View Full Version : Money doesn't grow on trees...

... But if Mercedes manages to get a practical application to the Biome car concept, you can plant seeds and grow your own automobile ;).

The concept was first introduced at the L.A. autoshow this month.

Dream new Mercedes-Benz Biome - the car at one with nature.

The Biome, they say, will be grown in a "completely organic environment" from seeds sown in a nursery; a Mercedes-Benz nursery. Out on the road the car will emit not a cocktail of noxious gases, but pure oxygen. And at the end of its life-span it won’t be dragged off to the local dump to be dismantled in a pool of oil - it will be composted. Or used as building material.

“We wanted to illustrate the vision of the perfect vehicle of the future,” said Hubert Lee, head of the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studios in Carlsbad. “The Biome is a natural technology hybrid and forms part of our earth’s ecosystem. It grows and thrives like the leaves on a tree.”

Money doesn't grows? :pi: But you know whatever.

I'mma go water my car, I guess.

This sounds interesting, not to say that I really like the car design. :tmb:

Itd be nice if some explanation as to how that thing can grow was provided. :p

I forgot to add in the link to the source of the article. Its been added in now. Sorry about that. Essentially, the car will be made out of a material called "bio-fibre."

I love futuristic stuff, but that is one ugly car. Love the idea, though. Sounds pretty practical to just grow your own vehicle. Maybe they can start with something more simple like a bike.

This is the coolest thing I've heard about in a long time! Bio-engineering is the future, for sure.

I've heard of a car made mostly from vegetable matter, so why not actually grow the thing entirely? Interesting.

Very great idea, but the car looks terribly awful and Ugly.

Well I kinda see this concept as a RPG game character creation feature :p. I am going to assume that bio-fibre will be quite cheap (a fairly huge assumption I know but I am doing this for argument's sake.) If that is the case, then your average joe can ask the automobile manufacturer to have the design tailored to his/her wants and needs.

Definitely. Me needs to buy stocks... Pronto :whi:.

That is absolutely disgusting. The idea is a good one, I guess, but that driving through the countryside? You'd be an utter laughing stock -- and I'd be one of the ones laughing ;)

I love these concept cars, they look so alien.

So, what would be the deal with parts replacement? If the car strictly looked like how it does in that pic, the first bump in the road you come across you're gonna smash the bumper & grille to bits.

I'll bet it would be very strong. Just ask yourself: when a car hits a tree which one wins?

Clearly not the car.
But I'm not debating the strength of the bodywork, it's where replacements would come from.

We’ve seen some weird and wonderful concept cars at Telegraph Motoring, but this one takes the cannabis flapjack.
The trip deepens: the interior of the Biome will grow from DNA contained in the Mercedes star on the front of the vehicle, while the exterior grows from the star on the rear. To accommodate specific customer requirements, the MB star will be genetically engineered, allowing the vehicle to grow accordingly.

Biome will grow from DNA contained in the Mercedes star???

This seems megalomaniac mercedes

I want my Capsule Corporation!!!!!!:ton:

EDIT: The thread title looked very interesting. :o

Hence why I said in my first post that it would be cool IF Mercedes can come up with a PRACTICAL application for the concept :p. I can't tell you the details about bio-fibre because I don't know much about its overall durability. But I do want to make an investment in this to see where this goes.

It's definitely a step in some kind of right direction, I can't argue that. I guess I'm just a stickler for details :o

Wish it was a biological Veyron or Super Sport though :p

Nice thought experiment, sure, but this only becomes truly interesting once it goes from "something we thought would be cool" to "something we are actively researching". As it is, this is about as relevant to what well be driving in the future as the 1950s ideas of cars with nuclear reactors.

I hate cars like that (the design). :pi: It looks like some orthopedic.. Thing. Bleh.

Pure oxygen, that's very nice though. Maybe in the future all cars will be like this (I just HOPE they won't look like this one). :D

Quite cool!

I just wonder how long that life-span is (wasn't mentioned) and if the material is strong enough to ensure the safety of the driver/passengers (I assume it is :p).

I cannot fathom that a seed would grow into a car, so I'm assuming that the idea is to grow the raw materials from seeds and then manufacture it into a car. As such, I guess they could make replacements out of the same material without too much trouble.

Hope that this is the future :)

There are so many problems to overcome though. The cost of the car could be astronomical too.

Sorry? Why? Lol! Its not like you are trying to shoot down a point I made or something Tampi :p. And I know about the 612 concept and I can bring in even more examples of beautiful concepts that many high end manufacturers are working upon right now. But that's besides the point of the topic of this thread :).

That's exactly what they are proposing and the car itself will run on photosynthesis derived source of energy. But again, its just a concept for the time being.

Where do you read that? On photosynthesis.

When I read the article I thought it was a fancy kind of hallucination.
Very beginning to read that on cannabis.

Well, yesterday I saw a science program where they used, i don't know what animal neurons (rat or I don't know) to move small strollers.

I can not imagine what things will be doing out there.

If the world is an extrapolation of this forum, perhaps YES they have those seeds :vlol:

Taken from the article link I pasted in the opening post:

It will, he says, be made from "BioFibre" and weigh just 875lbs (397kg). BioFibre, you see, will be grown from proprietary DNA in the MB nursery, where it will collect energy from the sun and store it in a liquid chemical bond called BioNectar4534

It said they grow the stuff, not cut trees down to get it. And the car then gets energy from photosynthesis, if I read it right.
