View Full Version : Would you tell your friends/family that you go on TRF

Johnnay

as the title says

for me. no and definitely never. TRF for me is a safe haven from the real world where i can go on and chat to people. i would regret it if i actually told someone that i do go on a chat site like this. it would feel very akward for me

and if it is people wanting to know TRF Friends, it depends. i would allow a few friends maybe to know a few TRFers, but the people i would choose are really mature people, not people who waste their time doing **** and definitely not people who i feel as friends

what is your view on this

:)

Friends and family already know I visit this forum, it's not that big of a deal. It's not like they care.

I certainly have no-one to hide it from, let-alone to tell, lol. :o But my older brother knows I go on 'a Tomb Raider forum'. Not that anyone would actually care.

I really don't understand why anyone here would feel the need to keep the fact that they visit a TR forum secret from their friends. I can only guess that it's some sort of high school peer-related thing about seeming 'cool'. Take it from me; wear your interests on your sleeve, and make no apologies for it.

When you leave school, you find out that most reasonable people will respect your interests anyway, and it's those self-same idiots who spent 5 years laughing at everyone else who then seem sad for having no passions beyond sneering sarcastically at the world around them. As I said - love what you love, and make no excuses for it :tmb:

I agree with this :) If people asked me I would tell them, my parents know I am a huge Lara fan anyhow and most likely guess I visit forums. They know I visit X-Men forums so.. and most of my friends know I'm a Lara fan having dressed up as her for Halloween a few times. Infact a few guys on my course still refer to me as Lara when they see me so I don't see the problem with telling people I visit a Tomb Raider forum. The way I see it if people can't accept me for who I am and what I like they probably aren't worth knowing anyhow.

I can only guess that it's some sort of high school peer-related thing about seeming 'cool'. Take it from me; wear your interests in your heart, and don't be afraid to let them know.

I made some changes to that because when you wear something on your sleeve it makes it kinda like the Barenaked Ladies sang "I have a history of taking off my shirt" meaning that you loose interest. If you enjoy something, hold onto it!! But don't be afraid to let it be known that you enjoy it.

Personally I think most of the people I talk with on a regular basis know that I visit TRF because I'll say something along the lines of "so I was on this forum last night and there was this discussion about XYZ" and they'd be like "oh really? what forum?" so I tell em ;) and then we start discussing whatever the thread was about. of course that happened more often about a year or more ago when it seems like there was more thought provoking stuff around than there is now.

What's the big deal about keeping this sort of social correspondence on the internet private? Of course I tell them, and I feel proud of it! Sure I sometimes get remarks like "don't you have better things to do?" but I never really cared about what other people feel! I am very happy to be a part of this community and I love to come here and post away and that will never change! ;)

Family, friends, they know I visit this forum a lot and that it's one of my favourite forums.

I'd rather not tell my folks. I can already hear it... "Look at you, instead of studying or getting a job you're wasting time on a forum! It's bad enough you play all those video games, now you..." blah blah. They're right though, I waste too much time messing around on the net.

tell em stop wasting their time worrying about what you're wasting your time on :vlol: I hate that a parent would tell a child (because mine did) not to do something they enjoy. Are we seriously any better than another person to deny them their happiness?

I agree here, but I don't keep it a secret because I'm ashamed of it. My friends know I like Tomb Raider, but if I tell them about TRF, they'll want to join just to see what I'm posting, then make it a big deal, become friends with my friends here etc. Would be kinda annoying for me:p

I suppose I can't complain though, I'm still living under their roof... so it's their rules. But yeah, I have noticed that they get annoyed when I'm having fun. It's like every time I'm trying to play a game or watch a show they bust in reminding me to study. I once heard my father saying that he's afraid I'll become a loser. Yeah, thanks for the vote of confidence dad, I made it to university so far but I'll definitely turn into a hobo this year. :pi:

I know what you say, but it's not like they'd join because they like TR and they want to make new friends, it would be like I have...3 stalkers:p Actually, they hate TR and they've made fun of me because of it a million times.

this is just me, but... if you keep caring about what people think and trying to impress them, then you're only trying to make them happy. what is the point of that? why not try and make yourself happy for once instead of everyone else. you gotta remember... nothing is going to be good enough for certain people.

omg, dude, don't I know that well ? my mum keeps heckling me about TRF being a waste when she wastes 2 hours everyday watching Arabic dubbed Turkish soap operas that we know the ending of like 2 months before it ends.

and dad heckles me when he spend every Thursday night watching some Christan priest doing some exorcism **** on tv. Dude, the girls screaming just fills the whole house. My friends were at my place a few days ago and were like "dude, wtf ? your dad watches porn ?"

Shy? But on forums you're totally anonymous (except to the admins, lol!), so that's a perfect ambiance for shy people. I should know... >_> I think that's the best part - you can be totally be yourself and still fit in. :D
