View Full Version : Most Enjoyable Characters To Control In A Video Game.

So I figured this may be a very important part of gaming but one that may be overlooked.

Out of all the games you have played, which game was the most enjoyable when it came to controlling the avatar? For what specific reasons?

I'll post my answer in a while when I know what it is.:p

Sora/Roxas, Kingdom Hearts II. The controls were incredibly smooth and Sora/Roxas were just fun to control during platforming & combat.

Legend of Lara

The protagonists of Persona 3 and Persona 4.

http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090901104134/megamitensei/images/f/fa/P3PMaleProtagonist.jpg http://nukoda.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/protagonist2.jpg

The games go out of their way to make you feel like you are them. As a result, I got really attached to these two polygon piles.

And then Atlus just laughs and says "Oh, you like the protagonists? WELL TOO BAD! The P3 protag dies a horrible death and the P4 protag moves away from his loyal group of friends! Hahalol"

Not really sure who is the best character to control, perhaps the characters from Resident Evil. I'll tell you who isn't enjoyable to control and that's Lara Croft, in both old and new games. The gammy controls and camera have cost me so many deaths in those games.

They weren't as agile as Mario but their sheer number of special tricks and moves made controlling them so much fun. Banjo Kazooie <3

Oh ya, I could just run around in that game all day, the controls were great, the camera in the first game was sort of annoying, esspecially during the battle against Rikku, there was a running in circles tactic and I had to keep pressing the bumper buttons to turn the camera.:)

Yeah, KHII is a good example at how sequels can improve flaws from the first game. The camera was very easy to use in KHII and it never got in the way. KHII's controls never bothered me, and still don't.

Definitely Banjo and Kazooie :p
How about Link in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time? I used to have a lot of fun playing that back in the days of the N64 :p Loved the controls and the character as well.

Lara Croft- it's Lara Croft!
Nathan Drake- very realistic character to control
Buffy- You get to do pretty realistic moves and you get to stake vampires
Chris Redfield/Sheva Alomar- makes me feel like I'm right there with them... just looking over their shoulders :p

I liked Altair because his movements are very realistic, and they respond perfectly well to controls. I never experienced any issues with camera, bugs, etc. And I also liked that he moves at a realistic speed, because I hate game characters moving too fast.

TRA Lara >>> TR Lara

Simple explanation if you don't agree: Play any silent hill game with 2D control then switch it to 3D. All of a sudden the game starts to become really enjoyable. Same rule applies here.

Yes but you can't compare a character's movement separated from the world they're moving in. For the environment of TR1, Lara moved perfectly well. For the environment of TRA, Lara moved in often glitchy and clumsy ways. In my opinion at least.

Call me old fashioned, but I was just recalling the days I used to play 16-bit and the first time I got gunstar heroes was like a massive step up from contra on so many levels. It's one thing being able to shoot everywhere, but to control red and blue with all kinds of action moves was something games weren't used to at the time.

I really enjoy controlling Cole in inFAMOUS. :)

Mainly because it isn't precise and you have to be someone careful if you don't feel like falling. Controlling him is...a blast. I love trying to trying jump on tiny platforms like streetlights. :D

Nate from Uncharted is fun to control too, but sometimes his movements look a liittle strange and awkward.

Assassin's Creed characters are a blast to conrol. So much freedom! I love it. :)

I really enjoy Lara's movements in Anniversary, but they're terrible in Underworld. :/

Shark_Blade
07-08-10, 03:37
Classic Lara - with the grid system. It's so precise you can take 100% control of her with ease. And I love how Lara catwalks slowly and casually. In CD's games she walks like a man/monkey.

Nathan Drake - You know you love him just fine.

Bayonetta - So smooth, sexy and elegant character. I just love her catwalk.

Sly Cooper - I always love this knieving little thief. He's so agile and slick, dodging police and enemies in a snap.

Sonic the Hedgehog - I could control Sonic in most of the games, be it Sonic Riders, Sonic Heroes, etc - save for one, Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 (next gen) game. A bit of work needed there to maintain my sanity lol.

Link - Legend of Zelda : Twilight Princess.

Alpharaider47

I forgot to add Indiana Jones from Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb :p Loved that game and the controls were pretty decent, plus... it's Indy, and you can whip swing, need I say more?

Shark_Blade

Rubi Malone: I love the whole "over the top acrobatics" idea of the game. And although the game was pretty awful (IMO), I think the controls were executed very well.

Sydney Bristow: I know I'm a little biased when it comes to this game, but I really love how Sydney controls. And I love the fighting mechanics. However she did seem a bit heavy.

Anniversary Lara Croft: IMO controlling Lara was absolutely perfect in Anniversary. Her moves were fluid, she wasn't too light *cough*UNDERWORLD*cough* , and I just think this was the perfect Lara controls-wise

Nathan Drake: PERFECT, end of story.

Ratchet and Clank/Jak and Daxter/Sly Cooper- All three of these franchises had great and responsive controls.

Lara Croft from TR1-5/TRLE Custom Levels- Same reasons as Shark_Blade.

Prince of Persia SoT Trilogy- The controls worked alright for the most part, besides the occasional getting hit by a trap or accidentally falling to your death. The Chariot races in Two Thrones can get frustrating to control sometimes though,.

I have to say everyone from almost all the games I have xD
Be it inFamous, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword!

