View Full Version : Ever found a video game hard to do and then years later, found it easy to do?

The title isn't very good, but this will spell it out:

When I was young, I played games like TR2, TR4 and FF7 as well as Aladdin: Nasira's Revenge. Ok, I was around 6 or 7 when I played those games and there was certain parts that I should never get past. Then, replaying those games when I'm 14, I found them easy and still wonder why I even got stuck on those parts.

So, have you ever, in your younger years, got stuck at a certain part in a game and then several years later, replay them and find it easy to do?

TR4, couldn't complete it when I was around 7/8! Then I came back to it recently, and completed it! :)

I remember when I played FFX when I was 9 and I kept killing the sinspawn on S.S. Liki, when you had to use magic or use Wakka's Ball to attack Sin's Fin.

in Legend of Dragoon.. the dragon that was suppose to end the world or whatever i could never get past him when i was younger (can't remember what age) but i started a new game and leveled the hell out of my characters before getting to that part and killed him. i was well prepared. ;)

Definitely, the old Tomb Raiders notably. (Although maybe not IV and parts of V; they can still be really tricky!) Final Fantasy X is another.

Final Fantasy X.

An epic game if there was ever a one. It was sooooooooo difficult back then, but now- now it's a walk in the park.. and beautiful park if that. :p

Totally. Most recently I replayed King Kong: The Official game of the movie. When I played it for the first time, I was 13 or so already, and still some parts were hellish to me. Then, replaying it at my 17s, I found it almost too easy.

Yeah, I've experience that many times. I'm guessing your skills evolve, and you just find it easier :p

And when I was fighting Safer Sephiroth, I wondered why my attacks were doing so low, it was because he had cast Wall on himself, but at the time I didn't know what the hell was going on!

Seymour, at Mt. Gagazet! HOLY COW that was hard, back in the day.

However, recently, I've been replaying and I've made it just past him... without a gameover... It seems so strange to be totally owning everything when last time everything was so HARD!

Bevelle was hard with those machinas that did the Thrust Kicks and all that.

Yeah! That was annoying! Especially if they kicked out Auron or Lulu, in the former, it meant I had to use way more "life" spells, and in both it meant the battles took ages longer because of their ability to deal so much more damage compared to other characters.

That happens to me with lots of games :p For example, TR1-6, StarCraft, or Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. There's also the flip-side -- I've little patience for game limitations (such as a checkpoint saving system) especially if I've already won the game. So on replays I find things to be easier, but if I hit an annoying point and get screwed over by the checkpoints a few times in a row I lose interest and move on to a different game.

I still find SoT and all the Prince of Persia's of that trilogy quite hard, combat wise :o

More like the other way around. I've started playing old retro games that I used to play as a kid, and I remember getting through them really easily now they just seem much more difficult. =\

Kingdom Hearts 1, ugh Ursula:(

There are a few games I found hard a while ago, but I havent tried since.

FFX

The incredibles game (Incredibly hard and boring)

Sonic Rivals 2 - You wouldnt think a Sonic game could be so hard:(

Driver 2 and 3 spring to mind. It took me months to beat them the first time round, and I had to use cheats to complete Driver 3, but I replayed them a few years later and got through both of them quite easily, in about five days, with no cheats.

I also found Final Fantasy X much easier after the first playthrough. I just resisted the temptation to flee every fight, which seemed to make the rest of the game much easier.

When I first played FFX, I was impatient and skipped right past the tutorials lol. And I didn't know you needed to use the sphere grid to learn new stuff, so that caused a lot of problems. I got up to the bit where you fight Seymour or whatever that half guado man is called. I'm surprised I made it that far without using the sphere grid :p

I was stuck on that bit for months!

Sanity: Aiken's Artifact is definitely the hardest game I've ever played:mad: This game is really fun but it has a lot of hard puzzles:eek: I was stuck on a certain bit for 4 years(I was 12 at the time) where I was supposed to get into a church but didn't know how to do the puzzle. I figured out how to do it eventually though by having to look up a walkthrough online since I didn't have internet at the time when I got stuck.:o Now its almost a breeze for me to play through now.

Other games I found hard are Tomb Raider AoD(mostly the bad controls), Jak 2 and 3(a lot of the challenges are really difficult) and Batman Vengeance(puzzles are confusing sometimes and the cheat envelopes were hard to find the first time I played the game:o).

Batman Returns on Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. I've got to stop mentioning this game but it's the one I spent years trying to beat. No one in my family could get past Shrek's Department store. Now I can beat the game in 30 minutes (and the only one who can beat it without continues). :D

I would say Tomb Raider 1, but this is mostly because the disk got scratched so bad I couldn't play it until it got on PSN.

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine :p Used to get stuck in a bunch of parts in that, then came back to it sometime later and had no problems.

Syphon Filter 3

It had a very difficult escort mission in a canyon area. That was very challenging. Along with a tricky tank mission. Surprisingly, I got through those quickly and easily several years later in a replay.

Oh, regarding FFX. Since, it has been mentioned by quite a few posters. Rikku's mixes are very handy! Especially, Trio of 9999 and Quartet of 9999.

FFX's deceptive difficulty is ingenious! Meaning, it has a certain degree of challenge if you don't know about Rikku's very powerful and useful mixes. The first time I played I thought FFX was quite hard at times. Like with Seymour Flux and Yunalesca.

The regular NSG challenge isn't really overly difficult either. That's why lots of FFX fans play crazy variants of the NSG.

I will also say the earlier Tomb Raider games were much easier the second time playing through. Since, originally a lot of the difficulty is trying to figure out how to get to a certain location and what exactly to do next.

Argh, sorry for rambling. :D
