Poll requested by t-raider26 :)

The last poll (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=131739) was two years ago, so I think a new poll is called for :) Also, I've heard lots of arguments over what counts as a continent but there doesn't seem to be any clear consensus, so I'm just going with the ones that I learned in school :p

I'd also like to free Antarctica from its icy prison and claim it as my own. I'd find the lost city of Atlantis (because everyone "in the know" knows that's where it's hidden) and use the advanced technology to subjugate the world to my will.

Africa is poorly represented. But there are more members from there. Some of the northern, Arab countries might consider themselves part of the Middle East, and therefore Asia.

The EU was started by the French because we wouldn't let them into the Commonwealth. At that time the Commonwealth was made up of former colonies of the UK :D

At some point the Tory government signed the UK up to the EU and the recent Labour Government......less said the better. We're *in* Europe as in the EU but I wouldn't say we are of Europe, merely an Island slightly to the East :D

That's what i at least prefer to think. I for one refuse to consider myself European.........that's MY opinion and PERSONAL choice.

cuz they are detached (literally) from Europe, and they sort of have their own culture and such that isnt realted entirely to Europe.

I guess it would kinda be like how Puerto Ricans doent consider themselves Americans; they are legally US citizens, but they arent actually Americans in the figurative sense.

Not really, the rest of Europe is just as different from each other as the UK is from Europe. If any most European countries were Islands, it would be the same for them. Nobody can say that the UK isn't part of Europe, yet throw France, Norway, Lithuania, Greece and Croatia, for example, under the same group, when they are all much more different from each other, in culture, language, distance from each other etc.

It's just snobbery and pride. Most British people are descended from germanic people, we have lots of European cultures and traditions, and a Germanic Language (except for Cornish, Welsh and Gaelic languages).

It's like if Japanese people were to claim it's not part of Asia, or Madagascar part of Africa. Just acknowledging that the UK is in Europe doesn't make it lose it's cultural identity in any way.

Well that's pretty redundant.

I think it's fine if British people don't consider themselves European as an identity, I don't myself.

But to say that it's not part of the continent Europe, or is culturally independant from Europe, is just incorrect, that's what I was saying.

Europe/Eurasia.

Even if UK got invaded by some other country, it wont make them part of that continent of which they belong to. I find it silly. I am from Scandinavia, but I cannot say that that is my continent of origin, now can I? Even though it is very different from the rest of Europe :)

First time I've heard of Australia as a continent though. I thought it was Australasia/Oceania or something along those lines.

Erm.. they are two different continents. Continental plates to be precise. And there are two smaller plates right between South and North. As far as I know, those have not blended in to one gigantic plate.

Eurasia actually covers quite a bit of Asia, but Europe is considered (fictional as it is) to end at Ural mountains in Russia.

Australian plate has India in it if I remember correctly.

I have searched on internet and I founded this:

"A continent is one of several major land masses on the earth. There is no standard definition for the number of continents but you will commonly find that the numbers six or seven are used.

By most standards, there are a seven continents - Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. Most students in the United States are taught that there are seven continents.

European Division of Continents

In Europe and other parts of the world, many students are taught of six continents, where North and South America are combined to form a single continent of America. Thus, these six continents are Africa, America, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, and Europe.
Many scientists now refer to six continents, where Europe and Asia are combined (since they're one solid geologic landmass). Thus, these six continents are Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Eurasia, North America, and South America.

Geographers divide the planet into regions, and generally not continents, for ease of study. Various geographers have various definitions of these world regions. This Official Listing of Countries by Region divides the world into eight regions: Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, Europe, North America, Central America and the Caribbean, South America, Africa, and Australia and Oceania".

Good for you for doing your research :p :tmb:

Europe shouldnt be considered as an continent, but as in my edited post, this peninsula that we call europe fictionally ends at the ural mountains. North, central and south America are seperated by the two plates of ''central'' America.

It is just about how we see culturally most of the time. Indians could call themselves Australians!

Well, am not 100% sure about the last one, as I cannot remember correctly.

Australia is a continent, too... The reason New Zealand and Papua New Guinnea are listed under "Australia" is because they're all broken off "chunks" from the Australian mainland. Which can explain why Japan is part of the continent of "Asia" and the UK apart of "Europe". They haven't got continental plates of their own - they all share one with the greater landmasses after which the continents are so named.

I've only heard it known as Australasia or Oceania, not Australia.

Edit;
Apparently it depends on the definition, if you treat a continent as a single, undivided land mass, then yes, Australia is one (and so is Zealandia).

Thanks for clearing that up. I was confused because we don't refer to NZ or Papua New Guinnea or the surrounding Pacific Islands as a part of Australia, hence the name Oceania.

But in this context at least, Australasia can still work, though not entirely accurate. Guess I will vote "Australia" then. :D

I don't know why so many people are overreacting out of nothing. People have different ways of naming and counting continents depending on where they are from. So the thread opener put options you don't usually use, you still fit in one of the options anyway (unless you were born in an ocean or outside earth).

7 continents - North America South America Antarctica Africa Europe Asia Australasia
6 continents - North America South America Antarctica Africa Eurasia Australasia
6 continents - America Antarctica Africa Europe Asia Australasia
5 continents - America Antarctica Africa Eurasia Australasia
4 continents - America Antarctica Afro-Eurasia Australasia

The seven-continent model is usually taught in China and most English-speaking countries.
The six-continent combined-Eurasia model is preferred by the geographic community, Russia, the former states of the USSR, and Japan.
The six-continent combined-America model is taught in Latin America, and most parts of Europe including Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain. This model may be taught to include only the five inhabited continents (excluding Antarctica) — as depicted in the Olympic logo.

The names Oceania or Australasia are sometimes used in place of Australia. For example, the Atlas of Canada names Oceania,as does the model taught in Latin America and Iberia.

Most people recognize seven continents—Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia, from largest to smallest—although sometimes Europe and Asia are considered a single continent, Eurasia.

The terms Oceania or Australasia are sometimes substituted for Australia. For example, the Atlas of Canada names Oceania,[14] as does the model taught in Latin America and Iberia.[23]

New Zealand is actually part of Zealandia or Tasmantis, a submerged continent, and is not part of the Australian continent, because it is not on the some continental shelf.

Oceania is a region, not a continent, that contains Australia, New Zealand and may others, but it is not a continent.

Perhaps the thread title should ask what area of the world, rather than continent, because Australia IS a continent, and Oceania is not.

To name only 5 continents is incorrect - Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia are 7 continents. New Zealand would probably be classified as an island now.
