Here's what I found in my inbox today (I have outlined the pointers of a social engineering attack with numbers according to the key at the bottom; this page has not otherwise been edited):

FROM:MR.MAGAR OKON
BRANCH ACCOUNTANT
UNION BANK OF NIGERIA PLC
Phone:anonymous
Fax:anonymous
E-MAIL:magarokon33ubn@hotmail.com OR
magarokon991@netzero.com(1)

Dear Sir,

First, I must solicit your confidence in this transaction, this isby
virtue
if its nature as being utterly CONFIDENTIAL and TOP SECRET(2).Though I
know
that a transaction of this magnitude will make any one apprehensive and
worried, but I am assuring you that all will be wellat(3) the end of the
day.
We have decided to contact you due to the urgency ofthis
transaction,as we
have been reliably informed of your discreteness andability(3) in
transactions
of this nature.

Let me start by first introducing myself properly to you. I am MR.MAGAR
OKON
a Branch Accountant with the Union Bank of Nigeria Plc. Lagos.I(3) came
to
know of (3) you in my private search for a reliable and Reputable person
to
handle this confidential transaction, which involves the transfer of a
huge(2)
sum of money to a foreign account requiring maximum confidence.

THE PROPOSITION:

A foreigner, Late Engineer Johnson Creek, an Oil erchant/Contractorwith(3)
the
Federal Government of Nigeria, until his death five years ago in a
ghastly(2)
air (3) crash, banked with us here at Union Bank Plc.Lagos, and had
aclosing(3)
balance of US$13.5M (Thirteen Million, Five Hundred Thousand United
States
Dollars)which the bank now unquestionably expectsit(3) to be claimed by
anyavailable foreign next-of-kin of the Late beneficiary or
alternatively
bedonated to a discredited
trust fund for arms and ammunition at a militarywar(3) college here in
Nigeria.

Fervent valuable efforts are being made by the Union Bank to get in
touch
with any of the Creek family or relatives butprovedto avail.It[b](3) is
because
of the perceived possibility of not being able to locate any of
[b]LateEngr.(3)
Johnson Creek’s next-of-kin (he had no known wife and(should say "or") children) thatthe(3)
management under the influence of our chairman and member of the board
of
directors, (3) retired Major General Kalu Uke Kalu, that an arrangement be
made
forthe(3) funds to be declared “UNCLAIMABLE” and subsequently be donated
to the
TrustFund for Arms and Ammunition to further enhance the course of
war
inAfrica(3) and the world in general.(5)

In order to avert this negative development,so of my trusted colleagues
and
I now seek your permission to have you stand as a next-of-kin to Late
Engr.
Johnson (3) Creek so that the funds US$13.5M would be released and paid
into
your bank account as the beneficiary next-of-kin.

All documents and proves to enable you get this fund will be carefully
worked out and more so we are assuring you of a 100%risk(3) free
involvement.
Your share stays while the rest would be for my colleagues and myself
Investment purposes in your country. We have agreed that, the funds
will be
shared thus, after it has been transferred into your account.(3)1.30% of
the
money will go to you for acting as the beneficiary of the funds. 2.10%
will
be set aside for reimbursement to both parties for any incidental
expenses
that may be incurred in the course of the transfer. 3.60% will be for
us.

If this proposal is OK(2) by you and you do not wish to take undue
advantage of
the trust, we hope to bestow on you and your company, then kindly get to
me
immediately via my private Email or fax:234-1-4400488 for security
reason.

Furnishing me with your most confidential telephone, fax number and
exclusive
bank particulars so that I can use thisinformation to apply for the
release and subsequent transfer of the funds in your
favour.(4)

Thank you in advance for your anticipated co-operation.

Yours faithfully,
MR.MAGAR OKON
Branch Accountant,
UNION BANK NIG(6). PLC.)

(1) Do you really think that a bank accountant would have two free web-based email addresses, and give them to reply to? I think not.
(2) Incorrect/informal language
(3) Typos which would not occur in an official document after proofreading and editing by a secretary
(4) The actual attack: asking for private and confidential details (phone number, fax number, banking details)
(5) A persuasive part
(6) This would be "Union Bank of Nigeria PLC" as it is at the top, not something different.

Hah! They socially engineered the wrong person, and rather unskilfully at that! Long words don't make you any better, it's the small things like typos and spelling that count! Don't ever believe something like this!

Geck-o-Lizard,

http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

It's not just you, I've heard of similar c**p, before. While this is apparently clumsy, I suspect it's meant to look that way! What they're doing is looking for a) someone who is less than honest, b) believes they are sharper than the originator of the message, c) is willing to accept that Nigeria is so corrupt and inefficient that the story is believable.

Where I've heard this before the whole idea is to eventually persuade/manuevre the victim into coming to Nigeria with a considerable amount of hard currency. Only to find their visa is out of order etc:-.

My only response would have been to delete the message and ignore it.

;)

I just usually delete them; but would appreciate it if anyone could tell me how to block them.
I would like to reply and give them a mouthfull like conor!! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/mischievous.gif http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/mischievous.gif

I cannot think how my e-mail address has fallen into thier hands

follow instructions

About filtering out junk e-mail
In much the same way that retailers and businesses use mailing lists of postal addresses to send potential clients catalogs and other information, others use e-mail messages as a direct marketing tool. If you do not want to receive these messages, Microsoft Outlook can automatically move them from your Inbox to your Deleted Items folder or to any other folder you specify. Outlook creates a folder called Junk Mail, where you can move junk e-mail and then review it before deleting. Or, you can have junk e-mail delivered to your Inbox, but color coded so you can easily identify it. The list of terms that Outlook uses to filter suspected junk e-mail messages can be found in a file named Filters.txt.

