Gameplay Specifics:

Co-op:

Will feature two playable characters, Lara and a Mayan warrior named Totec 1
Can be played single-player or co-op, online or locally, and a second player can jump in "on the fly" 1
In single-player mode, the player controls Lara with more powerful athletic abilities 3
In single-player mode, the levels will change a bit and have more items to allow Lara to progress on her own 5
Lara and Totec each have unique abilities and need to work together to get past obstacles 1
Lara has her grapple for getting across large gaps and can assist Totec with jumps or he can use her grapple as a tightrope 1
Totec can throw spears into walls which Lara can then climb on 1
Totec can hold his shield up as a step for Lara to jump off of 1
At the end of every level players get points based upon how many items they have each found and how many enemies they have each killed 2
Points can be used to unlock weapons and other items 2
There will be leaderboards tracking scores 4

Combat and Controls:

Controls are meant to be simple and the combat fast-paced -- combat requires aiming at enemies and shooting until they are dead, then moving on to the next enemy 1
Controls are similar to many other XBLA or PSN games with the left stick moving the character, the right stick aiming the weapons, and the trigger firing the weapons 3

Lara has her dual pistols with infinite ammo 1
Totec has infinite spears and can also pick up a gun (either a machine gun or a rifle depending upon the source) 2,3
There will be infinite landmines that players can use against enemies or environmental obstacles 2
Enemies will include undead tribesmen and giant salamanders, among others 1
There will be hordes of enemies to fight at once, and points are gained for each enemy killed 1
The game seems evenly split between combat and puzzles 2
Players will have a limited time to revive each other if one falls in combat, else that character will be respawned with much lower health 2
Each level will end with a boss fight of some sort which requires a mix of puzzle-solving and combat to win 4

Visual Style:

The camera will be isometric with fixed angles providing a semi-top-down view 1
Despite the arcade feeling of the game, the graphics are realistic and detailed 1
Vegetation reacts to the characters and sways in the wind 1
Camera angles give a sense of scale by showing off how far the platforming sequences extend 1
The camera will pan out if the characters need to split up to solve a puzzle 2
Uses the same engine as recent TR games, so expect the same level of detail including shadows and in-game physics 2
Cutscenes are hand-drawn in a comic-book style 2

Locations:

Will take place in a Central American jungle 1
Includes tombs to explore in order to break up the fast-paced combat sections 1
Tombs will contain puzzles and booby-traps that require both characters to get past 1
The Spider Tomb has nonlinear level design and a map so players can orient themselves if necessary 2
There exist optional "challenge tombs" with more difficult puzzles for players to solve in order to get bonus artifacts and points 2

Story:

Story is done in a lighthearted Hollywood style 1
Lara will team up with Totec, a Mayan tribesman, in order to fight an evil spirit named Xolotl that was released from the Mirror of Smoke and can control other spirits 2

My full list of expectatitons xD
1: Alot of levels, not so short, but not too long
2: Lara's combat more developed: Hiting with fists, legs and some karate moves LoL
3: More ways for swimming, i'd really like to see some
4: Developed acrobats, I liked underworld flips ;)
5: Some of Lara's old friends and enemies, to bring back good old days :D
6: Greece, Egypt and Rome levels, we could use some culture xD
7: Wrong and right ways. Ex: you have about 5 old pyramids, and one of them hides a key wich open the door you need to finish the level. Do I have to metion the pyramids will be long, hard and complicated with mumies and other undead creatures
8:Harder puzzles, I expect about 5 puzzles in each level wich will be super-hard ex: if you don't take the key at the beggining of the level, you cannot finish the level, cuz you need that key to solve the puzzle.

Right now i'm tired, so i'll edit and write more tomorrow :P

Crystal Dynamics said this is a "One-off" game that isn't a REAL Tomb Raider game and will be very different?

Anyone else thought of the fact that Crystal are releasing this game like a beta to TR9 to see how the reaction and reviews are? So they can learn from their mistakes from this game and fix them in TR9 to make an EPIC game (Yea, really EPIC this time) :p.

Plus, I think this gives Crystal the chance to change about a lot of things without worrying that people will complain saying the good old usual "This ain't Tomb Raider" speech :p So hopefully they can make this game AMAZING :jmp:

1. No one knows for sure yet.

2. I'm guessing its either to help explain and start the story for TR9, tie up some loose ends, or maybe just to please the fans while they wait for TR9 :)

Digital downloads will become more prevelant IMO. The expense that it cuts down from packaging, etc makes the profit margin better and with the amount that it costs to make Hd games, any savings is welcome.

