View Full Version : Help with internet usage - am I likely to go over my limit?

Well my limit is 100gb per month.

-I have Xbox live silver but rarely ever download things from the Xbox Live Marketplace.
-I download a few films (on average maybe 1 a day, not in HD)
-I browse a lot (facebook, youtube and general browsing.)
-I sometimes download music from itunes (not too often, just a few songs a week)

I think you should be fine. The average movie may be between 200-700mb I think. Multiply that by 30 gives you a maximum of about 21GB. The other things won't use that much of your limit up.

So is there any such thing as unlimited downloads, or is it prohibitively expensive?

100GB is pretty epic - you should be fine. Is it split into peak and off-peak?

I'm pretty sure that the current package I have at my house includes unlimited free download, although virgin media has their stupid net management thing.

Not my fault I like to download : (

I don't understand unlimited downloads or unlimited internet usage on phones. What's the point of paying extra and then your still bound by the fair use policy.

It's actually a very amusing hypocrisy when you see unlimited downloads being advertised. The companies that provide this service aren't stupid. They know exactly who their advertising is aimed at: people who pirate movies and music. Nothing more. Because why else would anyone need it? ;) These companies are profiting well from piracy too, but no one seems to be bothered with that simple fact.

Or those who legally download music from iTunes, movies from iTunes, TV shows/sesasons from iTunes; those who watch movies/videos on Netflix, Youtube, or Hulu; those download Linux isos, create Linux isos, or torrent Linux isos; those who legally upload their videos to YouTube, Yahoo!, or Metacafe. Is that enough of a list of people who need unlimited downloads to show that it's not just for pirates? ;)

I have unlimited because that's the way I like it. No restrictions, no potential downloading problems. End of/!

I used to have 20GB with my current internet package but it randomly got increased to 30GB:eek: I think my internet provider must have updated the amount because of the unbelievable amount of times the internet cut out:mad:

I don't understand why people pay for limited amount of bandwidth. We have Comcast high speed and it's $40 a month but it's great.. unlimited usage and all.. I'd highly recommend it.

I pay $120 a month for 10 Gigabytes. For some people, there's simply no better option :(

Ooh really? :( What kind of speeds do you get? On average my speed is around 15 mb download and 5 mb upload.

When it's not slowed? Around 250 kb/s DL I'm not sure on UL. When it's slowed - between a few thousand bytes/s and about 4kb/s. (The connection becomes really unstable and often drops out when it's slowed).

Australia, and not even rural!

But not all hope is lost, the current government has laid down $80 billion on this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Broadband_Network ("...an Open Access Network providing download speeds of 1000 Megabits per second[2] to 93% of Australian homes and businesses...")

So let's just pray they get re-elected today or internet upgrades will be put off for another few decades and we'll be left even more behind than we already are.

Oh, wow. Yeah, I remember hearing Australia has some of the worst ISPs out there. :o

US Rural areas are about the same. Around $100 for 1MB if you're lucky, 256KB if not. With 10GB or less monthly limit.
But there are off-peak hours (middle of the night) where it doesn't count toward your limit.

I love the fact my Home network gives me 60GB allowance but my MiFi is unlimited with no fair use but it blocks off P2P and VOIP Apps but it does allow skype video chat, Apple iPhone4 Facetime <-- Which I do all the time! So i'm gold!. But come on. Wasting 100GB. Dude I downloaded Lost S3 In HD and it didn't kill my 60GB allowance! Perhaps don't do DataShocks!

I have a 60GB limit each month which I rarely go over, and I do download a fair bit. You'll be fine with what you do on your limit.

Chloe

Get yourself a network monitoring tool, that will warn yo when you get close to limits.

There should be free and trusted software tools available.

I myself do not know one, because I am without transfer limits. But seeing so many members here are on limits, some of them hopefully can point you to some free and trustworthy tool for this.

Actually mobile broadband apps even though you don't use it find mifi ones because it can still monitor wifi traffic. And since most mobilebroadbands come with limits just set it in the preferences and as you get close a warning message will pop up xD

Yeah, there's pizza hut in Finland, as well as here in the Netherlands :p

We don't have any limit to download, nor is it expensive to have a fast internet o.o This is like the first time I actually here about such thing as a limit for internet!

"....Books plane ticket following by google mapping pizza hut locations close to apartments in safe nice respected areas!" :jmp: :jmp: Although your folks upload is a little stale for 100mb download. Although I heard the FinLand Government is giving everyone there the right to free 100mb by 2015. Finland must be smaller than where I live in SanFrancisco or he needs to share his cash with me xD

I've been on Time-Warner's Roadrunner service for 5 years and I Youtube a ton sometimes. So far I have yet to see a bill for usage limits so I'm questioning if youtube actually counts toward the limit?

Also have to ask if anyone is trapped with Comcast? From what I recall they're the one's responsible for this bandwith capping BS in the first place.

24-08-10, 00:17
Nope.
The only thing you get to choose here is the company and the speed of your broadband.
Connect and you do whatever you want with your net.

Maybe I misunderstood your question.
