Nintendo has really taken a next big step in controlling the handheld market IMO. The 3DS looks very good. The only thing that might hold it back at all would be price. I have not heard anything about what they expect to get for it.

The PSP is going to have a very stiff competition and even Apple will have to set up and take notice.

It's been confirmed that the 3DS will be fully compatible with DSi games (quoted). There are no DSi games as such, they're all DS games, so yes, it will be compatible with the DS games, but naturally GBA compatibility is lost. Perhaps they can take a leaf from SONY's book and release classics.

I'm not really a portable games kind of guy. The only mobile games I play are the ones I download onto my iPhone from iTunes, but the only legit 'video game' on there is The Sims 3. I'm not really impressed by the 3DS. It's interesting how they incorporated 3D mechanics into gameplay, but other than that, there's nothing that adds to it that'll make me want to get it, even if I had the money and was an avid portable gamer.

Information overload, holy hell. :D

We've just got hands on with a rolling preview of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time on 3DS - and it's good news, folks.

Our quick demo lasted merely two minutes, and featured Link on the back of his trusty steed. (Who was looking far more detailed than we ever remember, not least sparkling eyes, mane and hooves).

The setting faded in from black, with the recognisable music from the original classic game.

We rode our horse over rolling hills and lush greenery - and past imposing trees and a sky-tickling cliff face - until we reached a drawbridge (THE drawbridge). We rode through the arch and onto... well, we can't tell you. The screen faded back out again.

What we can inforom you is that the visuals were masterful - with the greens and yellows of Zelda's world particuarly vivid. The moon setting into the early evening was a treat - emenating ever-decreasing layers of illumination.

Edges were crisp and lighting effects were some of the best we've ever seen in a Nintendo game - not least the glare spots occasionally bleeding over the lens.

The 3D effects themselves were on a par with the Kojima MGS: Snake Eater game we reported on earlier today - with a rising sun and the backgrouns castle in particualr giving the game real depth.

As if faded out, we were treated to the giddy image of the classic Zelda sword and shield - given more body and density than ever before.

We're in on a Q&A with Miyamoto-san and Iwata-san shortly. Stay tooned.

Oh yes. Oh bloodyhell yes.

I quoted this from an article on IGN about MGS Snake Eater on the 3DS
...The graphics look on par with (or even better than) the PlayStation 2 version of Snake Eater – developers told us prior to the debut of the 3DS that the hardware is well beyond Wii and approaching 360/PS3 capabilities with what the system can do, and when you see this demo in action you can see why they would have said that
... No...words to describe that. Just simply shocked.

I just realized something. The specs say that only the top screen is 3D, not the touch screen, so does that mean that all 3DS games will need to avoid using the touch controls except for menus, inventory, and the like? The 3DS also has an analogue nub in addition to the D-pad so I suspect this is the case and it won't use the touch controls very much.

Ah, that's disappointing. The whole appeal of the DS was the touch-screen controls. I guess now that they've got the 3D gimmick they don't need the touch screen anymore :p

Anyway, I'm trying to find concrete proof that the 3DS games (specifically BloodRayne :whi:) will work on my DSi. I haven't found anything saying that, although I did find a few articles saying that in the Fall there will be DSi games that don't work on the DS or DS Lite

Well that's stupid, I have a DS Lite. :/

Which means I have to upgrade, I want to know a date for 3DS so I can sell my DS Lite. But then it puts up the issue of me not playing the KH game coming out for DS until the 3DS comes out. -_-'

Damn you Nintendo.

Yeah, I'm sad now :( I found some site that says 3DS games won't work on older DS or DSi. If the 3DS itself can turn off the 3D effect (which apparently it can with that slider) then why can't the game just default to 3D being off for older consoles? Or is the 3DS significantly more powerful and the DS/DSi isn't fast enough to run the games even in 2D?

Games

The 3DS will be able to run all current games on the market for the Nintendo DS, however it's not the case the other way around. As new features like motion gaming and the 3D elements, the DSi - like the DS before it when the DSi got a camera - won't support all titles going forward.

When games do come out they will be 3DS only and you cannot upgrade DSi games to work in 3D. They have to be made that way first.

For some reason that pic fails to impress me :o The DS version of TRU had pre-recorded cutscenes from the 360 version and they looked better than that picture, so I know my DSi is capable of showing that level of image quality. The question is what does the game do in motion, and would the DSi be capable of keeping up? I haven't seen any 3DS gameplay videos yet so I have no idea.

Ah, I see. I was also considering that the other image looks like an arena based game, so I would expect that to have better graphics because it's got much less to render compared to a large exploration-type game with a big environment. The Ocarina screenshots looked really disappointing to me. They were saying the 3DS is more powerful than the Wii, but those screenshots definitely did not look as good as Twilight Princess does on my crappy 13" TV :p

That's true. Hopefully the game will improve its graphics when it reaches the release. Especially, considering that Dead or alive has always had awesome graphics, considering when it was released.

