View Full Version : Why cant humans control hair movement?

Lee croft
22-11-10, 00:39
In more detail I mean why cant we actually move it like we can move our hands and feet etc

I tired Google but I keep getting unrelated stuff.

Paddy
22-11-10, 00:41
Our hands and feet have muscles and nerves connected to the brain that control movement :p
Hair isnt.

Forwen
22-11-10, 00:43
Yeah, hair has no muscles to be moved with or nerves to communicate your intention to move it.

Well, what on earth would moving our hair do for us?
Similar to nails, hair is only dead cells. We have it in order to help us reduce the loss of body heat.

Tbh, this question is qualified for Yahoo answers.

I tried looking it up on yahoo answers I didnt get anything :p...I'm not prepared to make an account there or what ever just for this one question :p

Lol, this thread is hilarious.

You whip your hair back and forth.

scremanie
22-11-10, 00:52
lol.... I did /facepalm. Sorry. :D

It's because our hair has no muscle tissue or nerves. If it did... it would hurt like crap when we cut it. It would be like cutting off a finger...

Also, it's not just humans.. it's pretty much everything with hair.

xcrushterx
22-11-10, 00:54
Why?
It's a daft question.

Phlip
22-11-10, 00:56
Hair is only there to keep you warm. There's no other use for it - if it had nerve cells you'd be in pain a lot.

Because your hair doesn't have nerves and muscles, if they did, and we lose plenty of hairs a day, like Philip said, we'd be in a lot of pain :p

You would need neuron connections. You COULD get robotic hair implats that look like tentacles. :D
Link em up to the brain's neuron network and create new connections.

I know hair doesnt have muscles :p but I always curoius as to why we cant because it comes from the inside of our heads so whats stoping us? But I hink it was the nerves thing that I wanted to know :p...not everyone comes from a well educateded(sp?)(:p) background..I loved science when I was younger and they never answered this question :jmp: I know hair hair is dead :p...I should have linked that to the nerves but didnt think LMAO

Paddy
22-11-10, 12:52
Everyone would have long hair if they had nerves, it would be a huge agony to get a haircut as numerous people said lol

22-11-10, 13:02
Yeah, hair has no muscles to be moved with or nerves to communicate your intention to move it.
This is (partly) incorrect. How do you explain goosebumps? ;)

I donīt remember if this applies to every hair on your body, but they are connected to the nervous system and have muscles, but you donīt have voluntary control over them. They contract (the tiny muscles), when you are cold or afraid etc, controlled by the autonomic nervous system. This doesnīt serve a purpose anymore (but it probably did a long time ago, to keep you warm or to intimidate other creatures like a cat does).

I thought by hair it was implied the hair on ones head :p least thats what I thought the OP meant :o

Love2Raid

So? The point is that hair do have muscles and nerves connected to them (the hair on your head as well I think, not sure), I wouldnīt want people to be misinformed.

If goosebumps arenīt the effect you were looking for, try headbanging or a simple fan. :D

Tbh I learnt something new today :p genuinelly didnt know that. I know of goosebumps but not the specifics of how theyre formed till now.
I couldnt give a flying **** if people think Im stupid if I didnt know that originally, I dont care what people think.

In some areas you can move the skin under the hair - People can to this with their tops of the heads (this is how people can get their ears to move).

^ surely you were taught that you need bones to move? The muscles need a bone to operate on, otherwise nothing can move.

Your hairs can move by piloerection, which happens when you get goosebumps, as Love2Raid said. ;) But any hair longer than a few mm would be too floppy to move at all. You need bone or at least solid material like cartillage to be able to move anything, regardless of whether there are muscles or not.
As for being able to control it fully like an arm, you'd need conscious control, bones, muscle and nerves, which is impossible as hair is just fibres, not living cells, not to mention, getting a haircut would be a painful mess. :p

22-11-10, 17:01
Do you mean actually moving your hair so it would look like snakes or something or just the muscles under the skin? I think the only part of you body where you can't get goosebumps eventhough there are hair are your eyelashes. If you are cold or something you can actually feel your hair on your head moving. But it seems like most people here who thought you were stupid are the ones who actually are stupid :p

Lee croft
22-11-10, 17:01

I only thought that certain parts (most parts) of the human body needed bones to move.

Well it's the same everywhere. If you take a really long piece of string, and just move the end gently then it won't make the whole length move because it's too long and slack.
