The long rumored Playstation Phone might be real afterall. Engadget posted pictures of a very PSP looking Sony Ericsson smartphone.

From what they said, it features Google's Android platform and a new Sony marketplace to download PSP Games.

Sony, on the other hand, has been really secretive when questioned about it and is yet to confirm anything.

According to Engadget, the picture is of a "legitimate working prototype" of the up to now fabled device.

I have been a big fan of my iPhone 3G, and never felt like the iPhone 4 offered much any bigger groundbreaking features for me to pay for an upgrade, but if it turns out that this piece of hardware is true, which more than likely it is considering Sony's secrecy on the whole thing, then I'll definitely be trading my iPhone in for this. :D

Great, so first there's the Microsoft Windows 7 phone, and now there's the Sony PlayStation Phone, on top of the iPhone 4.. :hea:

Too many phones to decide on! :vlol:

This one looks pretty nifty. Thanks for the notice, other Matt. ;) :tmb:

I never considered my iPhone much of a gaming device though. Don't get me wrong, at my job at Best Buy there were two employees who our management team chose to send out to train in the district Apple meeting to be Apple specialists. I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of them. So as you can imagine, I think that from manufacturing hardware to firmwares and softwares, Apple has gotten the throne down.

But a PSP + Smartphone = Freaking awesome, to me. :D

Now, that is not to say that this could not hit the ground as a failure of sorts.

Sony already has a whole lot of competions regarding smartphones; the obvious three being the HTC Evo, Motorola Droid, and of course the iPhone.

So if they are wanting to be fully successful with this concept, then they definitely have their work cut out for them.

I wonder how much it is going to be.....

Most likely a good amount of investment would go into it if you plan on getting one.

The PSP Go itself is currently running at $199 on its own.

So you can only imagine a PSP Smartphone... and that is not taken into consideration the data plan charges which tend to be fairly expensive with even the cheapest of smartphones out there.

Oh man, I hate when I see things like these that aren't confirmed. Because I REALLY want one! Then later I will find out that it was a rumor.
But this would be really awesome. I'm not that huge of a fan of Android because they don't keep up with updates with all the phones, however PS3 has always been good for updates, even to today. So I think it'd be an awesome device.

Yep, they've definitely got a lot of competition all over, I hope they work out the flaws and have it be worth it. :tmb:

I guess we still don't know which carrier will most likely get it, right? I'm hoping for AT&T obviously. :ton:

Engadget is a very well known tech blog, so I don't they say the prototype picture was a legitimate leaked picture for nothing.
Sony has also been questioned on the case and it seems they are really uptight on not answering anything or giving out details, whereas they could've just said no from the get-go.

But yes, there is that possibility of it either not being in the works at all or being canceled for whatever reason.

I seriously doubt it though.

Yup, they apparently just went ahead and took it out by replacing it with some sort of a thumb touch sensor in replacement to the little analog stick that is in current PSPs.

I have a hard time believing this'll actually work without the phone being rather large. I mean, I know they can scale down a lot of things these days, but a PSP is still pretty chunky, and a PSP Smartphone is going to need even more in it than a regular PSP. Since the PSP is more capable than the PS1, and a little less capable than the PS2... And people are having a bit of a hard time creating PSP emulators for phones (although the one for the N900 is coming along, albeit very slowly in every sense). Now I know that an emulated environment requires more processing power etc. to run than the actual environment... but still. It seems a bit unlikely that they'll do this, and have it remain as portable as the PSP is currently. Especially since the PSP is very old now. I mean, really, they should be thinking about an entirely new handheld. :p

The inclusion of the "dual analouge sticks" (if we can call them that) means that this is more of a psp 2, meaning new games etc. And it will sell really well, but if it is in effect the psp2, will they make a phone-less version?

I think that this is their only shot at keeping the PSP relevant. If this fails (I wouldn’t find that unlikely), then Sony’s only real option would be to start over and invent something new for their next-generation handheld console.

Actually, they should have done that a long time ago. That touch was a better idea than only buttons, or at least a useful addition, should have been clear at the very least since the introduction of the Nintendo DS. DS and iPhone have shown clearly that what people want in mobile is not a scaled-down version of a large entertainment system, no matter how cool it is that Sony managed to produce that. As long as Sony does not acknowledge that, and let’s face it, this prototype does not look anything as if they got the message, Sony won’t come to the top of the mobile games market.

And it's a port of a game I already had.

Wow...what ever happened to practical phones? I'm afraid of anything happening to my phone, if it breaks I'll have to start using my touchscreen. God, that would suck. I hope these children's toys don't completely kill off normal phones.

I agree, but I think the only way they'll ever kill the normal phones is if they ever become just as cheap (which I doubt).

It looks like it's something cooked from Sony Ericsson with only a PlayStation brand on top. Like they have too much PSP Go parts and need to get rid of them, OR SOMETHING.

Well, the only thing that interested me was the ability to have a phone and a portable handheld gaming device all in one. My iPhone is capable of having several thousands of applications that people so talk about and sure I can see how many of those apps can be beneficial to some people, but to be honest I only use like 5 different apps which mostly dwell in the social networking category.

Yes, there are games on the iPhones, Droids, Evos, but none can really handle higher end PSP type games, unless you jailbreak it which then you can play some PS1 games and NES games, but most of them run super slow anyways.

that looks cool. but you need a SIM card, so you would have to go with either AT&T or that crappy network T-Mobile.

My iPhone is jailbroken and unlocked. I use it with T-Mobile. I was under contract with AT&T and was super glad when I got out of contract.
I switched to T-Mobile and was super skeptical of it at first, but I have way more reception at my area than I did with AT&T.
And even when I travel, there are less dropped calls. So I guess it all depends on where you are. :)

Anyways, when it comes down to it, I enjoy practicality and convenience. That being said, I don't reject the idea of my next phone also being being able to handle my portable games.

shame on YOU! you got your phone flashed! :p

i worked at a Cell Phone shop for 15 months,(but t was close to 4 years ago). anyways, T-Mobile was infamous for being the service that ppl complained about adn came into to get a new phone and provider. perhaps its only in Arizona )and Utah, i had relatives who had bad times with it), but T-Mobile has been nothing short of bad.

anyways, maybe Sony will go to AT&T, considering they are rather popular these days.