You can also filter messages based on the e-mail addresses of junk and adult content senders, allowing you to move or delete all future messages from a particular sender. You can review the Junk Senders list and add and remove e-mail addresses from it.

Add someone to the Junk Senders list
In Inbox, click a message from the sender whose messages you want to automatically delete.
On the Actions menu, point to Junk E-mail, and then click Add to Junk Senders list.

I got one this week titled Investment with the same speel. Just delete and forget, never answer even to say no or they'll know there's a real person at the other end and sell your email addy to some other spammers.

Social Engineering is like if I called your ISP and said:

"Hi, I'm "Your Name" and I've forgotten my passsword. Could you tell me what it is, pleeeese? I know I should have written it down, and I know it's against the rules, but I just have to see that new Britney picture!!! I won't tell anybody you gave it out, I promise."

There's a lot of forms of social engineering; read "The Art of Deception" by Kevin Mitnick and you'll get a good idea of all of them. A lot more than just the obvious ones like you've described there.

No offence, Geck-o-Lizard, but someone who would post the hyperbole that you did about having been spammed being a Social Engineering attack directed specifically and personally toward them, and then go as far as to even respond to spam is the one who needs to spend a little booktime.

That kind of thing is mass-mailed and the worst thing you can do in regard to spam is to respond, like you did.

I was social engineering people when you were poopin yellow.

Geck-o, your comments about the details were spot-on, and a good example of how you can spot a scam with some uncommon sense.

This is an example of the "Great Nigerian Scam," which is the biggest money-making e-mail scam in history, according to John Dvorak of PC Magazine!

Great Nigerian Scam (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1020614,00.asp)

A good scam to be alerted to if ever there was one.

I'm glad someone else has heard of this scam! My source refered to some russians, who thought they were smarter than the scammers, who ended up in Nigeria - and bitterly regreted it!

There is in fact NO POINT AT ALL in posting to this forum if only to insult people. The use of this forum is a free privilege which if you abuse, you will lose.

I believe it was self-explanitory, gonga, but if I have to spell it out for you...

then that's too bad.

"There is in fact NO POINT AT ALL in posting to this forum if only to insult people. The use of this forum is a free privilege which if you abuse, you will lose."

There's not point in yelling "FIRE" in a theater, or posting blantant misinformation like the thread started out as either.

And I don't see 'Admin" by your name, but go ahead and report my post if you think I need to be banned, gonga.

I simply asked you to explain your comment further. I, for one, will be happy to explain myself further. Perhaps it is unwise to admit to unethical behavior in a public forum as though it's something to be proud of, particularly while flaming a popular member. IMO, it's even worse than your "worst thing you can do." It appears to me, and I should guess most everybody else, that you can't spell it out for us without getting yourself in deeper...which is why you shouldn't have brought it up - particularly the way you did. Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black!

My statement that you quoted was addressed to Druid, not you. Who are you accusing of yelling "fire?" It is not at all clear to me.

"Blatant" misinformation is that which is intentional. "Blatant" denotes failure to conceal an unethical act. Geck-o did not intentionally post any mis-information. His intent over the past few weeks has been to carry on a dialog about Internet risks to average users. Perhaps you didn't know that.

"Blatant" effectively describes your post's admission.

I'm a bit puzzled how this thread got here - and how to start.

In the latest issue of 'Private Eye' - a British satirical magazine, is a cartoon. A guy is sat in front of a computer looking at a screen. The overall heading is 'Chat Rooms'. The choices facing him are:-

a) 'Children swearing at each other',

b) 'Teenagers swearing at each other' and

c) 'Adults swearing at each other'.

I found this forum late in June when I was looking for early reviews and opinions on AOD. I visited many sites/forums. The reason I choose to join this one was that it was absolutely clear that at this forum people were making an effort to be polite to each other, even when they profoundly disagreed. Furthermore, it was also clear that people were being supportive of other members. I found both of these features positive and so joined this forum. It is the only forum of which I am a member.

Some people seem to confuse the idea of 'free speech' with saying whatever you like. Roundly abusing other people is not 'free speech', it is simply abuse. Free speech is about the ability to express opinions, on whatever subject, in a rational and coherent manner. Slander/libel and behaviour (posts) likely to cause a breach of the peace (ie: offend people) are still offences against common decency.

Everything I've ever read about spam mail says the same thing: Don't open it. The one Geck refers to appeared on another forum and it was clear that the person posting had mis read it. Was in the same state I was a few weeks back with my hoax virus email ( http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/redface.gif ). If you open email you're alerting the sender that they have proll scored a 'hit' on a valid address. If you then respond the sender has you hooked.

Ignore them. Might make you feel better to vent your anger in response but, really, achieves nothing as it is mainly electronically dealt with. You only end up with more junk.

And I like the thought of sending an imaginary 'hug' down the line. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/grouphug.gif

This is a community. You are continually making statements to the effect that you don't like us. What constructive purpose does this serve?
