In answer to the opening question, yes, it does. For example, when I see danjodan's avatar I immediately think of a dweeb trying to be an internet tough guy.

When I find someone with an avatar that happens to be something that I'm interested in, I feel that perhaps that person and I have a few things in common. For the most part it doesn't influence me too much, but it's kind of cool to be able to talk with people who share your interests.

No, it doesn't. I like some avatars (like Mad Tony's!), and I don't like other avatars, but either way, it really isn't going to affect my opinion on the actual member. I might think something about a member based on their avatar, mind (for instance, seeing danjodan's avatar reminds me of the words "Junior Member"!), but I certainly won't judge them with it. That's just silly if you ask me.

the worst problem is that when there is a girl in the avatar I always assume that the member is a girl and vice versa. I have fallen victim to that assumption! :vlol: i've also assumed it too. Um, other than that im not really effected, aside from if their avatar has sort of an emotionless expression (if its a person that is) or they have their arms crossed or on their hips I kind of assume that they might be really rude or sassy, haha.

Legends
09-05-10, 23:51
The avatar might reflect the person, but I judge people by what they say, not by which avatar they choose. However, if I notice a pattern in someone's avatars, I recognize it and I get a certain perception, but it doesn't reflect how I view them, or what I think of them. :wve:

I always liked your avatar. :) I just like it because it's beautiful, original, and you never change it. :tmb:

As far as the OP's question goes: I might get a certain vibe about a member by their choice(s) of avatar(s) but that doesn't necessarily influence my opinion of them. What they reveal through their posts has a much greater impact in that regard.

When I think of people on the forums, it's usually in terms of their current avatar, but I don't judge them on that. Their avatars are just a signifier of them as individuals and, maybe, something of their personalities or their favourite music or films, but I find little to judge them personally there other than their choices of favourite music, films, celebrities and so on.

Pretty much all the time. Without having had a decent correspondnence with any given person, the avatar and username are the only things you have to go by.

Even though I have fallen victim to the same misconception quite often by other people here (:p), I often associate girls in avatars with female members. I don't think there's anything irrregular about that. It makes sense. We always judge by appearance in real life, anyway.

You might be the best example for me personally about the power of avatars as signifiers; when you had your previous one (Hayley from Paramore right? :p) I had a kind of immediate assumption that you were white and female, because your avatar was my only frame of reference as to your image. When I found out you were male and African-American, it threw me a little bit. :o It made me wonder how people might view me based on my avatar, if at all.

On here I generally will remember an avatar that is iconic over one that is current; for example I will always think of Catapharact as Pepé Le Pew. :D

It's a good thing. :D In any case, I like avatars that stand out from the crowds. Usually when someone has one, it just makes me feel like they're a little more creative and imaginative than the others; even if they didn't exactly create the pic, just choosing it is enough.

Like a few members have stated, if the avatar is of a male or female I tend to think of them as that gender unless there's something that signifies they're not (their name or they've got their gender in their profile to the left).

Additionally, if I like (or can quickly associate) someone's avatar it may have an effect on me remembering who they are far quicker than if they don't have an avatar or if their avatar disinterests me.

I know suli is Kate Bush, danjodan is Brent Corrigan, Ward Dragon is those two people who I have no idea who they are but she used the picture in another thread because the GOL Key Artwork picture of Lara reminded her of the woman in her avatar, Carbonek's is Beast, ]{eith's is Shakira, Emerald Field's is Cher, Reggie's is Reggae Reggie Sauce, Lemmie's is Lara from TR3 in India, Justin's in Darth Penguin, Lee Croft is Lee/Britney sucking a lollipop, Encore is Eli Roth and Mikky is the two tiger cubs.

While these may not have a real effect on my opinion of them is does give me somewhat of a visual insight into each person or a way of remembering who they are along with their name and post - sort of like 'putting a face to the name'.

Only occasionally do I see an avatar that really annoys me and instantly makes me go 'uch' but then I read the posts by the person before deciding if my initial avatar reaction was correct :p.

Yeah, like most people; I tend to first think of someone as the same gender of the person in their avatar - especially when the username is gender neutral. Then there are the one's that are easy to spot what they are by how pervy / scantily clad their avatar person is. What I mean by "what" is for you to figure out. :pi:

I don't think assumptions can be made purely on the avatar's appearance - how often the person changes it can be a big clue as well.