I think this will not only be a small tester for the origin young lara story, but also for the gameplay, and then we will get origins and see how lara develops into a tomb raider, and then the future will come with TR10:)

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if this game was a lot more action oriented than any other "Lara Croft" title. It's obvious they're not going to make Lara raid tombs in this game or at least she won't do that "exlusively". She'll be doing something else (no bad jokes intended). :)

Since this is not a Tomb Raider game, I doubt it will even resemble TR9 in any way. They said it will be different so I have a feeling we're all going to be surprised when it is unveiled. I'm happy that something different is being offered. It will be nice to be surprised by this franchise again. People will probably freak out when the details emerge. They're probably just trying something new for fun and to shake things up a bit even if it has nothing to do with the next game. Works for me as long as it's fun.

I was the exact same!

Now, its uber easy.

The way it works is you create your account, and then you search for who you want to "follow". When you follow someone, you will be able to see their tweets.

Like for example. Say on twitter your name WD, I am scremanie. If you were to follow me, when I tweeted, my tweets would show up on your homepage.

WD's homepage:

scremanie- I LIKE CHEESE 5 minutes ago from snaptu

scremanie- I just seen a bus with a heap load of dirt on the sides 10 minutes ago from snaptu

scremanie- This game I am playing makes me cream 30 minutes ago from snaptu

Something like that :)

You can follow as many people as you wish, and as they all tweet, their updates will be posted on your homepage.

And if I were to follow you, whenever you tweeted, your tweets would show up on my homepage. Currently I am following Hayley Williams and CD, and a few others. Here is what my homepage looks like;

Not as far as I know, TR9 is the big reboot for the franchise, this not being a Tomb Raider game could be anything with any one set at any time. We know it has Lara in it, and it is not like anything we have played before.

Yeah but it fits POP2008 , but it doesn't fit Tomb Raider at all , actually it's the total opposite of how graphics in Tomb Raider should be imo.

to be honest as much as her model has changed, it reeally hasn't at the same time:)

I think it's the gear, hairstyle, and general outfit structure which keeps her looking like lara croft throughout the series.

However I really like change:)

Digital download, this means off of PSN (playstation network/ store) or XBL (xbox live store) or some other place for PC users.

it shouldn't cost money to download, you should just be paying the price of the game.:)

so for PSN and XBL you can get points cards that are worth money to pay for these, if you don't want to use a credit card or something:)

I really like the art style of the environments in PoP 2008, but I don't like how the characters were done. I feel like they went overboard with black outlines emphasizing that the characters were cel-shaded, meanwhile the environment didn't really look cel-shaded at all (more like a painting than cel-shading). I guess what I'm saying is that I don't mind if they focus upon creating atmosphere through a particular artistic style rather than aiming for hyper-realism. They just have to be consistent about it, make sure that the environment is all done in the same style and that the characters fit in with the environment artistically. That goes both ways, too -- TRU had very good realistic-looking environments, but Lara kind of stood out because they tried to keep the stylized cartoony look to an extent. She looked good from some angles, but from other angles she seemed out of place against the realistic background.

The black outlines are supposed to "flatten" the 3d model. It is a nice illusion but you are right, that PoP has them WAYY too think. Games like Sly Cooper had think lines because it was cartoony and it made more sense.

As for graphics I really think that a nice comic book style wouldn't hurt. I mean if it is a download only game then that type of graphics engine would help even more for saving space for actual gameplay instead of graphics.

Anyway, my personal reaction to the news -- it reminds me of Project Eden :D I've always said that if they did multiplayer then I wanted it to be like Project Eden where there are multiple characters with unique abilities and they have to work together to solve puzzles. So far it sounds like that's what Guardian of Light is about, so I'm quite happy about that :D My only concern is that the camera view gave me horrible flashbacks of Defiance XD So I'm really hoping the PC controls work well without requiring a gamepad. The view kind of reminds me of Diablo or another RPG, so I think I'd even be okay with a similar point-and-click type control scheme for the PC version as long as it worked well (just not sure how platforming would work with mouse only :p). But yeah, this control idea is all just speculation on my part. The Gamespot article said they didn't get to play the game themselves so there weren't too many comments on the controls (only what I put about combat controls being simple).

