a screenplay I'm working on for fun and for practise.

EXT. OVER THE HIMALAYAS - NIGHT

A twin-engine Cessna private plane is flying over the Himalayas, the weather turbulent.

INT. CESSNA - NIGHT

Inside, the two pilots, HENRY and ZHANG, keep the plane level.

In the passenger compartment, LADY AMELIA CROFT, a beautiful, distinguised lady (mid-50s), her hair streaked with a little white and done up, with an ornate hairpin, sits with her daugher, LARA CROFT (age 8) on her lap. A slightly older girl, JACQUELINE EVERT sits on the facing seat, her seatbelt fastened and drinking hot chocolate. They're all enjoying the ride.

LARA CROFT:

Mother, that's a beautiful hairpin.

AMELIA CROFT:

Why my dear, you haven't stopped talking about it since we left England. Come to think of it, neither has Jacqueline.

JACQUELINE EVERT:

It is nice, Lady Croft.

AMELIA CROFT:

Oh, Aunty Amelia will do.

JACQUELINE EVERT:

It's nice, Aunty Amelia.

Lara giggles.

LARA CROFT:

I would love to take a closer look at it...

Amelia chuckles.

AMELIA CROFT:

How about I let you hold it?

LARA CROFT:

Why, mother! Really?!

AMELIA CROFT:

Yes, Lara.

JACQUELINE EVERT:

Yippie!

She removes the hairpin, handing it to Lara. She stares at it, mesmerized.

AMELIA CROFT:

Your father gave it to me.

LARA CROFT:

How nice of daddy!

AMELIA CROFT:

Yes, he was -

Suddenly, Jacqueline's eyes flash a dangerous fluorescent yellow for a split second. She seems to have gone into a trance, though she snaps back out. The hairpin corresponds by also glowing yellow - Laram alarmed, drops the pin.

BRRIISSSS! The sound of metal tearing, the floor of the plane giving way all of a sudden.

HENRY:

Mayday Mayday, this is Tango Omega 22-9er, requesting permission for an emergency landing -

Lara, Amelia and Jacqueline are all startled. The plane lurches to one side as Lara tumbles off her seat, hitting the floor.

AMELIA:

Lara!

LARA:

Are we going to crash, mother?

JACQUELINE:

No! We can't crash!

AMELIA:

Not unless we really have to.

All of a sudden, luggage tumbles out of the unsecured overhead storage compartments, flying through the cabin. One hits Zhang in the head, knocking him out. Henry struggles to steady the plane on his own.

AMELIA:

Close your eyes, Lara!

LARA:

I don't want to, mother.

Black. And we are -

Part 2 to follow but only if you want it! Thanks for reading.

EXT. VILLAGE -- NIGHT

TEXT: England, 512 A.D.

A horde of soldiers clad in full chainmail armour and riding on horseback besiege a small village, as the citizens of the village flee for their lives. At the head of the horde is KING ARTHUR.

ARTHUR:

Get out! Run away now, it is not you we are after!

The townsfolk run helter-skelter, screaming in panic. Arthur's soldiers shoot flaming arrows from longbows, setting the thatched buildings on fire.

ARTHUR:

Lancelot! Clear the way.

LANCELOT:

Yes, my liege.

Lancelot's horse rears up, approaching a large door on the biggest building in the town. He shoots another flaming arrow, as the door is set on fire. The door begins to burn.

INT. LORD'S HOUSE

A tyrannical Lord, MORDERUS is reclining, a beautiful woman, GILDA, nervously serving him a goblet of wine. Morderus hears the commotion, pushes the woman to the floor, and goes downstairs to see King Arthur standing in the courtyard.

ARTHUR:

Lord Morderus, let the woman go.

MORDERUS:

My king! You of all people should know not to trespass on private property.

LANCELOT:

Just let her go, Morderus.

MORDERUS:

What shall you do to me if I don't?

ARTHUR:

This!

Arthur draws his sword from a scabbard - no ordinary longsword, but rahter an ornate, mystical weapon - THE TIP LOOKING TO BE EXACTLY THE SAME AS AMELIA CROFT'S HAIRPIN.

