Hi guys!

i am an excited fan of tomb raider by crystal dynamics, and an amateur photographer.......it's a long time that i have been asking to myself what were the real places which inspired so much the creators of these last tomb raider games.........and that's because i was quite sure that even if the stages are not real, there was something true behind.......

so, after having some suspects, i have had also the luck to talk with a secret guy (can't tell you who he is because he asked me to not reveal him) who helped me understand some locations.......so, now, for me, it's time to prepare the luggage and go!!

but before doing it, i'd like to show you something

you can see these places in video or photos.......as you prefer.......

take a look!!

Well, obviously, most game devs will research real life locals and such as inspiration and referances - maybe even textures too.

The Thailand comparison area in real life - I've seen it in a movie once or twice though I forget what film it was ..

The same with games like Resident Evil - Raccoon City in RE2 once had a Coco Cola logo on several signs in the street areas - although it was blue, not red, and this was removed by copyright laws.

Silent Hill 2 - The southside half of Silent Hill, south of Lake Toluca, is apparently based on Maine, U.S. While Lake Toluca is a real lake too - although I forget where it is loated exactly.

Whoa can we get more of these?!

Mytly
24-08-10, 19:44
Very interesting comparisons. :tmb:

Most of them are not technically the real counterparts of the fictional places depicted in the games - for example, Bayon Temple is in Cambodia, not Thailand; Salto Angel (Angels Falls) and the Tepui mountains are in Venezuela, not Bolivia; Victoria Falls is in Zambia/Zimbabwe, not Ghana. But it's obvious from the photos that the designers of the games took their inspiration - and in some cases, outright photos - from these places. :)

Moving this thread to General Chat, as it relates to a number of the games.

Those are great! Speaking of comparisons, I was lucky enough to see Trajan's Market for real, and all I could think of was how it looked just like the level (albeit with a lot less gameplay). Playing Tomb Raider's not the best historical education, but still fairly educational. :D

Well, it is no secret that CD visited real places for inspiration for some of the areas in TRU, there was a Dev's diary on it. So it makes sense that they did the same for TRL too. Some of the comparisons are quite something. CD did an amazing job of recreating them, adjusting parts where they wanted changes, even conveniently 'moving' places/architecture from Cambodia (example) to Thailand :p.

I guess they have had to model the area after the original, that or a coincidence, a strange one at that. :ton:

Same here, I also like Mexico a lot. It's dim, but in a good way, it gives it that sense of fear, while Thailand is bright and happy. :D

In my albums I have posted pics from all my travels. Whenever I go to a place Lara has visited, I take a pic. If you take a look, you will see a lot of exact locations or at least TR familiar.

Paris (Louvre & Metro entrance... so AOD!)
http://www.tombraiderforums.com/album.php?albumid=205

Crete (Dolphins in Palas Midas pool)
http://www.tombraiderforums.com/album.php?albumid=202

Santorini (Where the TR2 movie's opening was shot)
http://www.tombraiderforums.com/album.php?albumid=200

Venice (It totally felt like TR2)
& Prague (My hotel was close to the Strahov, so I visited it. It's a monastery-no pics here)
http://www.tombraiderforums.com/album.php?albumid=199

Thailand & Cambodia (So many familiar places... TR4, TR Underworld & TR1 movie-in the pic I pretend to hold a gun, is the exact spot a scene was shot)
http://www.tombraiderforums.com/album.php?albumid=198

Egypt (Doesn't get more TR than that. I even wore a TR shirt at the pyramids. Lara poses and lots of TR feeling)

If you have any comments on the pics, I'd love to see them. :)