Cole from inFamous
Nariko from Heavenly Sword
Nathan Drake from Uncharted and Uncharted II
Sackboy from LittleBigPlanet
Jak from Jak and Daxter series
Sly Cooper from Sly Cooper series
Ratchet from Ratchet and Clank series
Bayonetta from Bayonetta
Ezio and Altair from Assassin's Creed

Late Lara Croft doesn't work very good. Prince of Persia, the controls are just buggy in my opinion. Especially in Forgotten Sands. In Prince of Persia (2008) it was better.

My character from Farmville aswell xD

Sonic the hedgehog + friends (except Gamma, Omega, Vector and Silver) So easy to play as them:p I could (and have) spent hours playing as them. The only game that I couldnt do that with is Sonic 06 (next gen) like Shark_Blade said.

The CD Lara's. I thought they were really easy to control. I thought that the classic ones had sticky controls:p

The characters of FFVII - Very easy to control, and the battles are simple to navigate too.

Manny Calevera - When you first play Grim Fandango hes hard to control, but once you get used to it, its quite easy:p

Bayonetta - So fluid and Smooth and so many different combos at your use. Plus with all the weapons she aquires there are almost endless amounts of ways to beat up those naughty angels. :p

Sonic the Hedgehog - In the Mega Drive and Dreamcast games at very least. Sonic is so fluid and so unrigid, you have a great feel of freedom and speed to just run.

Lara Croft - Exploring and discovering as Lara feels so rewarding. She may have been a little bit rigid in older games but finally reaching the end of that tomb feels very rewarding. Discovering those small gems and climbing around that incredibley huge architecture to finally open the passage way under the gigantic Shiva statue feels great.

Batman - Once I got the hang of things in Arkham Asylum I had a lot of fun discovering all the different ways I could take out the armed guards without even being seen. Oh yeah, he also had a seriously smexy cape, it moves around so realistically as Batman does and just looks so real.

Aside from Kabuto, preceding him were the crew from Rampage and Donkey Kong who wasn't even 1/4 scale. There's been a few games on King Kong himself, but that was Hollywood's version and nothing short of 2D side scrollers.

I would have to say:

Ratchet (Ratchet and Clank) very smooth controls and is very realistic. I feel very connected to the character when I control him. I feel like I can feel his weaknesses and his strengths in the way he fights.

Nathan Drake (Uncharted series) very realistic controls as well and he feels like an actual human being (which is how he is supposed to feel). I feel like I am playing as some average joe who is going through this extraordinary adventure, which is how they wanted the game to feel so therefore they nailed it.

Lara Croft (older games) I think we all know why

Sly Cooper (Sly series) fluid controls and easy to control. I feel like a thief whenever I play this game (as I should haha considering the character is a thief) and I find it is easy to sneak around and also run away when the time comes if I get caught. The controls are responsive and work well.

Lara Croft from Tomb Raider 1-5. She offers more precision and consistency than any other video game character I can think of, and she's a pretty good character herself if you ask me. The camera never gets in the way, either, which is nice.

Spider-Man in Spider-Man 2 (the game of the movie), Ultimate Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3 springs to mind. Web-swinging is so much fun!

Faith from Mirror's Edge was also fun to control, with those leaps and last-second grabs. With the game being in first-person, you get quite an adrenaline rush as far as video games go.

You've got to love controlling Mario too, with all of his jumps and flips. I spent a lot of time just messing around with Mario in Super Mario 64 outside of the castle.

There are also certain characters that I really like to play as in sports games. There's Roger Federer in the Virtua Tennis series (playing as Federer feels great just because he is really good!), Lennox Lewis in Fight Night Round 4 (taking advantage of Lewis's height and reach and just jabbing away at the opponent) and Brock Lesnar in the WWE and UFC games (in the WWE games you can pick everybody up and slam them down or toss them through the air with ease, whereas in the UFC games you can get on top of your opponent and just punch them really hard from the mount), among many others.

lol, adjusted it to make it look more natural, but honestly Lara needs some color on her. But yes, she was so much fun to control in GOL.

I liked the tanning in the other pic.Whether it was fake or not Lara should stay to the sun sometimes! Wouldn't it be cool to have a tanned Lara to play with, not too black just like the other image you uploaded.

I liked controlling the Prince, Altair/Ezio, Lara (depending on the game) and Nate Drake in terms of their motion and abilities, but a they were frustrating at times. Faith was fun, although obviously it didn't really feel like you were playing as her, and I really loved gliding through the air as Cole in InFamous. :D
I really enjoy playing as characters that can move gracefully and fluidly, that's why I love platforming games.

I found Lara in Anniversary and Legend very fluid, those controls were well done (other than the backwards jump from wall-running).

Sora/Roxas in the KH games are also very good - the combat is easy to learn but still enjoyable enough to not get boring. It also looks really impressive. :D

I also really liked the control system in Mirror's Edge, though you do get the occasional mishap (mostly on timed runs).

Ezio in ACII was alright after I got used to the controls, but not so much at first. Otherwise, he moves very well, and is a joy to watch.

And I can't think of others, currently. :D

Mine is easily Ezio from Assassin's Creed 2.
I love the way he moves, great control. And he's just my favourite game character.

Out of every game I've played, I'd have to say that Nathan Drake and TRA Lara are the two characters that maneuvre the best imo