Morderus follows immediately by drawing his own sword - more traditional and imposing, the blade gleaming from the firelight.

MORDERUS:

The fabled Excalibur. What an honour.

The woman runs downstairs.

GILDA:

My Lord, what has...

Gilda gasps as she sees King Arthur and the knights surrounding Morderus. In a flash, Morderus grabs Gilda, holding his sword to her throat.

MORDERUS:

Come one step closer, and there will be more blood on your hands, your majesty.

GILDA:

No! Please...

Arthur pauses for a second, and draws his sword, pointing it squarely at Morderus' forehead. Morderus continues to taunt Arthur with a sneer.

All of a sudden, a bolt of glowing green energy leaps from the sword, hitting Morderus in the head as he is blown violenty backwards, Gilda taken aback. Before we see the aftermath, we are -

EXT. ABOVE THE OCEAN -- DAY

TEXT: SINGAPORE, PRESENT DAY.

A helicopter flies over the ocean, approaching Singapore’s
Keppel Bay - the skyscrapers looming behind cranes and
stacks of metal containers.

EXT. FU QI SHIP’S DECK -- DAY

The helicopter approaches a research ship, as it begins its
descent and touches down gently on the helipad at the back
of the research ship, several crewman standing by for the
landing.

A crewman runs up to the helicopter and opens the door.

Out walks a beautiful woman, dressed in a flightsuit and a
helmet. She removes the helmet to reveal a braided ponytail.
This is LARA CROFT.

LARA:
Hello everyone.

The ship’s captain, CHANG, greets her.

CHANG:
Lady Lara Croft, welcome onboard
the Fu Qi.

LARA:
Thank you captain. It sure is hot
today, isn’t it?

Lara begins to unzip her flight suit, a form-fitting black
tank top underneath. Chang is stunned, and so is everyone
else on the deck.

CHANG:
Uh...Lady Croft...I’ll show you to
your...cabin.

LARA:
That would be excellent, Captain. I
could do with a nice cold shower
now.

CHANG:
You’ll be sharing
your...cabin...with

Lara smiles knowingly.

LARA:
I think I know with whom.

I'm having a lot of fun writing this, and am up to page 25. This is turning into a loose adaptation of Tomb Raider Legend. After Singapore, Lara moves on to Japan, and then to Nepal. The Japan bit is almost a word-for-word transcript of the level, I haven't had to rework it too much.
---

INT. SHIP’S CABIN -- DAY

Lara walks into the cabin, with double-decker bunks. On the
bottom bunk a man lies asleep, his hair unruly and with a
few day’s worth of stubble. He is snoring, and Lara can’t
help but smile. This is ALISTER TRENT, Lara’s good friend
and advisor, an expert on unorthodox archaeology. His nose
is buried in a laptop, several thick volumes strewn across
his bunk. "THE TRUTH BEHIND LOCH NESS", "THE ALIENS WHO
BUILT STONEHENGE", "LOST GOLD OF QIN SHIH HUANG" and the
like. He is mumbling to himself.

ALISTER:
Iceland...I’ll show them it’s
Iceland...it’s just one rune off, I
swear I...

She takes several steps closer, playfully approaching him.
Alister is startled and falls backwards, his laptop crashing
onto the floor of the cabin.

ALISTER:
Ahh!!

LARA:
Alister! It’s only me.

ALISTER:
Ah...okay...Lady Lara Croft.

LARA:
Almost-doctor Alister Trent.

ALISTER:
The windbags at Cambridge....

Lara smiles, as she casually puts her stuff down, continuing
to pull off her flight suit, revealing her signature get-up
of a black tank top and shorts - sexy, but very practical.
Alister can’t look away.

ALISTER:
Ah...uh...

LARA:
Ah uh what?

ALISTER:
What are we here for? What’s the,
um, grand prize?

Lara rolls her eyes.

LARA:
You mean Zip didn’t tell you?

ALISTER:
No, he’s too busy - always either
cooking, stalking his ex-girlfriend
on the internet, cooking, or
installing webcams in your bedroom.

