Dense clusters of fires send plumes of smoke hundreds of kilometers long into the atmosphere above Northern China and Eastern Russia in this true-color Aqua MODIS image from October 15, 2004. The smoke from the Chinese fires at upper left is more than 100 km wide, while the Russian fires' smoke is about half that. Above the scene, bright white cirrus clouds contrast with the greyish-tan smoke and deep brown land.

The fires in this scene are marked in bright red. With the onset of fall, these fires are likely to be agricultural in nature. Farmers often use fire to clear vegetation after the harvest in preparation for the coming winter. While fires can help rejuvenate the land, the smoke they release can have a strong impact on weather, climate, human health, and natural resources.
