Hi Everyone,

http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

Look at this link!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/Education/higher/research/story/0,9865,1068471,00.html

Three question:-

a) Are there aliens out there?

b) Do they look like THAT!?

c) If we met intellegent life - would we recognise it?

Hello John! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/hug.gif

How are you?

Geck-o-Lizard

My answer to c) would be that no, we wouldn't recognise intelligent life because we, as humans, believe that we are the highest in the intelligence scale and so would overlook other intelligences in our blatantly bigheaded nature

Of course, not all of us are like that, and I reckon that this forum's just about scooped up all the non-conformers http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

A classic quote from Calvin & Hobbes:

"The most convincing evidence that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that they haven't tried to contact us."

Hehe, yeah, very true too http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

The THEORY is that I face intelligent life every time I stand before my college students. The jury is still out on this subject...Maybe it will take us a super-long time to recognize intelligent life? Maybe will entail redefining "intelligent" ?

About my students--I'm only joking!

Extraterrestrials do in fact exist...

Some look like humans, most don't...

PS: Earth is a colony...

Aza</font>
First, you have to believe in dragons...</font>
If Dragons are aliens then I am a believer already, I just don't know the history...</font>
Mars was targeted for colonization many millions of years ago by a research vessel...

After Mars started to go 'stale', the population decided to transplant the populace to Earth (which was in the Mesozoic (spelt wrong im sure) Era...

Unfortunately all attempts to domesticate and/or control the dangerous creatures native to Earth failed which lead to a decline of technology as survival became more important...

The role the Dragons play in this is that they responded to a distress call from Earth, but by the time they arrived, there was no 'civilised' humans left...

They remained until it became too dangerous and left...

But, they also left behind certain Watchers to monitor progress and call them back when humans again master themselves...

It has not happened yet, in the proportions necessary though...

When technology in the recent history (as in last 15 thousand years) advanced enough, some ETs began to actively observe the human population...

Some were like SciFi would have you believe, and some were just like the humans they studied...

It was only recently when the Watchers made contact with the alien scientists that this history was hypothesized...

Unfortunately the original government body that ordered the colonization of Mars has since been replaced and all records have been presumed lost...

Such is bureacracy..

My inferences, based on observations:

a) No there are no aliens. There are other life forms out there, but until they visit us, they're not aliens. The closest life forms are on Europa.
b) Yes, there are other species that look very much like that, but we will never meet them.
c) Absolutely yes - we are very good at recognizing even non-carbon-based life. The manifestations: metabolism, growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli or adaptation to the environment.

I was actually thinking about turning it into novel form, but then thought that might discredit the story...

Of course,

Once 'they' get their green cards, or alternatively learn and understand the Laws of Cricket, they can no longer be considered aliens!

aliens do exist-they have to!, somewhere, they may not be lifeforms like us, they are probably not intelligent, so finding them will be damn hard!
If you ask me i dont even think its got they've got that far in evolution, the may be microscopic, or just vegetation, but its still alien life!

gonga
22-10-03, 23:07
Let's not forget, it would be far more important if we could finally discover intelligent life on Earth.

Genocide
22-10-03, 23:10
lol, intelligent life on earth...what a concept
it'll never catch on.
im wonderin now-i we were to encounter an alien in outer space, who would be the alien? us or them

Amen to that Gonga!

But again if we met it I have a terrible fear our reaction would be genocidal.

:(

BTW - Ha ve you ever heard of Douglas Adams and 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'?

So you are probably right, no Alien Nation for us...

John Falstaff

Yeah Draco,

Ignorance and hatred can be pretty powerfull!

The reason that I mentioned Douglas Adams was that he pointed out humans were only the third most intellegent species on Earth. Second were the Dolphins, whose last parting message - which we failed to understand - was 'So Long, and thanks for all the fish!'

The most intellegent were/are the mice, for whom the earth was just a complicated computer, designed to come up with the answer to the ultimate question. As Neil notes the answer was '42'.

One of the only problems was that we didn't know what the ultimate question was!

http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/privateeye.gif

Draco
22-10-03, 23:47
Deep Thought answered the question, Earth was sposed to find the question to the answer...

Hitchhiker's Guide - watched some of those episodes on PBS about 15-20 years ago didn't I?

Draco - exactly which planet are YOU from? http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

The question is:

At what age do men peak?

We're only a little past John!

well i don't know if there's intelligent life out there, but to paraphrase from the movie Contact, the universe is so much larger than any of our minds can comprehend. and if there's only life on earth, wouldn't that be an awful waste of space?
also, 'aliens' may not necessarily be the type seen in movies ie bipedal/humaniod. they could be just micro-organisms or more controversially, not even exist in our 'dimension'.