LARA:
he...what?

ALISTER:
Nevermind.

LARA:
We’re here for this.

Lara takes out a tablet computer and turns it on. The image
is a scan from an old history book, the illustration showing
sailors on a boat throwing a crown into the water to satiate
a hungry, lion-like aquatic beast.

ALISTER:
Sang Nila Utama.

LARA:
Also known as Sri Tri Buana,
correct.

ALISTER:
And we’re here for the crown?

LARA:
Yes...and no.

ALISTER:
I don’t quite follow, it was the
crown that he threw into the ocean

LARA:
To lure the beast to the surface.
Then, he mortally wounded it, thus
granting him safe passage to
Temasek - now known as Singapore.

ALISTER:
We’re looking for some kind of
spear, a knife?

LARA:
A kris. An ornamental dagger,
curved blade, sometimes forged from
meteoric rock. Something like this.

Alister listens intently. Lara opens her backpack and takes
out something wrapped in bubble wrap. It is a kris, the hilt
inscribed delicately with beautiful glyphs and symbols - its
beauty contrasting with the potential ugliness wrought by
the vicious curving blade.

ALISTER:
That looks...painful.
Lara tosses the kris, her skill with the weapon unmatched.
She catches it inches away from Alister’s face. Alister
winces. Lara smirks.

INT. SAME -- NIGHT, LATER

Alister is snoring loudly on the lower bunk, as Lara sits on
the top bunk, in a sports bra and looking intently at the
monitor of her laptop. It displays a map of an underground
cavern system. Lara zooms in on several pockets in the cave,
of varying sizes. She sits and thinks to herself. Then, she
gets up and climbs the ladder down to the floor.

She shakes Alister violently.

LARA:
Alister, Alister, wake up!

Alister opens his eyes, sheepish and "sleepish". Her chest
is just several inches from his face.

ALISTER:
Lara...uh...wow.

Lara draws her pistol, cocking and arming it in one move.

ALISTER:
Is this because I was snoring?

LARA:
Yes you were snoring, no it’s not
because of that.

ALISTER:
Then...

LARA:
I’m doing the dive now.

ALISTER:
But it’s...it’s...what time...

LARA:
4.36. in the morning.

ALISTER:
How about the team? The crew? You
can’t dive on your own.

Lara rolls her eyes.

LARA:
I once killed a Tyrannosaurus rex
with these exact same two pistols.
I think I can handle myself.

ALISTER:
Oh-kay.

EXT. FU QI SHIP’S DECK -- NIGHT
Lara is suiting up, zipping her wetsuit up as Alisters some
distance back, watching her. As she conducts checks on her
dive equipment, she glances behind at him.

LARA:
Alister, how do I look?

ALISTER:
Um ah...

LARA:
It was a rhetorical question, dear.

ALISTER:
Um, ah, of course.

LARA:
Alright, camera and microphone
test.

Lara puts an acrylic rebreather mask over her face, and
adjusts a small camera attached to it. Alister turns on a
screen and gets the feed, the image of him standing on the
deck.

LARA:
Hello, handsome.

ALISTER:
Hello to you right back.

LARA:
That was rhetorical too.
Lara finishes up the preparations, gives Alister the okay
sign, followed by the "dive" sign, which is a thumbs down.

ALISTER:
"Okay", and then "no"?

LARA:
The thumbs down is diving sign
language for "going down".

ALISTER:
Oh...I knew that.

Lara backflips off the deck.

ALISTER:
That woman is like some kind of
wild cat...so gorgeous yet so
scary.

EXT. SOUTH CHINA SEA - NIGHT

The water is murky, nothing in sight. Lara switches on her xenon torch - the beam slicing through the brackish sea.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

Wow.

LARA:

But there's nothing to see.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

I've never been diving before.

LARA:

Yes, once, but the waterpark shouldn't have to count. Poor Zip, having to give you the kiss of life.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

That was three years ago!

LARA:

Old wounds that never heal.

