In a recent interview given to Gamespy, Valve's Doug Lombardi revealed that in order to play Half-Life 2 at all (either single-player or multiplayer), you'll need to create a Steam account and authenticate your copy.

Doug Lombardi: During installation the user will be prompted to authenticate the copy and create a Steam account. After that is complete, the single-player and LAN games do not require an Internet connection.

This might cause additional problems for the warez monkeys, especially if Valve sets things up so that the authentication will actually download a few key files required to play the game onto your PC. I bet the whole of Pakistani gaming scene is sweating bullets right now.

Until the game releases, I really don't know the answer.

But I reckon that they will have put something in there to stop you playing a LAN game if both the software IDs are the same. But there are normally ways around these things. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/mischievous.gif ;)
