Why was it we had Lara Croft in the Core Design games in 1996 - 2003, but when Crystal Dynamics took over they wanted to start again in Legend.

To give her a new look?

And it was a different company so naturally they wanted to change her.

I can't speak for CD but my guess is that they wanted to focus more on Lara the character, her appearance, graphical qualities and such rather than Tomb Raider the game and what it was when Core Design was in place. TR seemed much more focused on the gameplay aspects when Core was running the show.

But wouldn't Crystal like to carry on Core Disigns routes.

You'd have to ask them that directly. Like I said, I couldn't possibly know or begin to understand what their motivations were to abandon a perfectly good formula to a successful game.

Perhaps they wanted to make their own stamp on Lara.
It would have been tough to try fill Core's shoes whould it not, considering what Core had achieved.

They wanted to revamp the character, update her. They put a new origin, a new personality, so technically, she acted way different. Get it? ;)

You mean like make their own story and shall we say a new life to Lara.

Exactly. They wanted to make her more "Hollywood Action Star." That's how it always goes when you have a book to a movie sometimes, but you can't deny it appealed to the mass for a while. :)