Lara continues to dive, consulting a 3D map on a tablet computer attached to her wetsuit, on her wrist. She taps at the screen, as it shows where she is relative to the destination. The blips and buzzes sound absolutely clear underwater.

She heads towards what looks like a large rock.

LARA:

Here we are.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

It's a rock.

LARA:

That's not hard to place.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

How you going to get it open?

Lara smiles behind her acrylic mask, and produces the kris. She puts it into what looks like a keyhole. The rock slides aside, opening a hidden passage.

ALISTER:

Far out!

LARA:

No, straight in.

EXT. ROCK PASSAGE - NIGHT

Lara swims in.

INT. SHIP'S CABIN -- NIGHT

Alister watches intently, as a jellyfish floats past onscreen. Then another, and another - these larger.

ALISTER:

Lara, look out!

EXT. ROCK PASSAGE - NIGHT

LARA:

It's alright, Alister - I'm insulated. Here, I'll show you.

She reaches out to touch one of the tentacles. Nothing for a second.

LARA:

See?

ALISTER:

(over headset)

Ah, alright then, how about we just...

All of a sudden, a small bioelectric arc jumps across the tentacles. Lara is taken aback.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

What did I tell you?

LARA:

That's not supposed to happen.

Silence as she continues through. A small opening visible above, as Lara kicks upwards, heading right for it.

INT. YUWEISHI CAVE -- NIGHT

Lara surfaces, finding herself in a large cave. She takes a glow stick and cracks it, illuminating the cave; its vastness beautiful and overwhelming. Lara ignites a flare, lighting the cave further.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

That really is something.

LARA:

It sure is.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

Why hasn't anyone found this already?

Lara steps forwards - a crushing sound. She looks down to see a human skull beneath her feet.

LARA:

Some obviously have.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

Oouuurrgghhh....

LARA:

If you don't want to watch, you can always cut your own feed.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

No...it's just that I'm glad it's not me stepping on skulls.

LARA:

What could have done all this?

ALISTER:

(over headset)

The Yuweishi. The fish-lion monster that almost sank Utama's boat.

LARA:

You mean a...merlion?

ALISTER:

(over headset)

In a sense, yes.

LARA:

But not the touristy thing, blowing chunks into the river.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

In a sense, no.

LARA:

If it's anything like that, I have nothing to be afraid of.

INT. SHIP'S CABIN -- NIGHT

Alister is seated and watching the feed on his laptop. Suddenly, there's a knock at the door.

ALISTER:

Hold on Lara, someone at the door.

Alister opens the door, and is greeted by Chang, his face pale white.

CHANG:

Alister? Where's Lara?

ALISTER:

On a dive.

CHANG:

She has to come back now -

ALISTER:

I know, she's not supposed to dive on her -

CHANG:

No - she's going down there, to the cave.

ALISTER:

How do you know?

CHANG:

We went first. Two days ago.

ALISTER:

And the guys who went?

INT. YUWEISHI CAVE -- NIGHT

Lara approaches the center of the chamber - Utama's crown and kris on a pedestal, glowing ethereally - and more bodies surrounding the pedestal. One body's hand is outstretched - reaching for the crown his last act. The body is dressed in a dive suit. Lara goes close and inspects it.

The wetsuit has an expedition patch and the patch of a Singapore flag on it.

LARA:

This was one of our guys.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

Yeah, I was going to tell you -

A roar - bellowing, loud, shrill yet deep at the same time.

LARA:

Merlion.

A creature slowly walks out of the darkness of the cavern - an imposing, horrific yet elegant beast, a large panther/shark with a mane, four muscular legs, but with the tail of a fish.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

That...that....that's...the...the...

Lara walks backwards slowly, reaching for twin pistols in their holsters. She slowly draws them, loading them - water-resistant, high-tech pistols.

LARA:

Lead may taste better than me - give it a try, fishlion.

Lara fires repeatedly at the creature. It is surprisingly agile, fast on its four feet and using its fish-like tail for balance. It roars - a loud, frightening roar. She continues to fire - the bullets merely clipping its mangy fur.

