Ok, here's the deal:

I voted for someone last night who had 1 vote, with a 1 rating.

I gave that person a 5 rating.

Their profile now shows 2 votes, with a 2 rating.

Doesn't logic dictate that 1 + 5 / 2 = 3

Huh???

Yeah I know. I've seen some people who have a 5, I'll give them another 5, and then their rating drops to a 4.

Yeah I don't get it either. By all logic, it should be a 3.

The mean of 1 and 5 is 3 after all.

Explain, please.

Yeah, whats with this rating thing?

I only have a 2... everyone else has 4 or 5....

I guess I am not popular...I am so crushed http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/bash.gif

Nerdalicious dont worry about it. Its a stupid popularity contest that hurts peoples feelings. Make yourself unrateable if it bothers you. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

*lol* I am not worried about it, after all I have only been here less than a week and like I would really be bothered by the fact that a few people in an online community rate me a 1 http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-4.gif

I have been a 4 for a long time, and with 57 voters, I have no chance at it changing. So meh.

After the first 10 it kinda gets hard to change.

If it were an actual number, like a %, it might mean something.

what is the highest?

I am curious as to why a ratings system, I visit many forums and never heard of such a thing  I mean there were people that did not like each other, get along, etc...but never "rate" anyone?

As AE mentions above, a member can elect to disable their ratings which not only prevents them being rated, but prevents them from rating another. The rating system was never intended to be indicative of a member's worth.

I don't understand the point of it either. I disagree with it so I turned it off. I don't think it's a good way to show a members character. That's what posting is for.
edit: Though the software probably came with it.

Yes, the software did. This topic has been mentioned numerous times here, and I do see your point.

Its relatively harmless. Some people enjoy the rating system and some are bothered by it. There are options for both parties.
