Personally I think Belgium's entry, like Sweden's, is generally okay as a song, but just not in line with what (I think should be) the 'spirit' of the Eurovision Song Festival songs. The Dutch commentators however seem convinced it'll find a place in the finals...

They are the countries that the contest needs (wants) to participate (pay).
The UK, France, Spain and Germany have always contributed the most money to the EBU and running of the song contest. If they were barred from a contest (which used to happen to the worst entries the year before) or weren't in the final, then they wouldn't really want to pay out to keep it running. The EBU wants to keep them paying, basically (and the contest would probably not be affordable without them).

As for Norway, the host country is automatically in the finals, it makes some sense. It doesn't happen with other contests though, like the World Cup, but I think the Host country might also have to contribute a larger amount.

Still, the predictions of last round's winners were for the most part entirely off the mark.

I keep hearing how the Contest has turned into a political game. I joked about it myself earlier, but other than hearing about it, I honestly don't see it. Yes, voting patterns exist, but it is much more easily explained by shared taste (due to culture, language etc.) and migration than it is by so many individuals apparently having so strong feelings about certain countries that they spend their time, effort and money of voting based not on what the whole Contest that they do apparently care for is about but rather on these feelings that they supposedly have; feelings that are said to be "political", even though everybody that cares even a little about politics - let alone enough to base a vote on - realizes that this has absolutely nothing to do with the Contest.

No, I don't buy it. Who here knows anyone that votes for a country's song purely and solely because they like that country? Who here does that himself?