The merlion pounces on Lara, it's paw pressed tightly on her throat as she fights it back. The beast roars in her face, saliva hanging from its fangs. Lara fires three shots at once. The creature's eyes widen as it freezes, dead. Lara heaves and pushes the dead beast over onto its side.

Lara stands up, wipes her brow and surveys her victim.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

You killed the merlion!

Roaring and snarling, three more merlions looking much like the first one stalk out of the darkness of the cavern, all with their eyes fixed on Lara.

LARA:

Maybe not the merlion...

Lara bolts straight for the crown and kris on the pedestal. However, one of the merlions pounces and grabs her lower body. She fights it off, firing several shots that miss, but startle the creature. Lara grabs the crown and the kris.

LARA:

Gotcha.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

Fantastic!

LARA:

Show's not over.

Lara waves the kris, all of a sudden a great yellow bolt of pure energy is emitted. It tears one of the merlions apart.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

Did you see that?

LARA:

Yes, I most certainly did.

The kris continues to fire off the energy bolts, hitting the stalactites hanging from the cavern ceiling. They begin to crumble and fall to the cavern floor below.

Lara dives in the water with her prizes.

EXT. ROCK PASSAGE -- NIGHT

Lara swims out as fast as she can through the way she came, as the cave crumbles behind her.

EXT. SOUTH CHINA SEA - NIGHT

Lara kicks to the surface, coming up. A large plume of water and plasma energy explodes in the distance just behind her.

ALISTER:

(over headset)

You're good.

Lara takes the kris out of her bag and studies it.

LARA:

No. This, this is good. This...I've seen something like this...so long ago...

She begins to swim back to the ship.

INT. HELICOPTER, OVER SINGAPORE RIVER -- NIGHT

Lara is flying the same helicopter she arrived in, towards Singapore city. Alister looks out the window at the statue of the merlion at the Esplanade bay, spewing water from its mouth.

ALISTER:

Well, they got that much wrong.

LARA:

That, they certainly did.

nick styger
14-05-11, 19:52
Good stuff. Freaked a bit at the merlions.....

Jedd Fletcher
15-05-11, 10:34
Haha, thanks Nick! The merlion is actually a symbol created by the Singapore Tourism board as a tourist mascot.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/81/Singapore_Merlion_BCT.jpg/300px-Singapore_Merlion_BCT.jpg

It's become a bit of a joke in our country as it's really tacky and kitschy, so I wanted to reinvent the merlion as a scary mythical creature that Lara could take on.

As always, appreciate your support.

---

INT. PRIVATE JET -- NIGHT

Lara is reclining in her seat in a spacious and luxurious private jet, as Alister is seated opposite her, intently studying Utama's crown. They have just left Singapore and are in the air. He looks up at her.

ALISTER:

So, where to next?

LARA:

Tokyo.

ALISTER:

Tokyo, as in Japan?

LARA:

No, Tokyo as in Iceland.

Alister shifts in his seat as she chuckles.

LARA:

I think this kris is not the only one of its kind.

ALISTER:

There are more like this?

LARA:

You've heard of the concept of the "monomyth", haven't you?

ALISTER:

(scoffing)

I practically wrote the book on it.

LARA:

Practically.

ALISTER:

The concept that all the legends of the world share a common root. That all cultures of the world were birthed from a monomyth.

LARA:

Exactly. I saw something like this, in Waseda University.

ALISTER:

So we go on campus.

LARA:

No, it's no longer there. It was taken...by Shogo Takamoto.

ALISTER:

The Yakuza boss?

LARA:

Yes. We've met...once.

ALISTER:

Don't play with fire, Lara.

Lara waves her pistol in the air.

LARA:

I play with firearms all the time.

Alister shakes his head, exasperated.

LARA:

I'll have to call in a favour from Toru Nishimura.

ALISTER:

The newspaper publisher?

LARA:

Yes. He owes me a favour from a while back.

EXT. HANEDA AIRPORT -- DAY

Lara's private jet comes in to land at Tokyo's Haneda Airport.

