Citarum River

Citarum (Sundanese: Walungan Citarum) is a river in West Java, Indonesia. It has an important role in the life of the people of West Java, as it is used to support agriculture, water supply, industry, sewerage, etc. The river is heavily polluted by human activity; about five million people live in the basin of the river.
In December 5, 2008, the Asian Development Bank approved a $500 million loan for cleaning up the river, calling it the world's dirtiest.

It's really hard to believe the conditions some people live in...

Oh My God, you can say that, it is really shocking, not to say more. This pics have just left me almost speechless. If you have only showed one photo I really wouldn't believe that this is actually a river. It's very hard to see the extreme that the world has reached. We don't deserve what Nature gave to us.

Some of us don't -- I've been brought up in an area where we respect nature, and all that we take from it we give back. Where I live has been voted as one of the most tranquil places in Britain -- and compared to this...
Seeing this is so sad :( Its truly heartbreaking.

That's insane. I just looks like a flood washed away a garbage dump and it fills the streets.

how did this even happen? not put the blame on the citizens, but not to deter the idea, but there had to be a moment where they realized that this river was not a place to be dumping trash in.

assuming that that's how it happened.

OMG thatīs disgusting! :yik:
They should just work together and clean this mess up. After they deal with the destruction of yet another natural disaster of course, which is really sad by the way.

You also can go to the Java island and visit some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
What a contradiction!

If only more places had areas like this one you mentioned.. When I said "we" I was referring to the Humankind in general, but, of course, there are exceptions, like the ones that created that area. I am lucky that my city is the one with more green places in my country, which is a great thing imo. But it's really great that your city is one of the most tranquil places, I really think more cities have to join the model of the place where you live. :(
It's sad and heartbreaking indeed, but it gets worse when we think that our children will raise in a world like this, if Earth last that long. :o

I definately share your thoughts :tmb: I'm really passionate about where I live, and many of the people who live here are too. Its not a city though, its a village built on archaeological ground. I think its down to education as well -- people should be taught how to preserve the earth and stop horrendous amounts of pollution, like what we see here.

And you have plenty of reasons to be proud of your village and their inhabitants. It's a model to follow indeed! :tmb: Of course it depends on education, either. There are some countries where, as we know, the lack of human behavior towards Nature is evident, and it leads to this kind of pictures. If, even with education, people keep acting thinking that the environment protection it's not of their business, just think in countries where that same education isn't inculcated. :(

I remember something about this awhile back where they were saying "it's so polluted you could practically stand on it".

It's probly their trash lake, their nationally designated trash dumping area, cause there is no place else to dump it.