You can see MGS in motion here. I think that it uses in-game graphics when he walks on a bridge, at least. But it was only a demo, so I'm not sure.

Yes, that does look pretty good :) Damn, I guess this means I can't play the new BloodRayne game on my DSi then :( Although come to think of it, I wonder if BloodRayne: The Shroud is simply a remake of BloodRayne 2 (since the Shroud was what the vampires used in BloodRayne 2 to block out the sun). I was hoping for a continuation since BR2 ended on a bit of a cliff-hanger.

I would doubt it, though it is possible. After all, they are releasing Ocarina of Time again..
I hope my store will come up with one of those excellent offers they usually do.. Basically, if I trade in the console (my DSi) plus a game, I could get it much cheaper. God knows I have some terrible games I wouldn't mind getting rid if in order to get a 3DS.
They had that exact deal when the new DSi released, so here's hoping.

You have to bare in mind that the 3DS games will use the improved graphics and motion sensing capabilities that the original DS doesn't have. Also 3DS games will come on a much larger 2gb game card, with a slightly different form factor too. It's like asking for a PS3 game to be compatible on a PS2, not going to happen. It has backwards capability for old DS games to play on it though, which is great.

Who says it won't? It is due out in Nitendos current financial year, meaning any time from now until about April 2011. There is probably going to be a strong chance that it will be released near Christmas, it would make sense so.

Christmas 2010? I sincerely doubt it, consideringthey announced it to be released 2011.

I'll go with Q3-4 until I am proved otherwise. I just don't see it happening, to be honest. Would be lovely if it was released before though, not going to deny that.

Just 1 feature? Where have you been looking?

Improved graphics
3D display without the need of glasses
Motion sensing and gyroscope
Dual cameras for 3D photos
Improved WiFi connectivity
New slide pad controls
Watch 3D movies

To name a few.

(No GBA port on the 3DS, I did the same with the GBA)

But the 3DS is the successor to the DS, and is the next generation. It is backwards compatible with original DS games (ie, the previous generation). You can't exactly expect them to have backwards compatibility that is 2 generations old, especially when it would take up so much space.

Ps3 did have backwards compatibility right down to the PSOne. I expected them to cut it off outright. A make-up for it would be to do something like the PSOne Classics. They started doing NES Classics for the GBA, why don't they do that with game boy games?

But they all had the same form-factor, a CD, so it didn't affect the design or hardware to do it. As Nintendo are recreating older games for the 3DS, and with no news about how their store works, I would hazard a guess that they'd impliment something like the virtual console for the 3DS.

I might buy this console...Resident Evil will be on it so it's good enough for me.

I wonder if Sony will compete with the new PSP.

Not just one new feature, they are adding quite a few. They are also improving the graphics, so far they look better than the PSP.
Just 1 feature? Where have you been looking?

Improved graphics
3D display without the need of glasses
Motion sensing and gyroscope
Dual cameras for 3D photos
Improved WiFi connectivity
New slide pad controls
Watch 3D movies

To name a few.

But the 3DS is the successor to the DS, and is the next generation. It is backwards compatible with original DS games (ie, the previous generation). You can't exactly expect them to have backwards compatibility that is 2 generations old, especially when it would take up so much space.

Neither of you read what he said correctly.

Well, then it moves it down to 4 DS models.

DS

DS > DS Lite > DSI > DSI XL

DS2 (Basically)

3DS (Basically all the older DS features in 1 with additional features too)

Who knows what Nintendo will release the year after 3DS :(

He said the 3DS basically has all the older features from past DS versions in one model. Not just one new feature. He clearly stated just after-- that it now has additional features as well. :)

Viewing distance and angle would be extremely important for this parallax barrier to work. It doesn't seem practical to use it in a TV which will be viewed by multiple people sitting at different angles and distances from the screen. With a handheld console, however, it's pretty consistent that one person will be viewing the screen at roughly the same angle and distance since it must be held in their hands (as opposed to a TV which can be placed anywhere in the room). The 3DS also has a way to adjust the 3D effect (probably by altering the difference between where the left and right barriers are pointing) so that could compensate if a person's natural way of holding the console is closer to or further from their eyes compared to the average.

Possibly, but the tech has to be seriously refined. I've heard that you have to be looking dead-straight-on at the 3DS to see the 3D effect. That's too much of a limiting factor for TV's.

When I got my hands on the 3DS at the show, I was blown away again. The feature set sounds good but the proof is in the pudding – in the product.