INT. FUKUSHIMA HOLDINGS LOBBY -- NIGHT

Lara Croft, wearing a beautiful slinky black cocktail dress, walks into the lobby. Alister, uncomfortable in a suit and tie, follows her. She walks up to the reception desk and stops to talk to a receptionist.

LARA:

(In Japanese)(bowing)

Good evening.

RECEPTIONIST:

(In Japanese)(bowing)

Good evening.

LARA:

(In Japanese)

I'm here for Nishimura-san's party upstairs. Here's my invitation.

The receptionist looks over the invitation and smiles widely, bowing again.

RECEPTIONIST:

(In Japanese)

Ah, Lady Lara Croft! Yes, here is your lift pass. 62nd floor.

LARA:

(In Japanese)

Thank you very much.

Lara bows and the receptionist bows in return. She motions to Alister to follow suit, and he does.

Lara walks over to the lift, flashing the lift pass. The doors open, and she and Alister walk in.

INT. PRIVATE JET -- NIGHT

Lara is reclining in her seat in a spacious and luxurious private jet, as Alister is seated opposite her, intently studying Utama's crown. They have just left Singapore and are in the air. He looks up at her.

ALISTER:

So, where to next?

Dubai.

ALISTER:

From one baking hot city to another.

LARA:

I think this kris is not the only one of its kind.

ALISTER:

There are more like this?

LARA:

You've heard of the concept of the "monomyth", haven't you?

ALISTER:

You mean the hero who goes on a -

LARA:

No, the other kind of monomyth

ALISTER:

(scoffing)

I practically wrote the book on it.

LARA:

Practically.

ALISTER:

The concept that all the legends of the world share a common root. That all cultures of the world were birthed from a monomyth.

LARA:

That they all share similar features. Every culture has a great flood, for example.

ALISTER:

So what cultural aspect does this represent?

LARA:

The magical sword. Fragarach. Almace. Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi. Thuan Thien. The Taming Sari we just recovered. (Beat) Excalibur.

ALISTER:

Ah yes! Magical swords, my favourite kind of magical..thing.

LARA:

Another one is in Dubai, on exhibition in the Burj Khalifa - the tallest building in the world.

ALISTER:

I'm afraid of heights.

LARA:

We are 11 kilometers in the air.

ALISTER:

But between the ground and me, there's...

LARA:

A metal tube.

ALISTER:

Oh gosh.

Lara chuckles as Alister begins to panic.

ALISTER:

It's not just a metal tube...there's engines...and wings...and...

EXT. BURJ KHALIFA, DUBAI -- DAY

The sunset paints the city of Dubai in a warm, orange glow, sunlight making the spires of the world's tallest building gleam as the sun begins its descent over the horizon.

INT. ATMOSPHERE RESTAURANT, BURJ KHALIFA -- DAY

The floor to ceiling windows allow the setting sun to gently illuminate the classy and luxurious restaurant, situated on the 122nd floor of the Burj Khalifa.

The elevator doors open, and Lara, wearing a beautiful slinky black cocktail dress, emerges. Alister follows behind her.

LARA:

Alister Trent: I give you the tallest restaurant in the world.

ALISTER:

My ears haven't popped yet. (Beat) Ah, there we are.

LARA:

It's lovely, isn't it?

Alister glances over Lara in her dress.

ALISTER:

And so are you, if I may say so.

Why thank you, of course you may.

Thanks Nick, I'm really grateful that you're reading and enjoying the script.

Lara and Alister proceed into the restaurant - at its center, an ornate, emerald-studded sword on display in a glass case, a laser trip-wire device guarding the perimeter, with armed guards as an added deterrent.

A well-groomed Arab man in a tailored suit hovers near the display. Lara waves over to him, and he waves back. Lara approaches him and they smile and greet each other with a kiss on each cheek.

LARA:

Saaed!

SAAED:

Lady Croft! How wonderful of you to attend my little party.

LARA:

How wonderful of you to invite me.

She indicates Alister.

LARA:

(CONT.)

This is Alister Trent.