So far, the whole game sounds a bit... bizarre, to say the least. Whilst I'm not exactly up-to-date with modern gaming, I can't remember any gaming series having a stop-gap spin-off that has many hallmarks of a game with low production values as opposed to a new installment of a high-quality video games series. Furthermore, I know it's a spin-off and all, but I think it may have spun-off a bit too much. I'm sure I don't have to point out all of the changes that are being introduced, and all in all it looks like a dire attempt to cash-in on the Tomb Raider name when it's anything but, whilst the developers and publishers work on the real next installment. Of course, it's too early to say anything for sure right now, but this is what I'm thinking of it so far.

They are convicts. Presumably they have no moral objections to attacking her. Also, depending how you play the game, she could be helped by the monks in TR2, the soldiers in TR3 South Pacific, or the mutants in TR3 London as well.

Οk, then. When I saw the creation of a sub-forum and with so many threads, I thought that maybe it was known for days. This place sure has a lot of traffic. :)

I don't know what to think yet. A new game with Lara, is always exciting news, but I didn't see that coming. Not by a long shot. The design of the levels looks interesting, but the quality of the screens is not that great.

Is the "guardian of the light" an existing videogame and they incorporated Lara?

Hey, just some food for thought:

We have heard that this game will be released this summer. There is this event on XBOX Live which is called the Summer of Arcade. Five really good arcade games were released during that event (in five weeks) last year and I bet it will be repeated this year. The catch with these games last year was that they were either temporarily or permanently exclusive. Now, what if LCGOL will be a part of it?

Just something I was thinking about and would like to share with you guys for speculation. (I vm'ed Keir about it on Eidos Forums but he can't say anything about platforms yet! :(;))

Actually, in Nevada they were. you couldn't open door unless they were able to kill a guard so you could swipe a keycard from them :)

Getting help in tomb raider is NOTHING new, I dont know why people complain about it so much :rolleyes: sure, for the most part, lara does everything by herself, but that doesn't mean she gets no help at all :)

the fact that you team up with a mayan warrior is awsome and would actually work in one of the main games.
there are things i dont like when i look at the screenshots but I will get over it.
this totally great for a side game, but again, if I see any of this in tr 9 then I´ll kiss tomb raider goodbye.

Indeed, from the sounds of it you need him to help you platform around and he needs Lara. So I am guessing if one dies, then it's game over or maybe you have a certain amount of lives.:p

I've went back and read everything about this game and I'm actually finding it pretty intriguing. It's definately new and original! And the visuals coupled with the "80's" style gameplay seems pretty awesome! Especially when you can play the game with your best tomb raiding friends. :) Overall....I was EXTREMELY iffy about this, but now I've it some thought and I actually really love it! Just don't want TR9 to go in this sort of direction at all though! Please, Crystal Dynamics! Do NOT do that! I prefer to be alone while I'm on a REAL TR adventure! ;) But I have faith in you CD! This is pretty awesome stuff! :D

It's NOT a "tomb raider game." ;) It's just a nice little game CD whooped up for us to play. It's cliche and old school...I think it's kind of cool. But TR9 should in NO WAY be like this. :pi:

I'm far too cynical to warm to it just through the info that's been released. As things stand, I'd go so far as to say I won't buy it cold either (regardless of cost), I'd want to at least play a demo of it first.

No..GoL has nothing common with Tomb Raider series. Tomb Raider 9 will be classic Tomb Raider where Lara is alone.....I expect.

^probably to exagerate tomb raider itself compared to lara croft, to change the focus. I mean they could make a game just like tomb raider where you make your own avatar. However I like lara for her role in the story and for what she contributes to the story.:)

You can only evolve/change the TR brand so far before its a different game, pleasing nobody. 2 franchises for the price of one. They will probably still have Lara in Tomb Raider, just that hopefully people will understand that the genre/formula is just as important.

I know! I'm so thrilled and excited to see they're expanding on the Mayan myths, legends and setting in this upcoming game as well. I remember jumping for joy when I heard the early rumours about Underworld being based on the Mayan calendar, only to discover it was only a small part of the game, not the main focus. :mad: They had so much more potential with the Mayan part of Underworld.
I wonder how this game will relate to the rest of the series? Is this one of Lara's first adventures or has she gone back to the Mayan ruins in Mexico to finish the job after Underworld? :cln:

I'm betting this game will be completely independent and won't relate to the other games story-wise. Obviously Lara still has her classic outfit, dual pistols, etc. but aside from visual and gameplay elements I don't think this game is meant to tie-in with any of the others :)
