I was on Gamespot's Gamefaqs website and noticed these screenshots on the PC version of TR1.

Screenshot 1
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/screenshots/3/29073/tombraid_screen005.jpg

And screenshot 2
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/screenshots/3/29073/tombraid_screen002.jpg

In screenshot 1 you see Larson in Vilcabamba. And in screenshot 2, you see crocodiles in the Lost Valley.

These are just beta. In the second screenshot, you also see 3D broken bridge parts.

@Phlip: The bridge parts are as 3D in the final version as they are there.

First Screenshot: Larson was origionally designed to be the 'pierre' of the peru levels. However this was ditched for reasons unknown to me.

Second Screenshot: Crocs are in the lost valley for two possible reasons.

a) The dinosaur enimies hadnt yet been created.

b) My theory was that the valley was designed to be a dried up riverbed with those waterfalls being 'exhaust pipes' from the main waterfall area (you divert the waterfall, where did you think all that water went?). I think this is quite a good theory as everything seems to point to it being a dried up riverbed. eg. Numerous waterfalls, mossy pebbels for ground, lack of trees/shrubs on ground level with abundance of moss. Valley smoothly cut out of rock (water errosion), Abundance of Trees/Shubs on upper levels. The Bridge; built for easy traversal over the water. Waterfalls in Temple etc...

But later on in production this was switched for everybody's favourite dinosaur.

On a side note: Ive toyed around with the idea (whilst remaking the lost valley in TRLE) of flooding the riverbed after diverting the waterfall. However i never completed this level and so cant link you to anything playable.

They're "objects" in this screenshot, in the final version they're just wafer-thin wooden floor textures.

If those screenshots are of the beta TR1, is there any chance of downloading the beta game.

I've seen shots of the T-Rex in the 1st level with the 3 bridges and wolfs. But I also had a feeling that it was a photo-manipulation. Because some things seemed out of proportion.

As for downloading a beta... Good luck with that. It wouldn't be legal to do anyway... I think. :pi:

It's only legal if you play it on PC, and dont make copies. Also with TR1 Premier edition, you can download TR2 Demo :)

Does anyone know where I can get the beta of TR1 then, or infact any over TR game between 1 and AoD.

If the first picture was true city of villacabamba would have been more intersting and a better level and the second (don't get me wrong i love the idea of dinosaurs)looks as if the crocs belong there.

I would guess lead time. The company that produced the packaging might have required the images to print the box months before the game was ready.

Neither Eidos nor Core have ever officially released any beta versions and when one for TR2 got out before the game did they lost no time in having it removed. So if it is not officially released it is illegal to host and download it. They do not usually bother with the old games now, but that does not make it any more legal. Most sites who host beta versions will not host the Tomb Raider ones for fear of prosecution. So no we do not know where you could find any Beta code for TR1, although some does exist.

It is not that unusual to see Beta pictures in the covers, covers and books have to be done a fair bit before the game is finished. Even AOD used Beta screenshots for the cover.

Perhaps Larson's role in the early parts of the game was diminished to make the game easier at the begining and they decided to have Pierre stalking Lara instead. Or maybe they were both going to be doing it and they still cut Larson's extra appearances out for the same reason.

But the premier edition is from Eidos, NOT third party. On the second disk of TR1UB, you can download the demo for TR2.

yes on my ps1 case on the back there is one pic of lara shooting larson in the second level

but i think they took out larson because they thought it would be a little hard for players at first. so they let them warm up with the peru levels and have pierre stalk her in the greece levels. i think it wouldent have been hard though. and it would have been cool to have that happen! also if natla stalked lara in the atlantis levels too! they should have done that.

Actually I'm pretty sure Larson was your partner until the end but they cou;dnt (yet) stop you from shooting him or vice versa, or even get him to shoot enemies.

Lara never had a partner, Tomb Raiders was a single player game, but you could choose a male or female character to play both were not going to be on the screen at the same time. When the male character was dropped because of his similarity to Indiana Jones the game became Tomb Raider (except in Japan) Lara was never going to have a partner.

Edit - And Lara is hardly likely to be shooting her partner.

The three screeshots above are from the very fine collection of early screenshots available from the crofttimes site (http://www.crofttimes.com/games/tombraider/screens.asp). Please do not hotlink to the screenshots on the site if you want to use them though, upload them to an image server.

My honey,

Those beta screens look lovely. For some reason, the graphics look better than they actually are  Well, it's just the size of the screen shot I assume.

Wow, is this the same Croft Times that existed like WAY back in the day...I think Luis Cunha(?) ran it, and it was around circa 1996?

If so, I'm very happy to see them back around. Thought for sure they were gone for good.

I could not see any connection apart from the name, the original site had a lot of good stuff such as its news archive that the newer site does not. And as you pointed out the original (http://web.archive.org/web/20050205015553/http://www.cubeit.com/ctimes/archive/index.html) was copyright 1997-2001, CUBE Lda./Luis Cunha and the newer version is copyright 1998-2010 - Mitzu Media. The newer one is a sister site of Tomb Raider News Channel and has only existed since 2008.

Thanks for the research Aussie :). I miss that old site. I used to run a TR site circa 1998 that was called The Tomb Raider Information Highway, but I doubt anybody really knows about it lol.

Unfortuantely I never had the internet back then and was dependent on a few minutes hunting for new info on the next game at a friends place. What was your site address though, we could probably still see it if it was archived. I often hunt through the old Croft Times site for info.
