to announce they're giving F4 "The Dark Knight" treatment. From what I gather, Anne Hathaway and John Malkovich were reported to be signed on for Spiderman 4 just recently? Two brilliant people for starters and you know they can deliver excellent performances just like all their predecessors in the Spiderman villains department. Plus, Tobey Maguire is Peter Parker, love him or hate him, he fits the part like a glove. Nothing was more annoying than different people playing Batman back in the 90's when the original Batman, Michael Keaton was the best Batman out of the three in the pre-Begins era.

But naturally, even if its dead then beat it with the money stick.