I should stop. I know it. But the 3DS is – seriously – the coolest hardware I’ve ever seen at E3… It’s nothing short of magical, both in the effect the stereoscopic stuff had on me and in the way the tech works. Not that I really understand how it works – not yet anyway! The 3DS was – dare I say it? – almost Disney-like in the magical feeling it evoked in me and I suspect you’ll have a similar reaction when you get your hands on it. And note that I said “when,” not “if.” That was no accident. Trust me – you’re gonna want and you’re gonna get a Nintendo 3DS.

I actually forgot who he was (and I call myself a Deus Ex fan XD) so I looked it up and holy crap, he made Shadowcaster too! I used to love that game when I was little. I still remember parts of it even though I haven't played it on so many years. Damn, I really want to play it now but I think it was on floppy discs so there's no way I could read it on my current PC :p

*ahem* Anyhow, glad to hear he likes it :D I'm cautiously optimistic about this. My vision is so terrible that I wonder if the 3D effect will even work on me (I'll have to see if I can play with a store model at some point after it comes out). There already are 3DTVs working without glasses. However, AFAIK they suffer from low resolution (due to two pictures being displayed at the same time) and a limited viewing angle. So, you'll probably have to wait 2-3 years till those are really worth their price.

You know what else is actually funny about the whole argument? Sony wouldn't be what it is now without Nintendo. The original Playstation was actually designed by both Nintendo and Sony collaboratively as a CD based add-on for the SNES in which Nintendo later dropped. If Nintendo hadn't approached Sony in the first place, everything would be completely different now.

And thus, Nintendo invented the analogue stick on the N64 and designed into into what is now the Playstation controller.

Nintendo have actually revolutionised a hell of a lot in the gaming world, people just don't realise it. For example, once upon a time motion controls and 'casual' games were laughed upon, and now look how the tables are turning...

The Iphone/Ipod Touch is not a console, same goes for a PC (I'll most likely get flamed for this...) it's a multifunctional platform . It's not made for games, it made for other uses. The fact that you can play games on it is an extra function but that doesn't make it a console. If a system is made specificly for games then it's an actual console:)

When Nintendo debuted their upcoming 3DS handheld gaming system at E3, they also revealed a very long list of third party games for the system. It seems that everybody's on board, and they're all bringing their biggest franchises to the system so they can be enjoyed in portable 3D, sans spectacles. In the latest issue of Famitsu, many of these third party developers discuss the 3DS and what it means for the future of gaming. To be more specific, they're discussing how revolutionary it is and how they can't wait to work with it. Following are a few of the quotes from andriasang's translations of the Famitsu interviews.

* Atsushi Inaba, producer at Platinum Games and former CEO of Clover Studio:

“I’m being struck with the intense desire to make something on it. It’s the same sort of excitement I had when I first saw the Wii and DS in Nintendo’s office, but now it’s at a whole new level. This may the first time in the industry where the terms ‘next generation’ and ‘personal dream’ were so appropriate. I’d gladly throw away everything else for a shot at touching the 3DS.”

* Goichi Suda, CEO of Grasshopper Manufacture and director of No More Heroes:

“It really makes me feel the speed at which the history of video games is unfolding — like, ‘We’ve really made it this far, huh?’ You have a living, breathing world you can touch right in your hands. I think we’ve finally gone from an era of constructing virtual worlds from pixels to one where the world is truly, honestly there. If I had to sum up the sort of game I’d like to make, I would simply call it ‘the next game,’ because the 3DS marks the arrival of the ‘next platform.’”

* Hideo Kojima, creator of Metal Gear Solid:

"I wear glasses, so I'm happy that 3D glasses are not needed. I directed the E3 demo. It was based off Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater, but the backgrounds and character modeling were all redone in high polygon. It's not finalized, but we're thinking about CO-OPs and other things -- elements fitting of a 3D and portable game machine."

* Keiji Inafune, head of R&D at Capcom, character designer of Mega Man and producer of Dead Rising:

"Things needed to sell games are concept, technology and marketing. Nintendo 3DS is a showcase of things for selling hardware. While keeping the appeal of portable game machines as is, it offers high processing ability, improved controls, a more appealing design, goggle-free 3D technology, and a robust 3rd party title lineup."

* Toshihiro Nagoshi, Sega, producer of Super Monkey Ball and Yakuza:

“Nintendo has been re-examining the concept of game consoles as ‘toys’ ever since the Wii, and I think the 3DS is the final result of those efforts. If you believe that gamers will demand more social features and immersiveness in their portable single-player or multiplayer experiences, then Nintendo certainly has that covered with the 3DS’s Wi-Fi and 3D features. There’s a lot of ideas I’d like to work with.”

* Hiroyuki Kobayashi, producer of Devil May Cry and Resident Evil 5:

"Our own Resident Evil was shown on the show floor and was well received, but when I saw Metal Gear, I felt the new potential of the 3DS. I'd like to make something."
