Ukraine's Supreme Court has annulled the second round of the presidential election - upholding opposition claims that it was fraudulent.

Presiding judge Anatoly Yarema said a new vote must be held by 26 December.

Supporters of the pro-Western candidate Viktor Yushchenko broke into cheers as the verdict was announced.

The court told the election commisssion to organise the re-run between Mr Yushchenko and the pro-Moscow Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych.

The commission had declared Mr Yanukovych the winner.

The prime minister and the outgoing President Leonid Kuchma had pressed for a completely new election.

But both sides in this conflict have said they will abide by the court's decision, which is final.

That pledge will now be put to the test, says the BBC's Jamie Coomarasamy in the capital, Kiev.

I hope this is more successful than the last attempt, & that there is no voter intimidation or fraud. Power to the people.