Saaed approaches Alister as if to kiss him too, he backs away and offers his hand to shake instead. Saaed happily takes and shakes it.

SAAED:

Welcome to Dubai, Mr Trent.

ALISTER:

Delighted, sir.

SAAED:

We're very proud to have on display what has been undoubtedly verified as the Shamshir-e Zomorrodnegar.

LARA:

The Emerald Sword.

SAAED:

Very good, Lara.

LARA:

I am after all more than a mere raider of tombs.

ALISTER:

The Shamshir-e Zomorrodnegar? The Sword of Solomon?

SAAED:

Yes, the one and only.

LARA:

And the stories of its magical powers?

SAAED:

Only stories, I'm afraid. Please, have some hors d'œuvre.

He motions to a passing waiter, who stops for them to help themselves.

ALISTER:

Oh, shrimp! (To waiter) Thank you.

LARA:

Saaed, if you won't mind I'd like to personally inspect the -

Lara's words are cut short by a burst of gunfire. All of a sudden, armed men wearing combat gear and face masks rush into the restaurant. The guests scream and run for the elevators. The waiters soon follow, a frenzy of people cramming themselves into the lifts. The armed men do not stop them.

Lara reaches into her purse and takes out her headset, wearing it. She connects, and on the other end of the line, ZIP answers.

ZIP:

(Over headset)

Lara? Party cut short?

LARA:

Yes. Extraction as soon as possible. I may be taking the...fast way down.

ZIP:

(Over headset)

You got it. Is that gunfire?

LARA:

Yes.

She taps her headset device off.

The armed guards protecting the sword fire at the squad, but are quickly shot and killed. The party-crashers are led by a woman, her face also covered by a mask. She is carrying an assault rifle.

ALISTER:

What in the name of -

LARA:

Alister, stay behind me.

She instinctively reaches for two holsters concealed by her dress. She draws the pistols and fires. The woman ducks and weaves.

MASKED WOMAN:

Lady Lara Croft.

LARA:

Yes, and who might you be?

MASKED WOMAN:

Who I am is not important. What I want is.

She walks purposefully towards the display.

SAAED:

No! I will not let this treasure be taken by thieves! You will sell it on the black market for millions!

MASKED WOMAN:

You are a fool to think you can even begin to comprehend my intentions.

Lara points one pistol straight at the masked woman's head, while keeping the other at the ready.

LARA:

Put down your weapon.

MASKED WOMAN:

Certainly.

She gently places the gun on the floor. All of a sudden, she turns around and blasts an energy bolt at Saaed, throwing him halfway across the restaurant. The bolt came from her hands. Lara is shocked.

ALISTER:

What...what was that?

MASKED WOMAN:

Sorcery. Would you like to try some?

ALISTER:

Uh...ah...

LARA:

No! Stop it this instant!

MASKED WOMAN:

I didn't come here for you, Lara.

A wave of her hand - the glass of the display case shatters, sirens going off. She saunters over and retrieves the sword. She chants an incantation - the sword produces a blast that shatters the floor-to-ceiling windows. The wind howls in from outside.

LARA:

Alister! Go!

Alister runs for the lift, but is pushed backed by the armed men. He weakly returns to Lara's side. The Masked Woman, brandishing the sword, pushes both of them to the edge of the broken windows, the floor several hundreds of feet below them.

The masked woman takes of her mask. She appears to be JACQUELINE EVERT, only now older, her skin bleached almost white and her hair a pale platinum blonde. Lara stares in disbelief.

LARA:

Jackie...Jackie Evert?

JACQUELINE:

Yes...and no.

Her face morphs and her hair grows darker and longer. Her eyes glow with the same yellow gleam from all those years ago, on the plane.

Lara and Alister hang precariously over the edge.

JACQUELINE:

I don't want to kill you Lara. Not yet.

Lara glances over at Alister. His face goes blank. Then, he nods, weakly.

LARA:

Well, Alister and I don't want to stay.

She takes his hand. Using the other, she snatches the sword away from Jacqueline, caught off guard. They jump.

Jacqueline looks over the edge, screaming after Lara for the sword.