Personally, I find it tricky to keep up with people who change their avatars frequently. I'm quite a visual person, so avatars are useful for me to keep track of a person's posts in long threads. Long-term residents like Justin, Elen, Gabi and Esconder are the ones that I can spot immediately, because they never change their avatars.

It doesn't really matter what the picture contains - as has been said, assumptions about character based on a 128x128 pixel icon can be very misleading - the colours, level of detail and mood it creates are more important. The more unusual or striking, the easier it is for me to identify and thus the better I feel about spotting their posts amid the throng :p

Even though it's a Lara avatar, Lemmie's is the avatar I always remember. I just love that picture. I'm able to associate Lemmie with that avatar. Most other people, I can't remember their avatars. At least not their current ones if they regularly change it.

Gosh i hope not. My avatar looks mean.

I tend to dislike people who use a standard Lara avatar. Lara avatars can be good, but a great number of them are very much alike, and I have trouble keeping the people apart then.

Sort of. Usually a person's avatar is related to something they like or something they've made and from that you can sometimes tell what kind of person they are.

My avatar is Jennifer Garner because she is GAWJUSS :cln: and I like Alias :D

It depends on how I associate an avatar with that person. Their avatars and personality would match eachother, rather than affect eachother.

I'm not a woman but, other than that, my avatar says a lot about me especially if you know me well, then you can read a lot into it.

I don't let avatars speak for forum members--their posts do that; although it's cool when, after a while, an avatar just seems to "fit" the person using it.

In my case I seriously hope not!

But seriously... Avatars here are next to meaningless for me. It seems most people just pick a celebrity they like, which says nothing about the person and is sometimes damn confusing. Half of the guys here use female avatars (which is a read head-scratcher to me). This combined with complete lack of profile info make it nearly impossible to determine WHO I'm talking to.

What does it say? :)

I was a lot like Willow growing up; a combination of smart, shy, awkward, lonely, etc. Underneath all that was a caldron of anger and resentment towards those who wronged me... which, had I magic powers like Willow, would have probably taken me over as well.

I conquered all that, however, and overcame those weaknesses--luckily without the same level of drama that Willow had in doing so!

Still... I relate to Willow, especially Evil Willow; there's still always a small part of me that just wants to blow up on everyone! :p

I judge on what's available, and in only a minority of cases does that extend beyond a single post: some people have in one way or another stood out enough for me to remember them, others have to be re-looked at everytime I see a post of theirs. In the latter case, the avatar is one of the pieces of information available so yes, it does play a role.
As others have said, constantly chaning avatars does not smoothen one's way into becoming a part of the familiar minority. Having an interesting avatar does, partly because of the avatar itself, partly because it would reflect positively on my general interest in the person. Having for example Justin Bieber as your avatar significantly increases your chances of having your post being ignored by me, and by extension decreases your chances of having me remember you. :p

I am very careful in selecting my own avatars because I think an avatar should be representative of the person that has it. Kermit currently does a good job at expressing what I think is my general image on this forum. :p

I don't think avatars are that important, honestly. I think they're meant to represent you or what you like, yes, but it's not such a big deal if someone is always changing or has a crappy avvie. I can perfectly be friends with people who like Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga, if they're good people, so obviously I'm not gonna scorn them for their choice of avatar on some video game forum.

I don't tend to picture people as their avatars, but if I like or dislike what they're posting then I quickly associate their avatar with positive or negative connotations.

Of course, but if I do not yet know the person, I've got to get my impressions from somewhere. I realize most people don't take their avatars too seriously as much as I realize that taste in music (or whatever else expressed through the avatar) doesn't have to be related to any other aspect of a person, but I still have to say that anything hinting at interests similar to mine gets a much higher rating than anything hinting at the opposite.

And I didn't mean to give the impression that I thought avatars were a big deal: much more important are of course (in order of increasing importance but decreasing likelihood of familiarity) the post itself, the person's posting history and the person's personality. Nor was I scorning anyone for an avatar on this forum, I was merely saying that while on this or any forum, the avatar does contribute to first impressions, in those cases where first impressions (still on that same forum) are all there is.
