Hey everyone. I think it's about time to show you the "comic-styled-tomb-raider-mural-thing" I've been working on since the very beginning of this year. It's still a work in progress as you can see. I'm almost finished the drawing which will be followed by the painting.
I hope everyone knows the original picture. I have this piece of wall because I wanted to repaint the corridor next to the stairs and I didn't want it to be plain white. I'm also a black-and-white addict :o
It's about 5 square meter. I choose this picure because it fits quite good in there. Isn't it?
The first version was more white so I added some black to it which made it like a comic drawing.
I proceed quite slow, I know, but I had to work so it's a spare-time project and there were weeks when I didn't draw a single line. Also I try to be as accurate as I can be.
So here are some pictures so far:

(it's a tight corridor so I can only take pictures from the side :( )

I've just finished the drawing.
It only took 4 months and 7 pencils :) I hope the painting will be easier and faster.

BTW heres my door, hope you'll like it too. It's not Lara but Tifa is also nice :D

yesterday I tried to set my camera on a tripod. I'm thinking about making a "progress" movie about the painting, about a minute long. So I have to take about 1200-1500 pictures. I've never did this before, so it's an experiment. Also I know it would be more spectacular if the movie was about the picture apearing on the bare wall...
We'll see what comes out of it. :o

After a few pictures and some testing I put up with the idea of the animation. It takes too much time and effort which I don't have these days. Still the result would be crappy.
Again, thanks everyone for the nice comments. :p

I'm done with half of the stone ledge on the bottom.
Sometimes I feel like an ancient codex scrivener from asia or something...
Thin brush, black ink/paint, lot of dipping, painting strange thin lines/curves. :)

Gotta love your patience. I noticed the sheets of paper in the photos. Is that how you mapped out the image grid for the larger scale? If so, it would be cool to see all those pieces stuck together.

yeah. the whole thing was printed out. I draw it in photoshop, over the original picture. then printed about 100 pages :D and hung them on the wall.
but the upper statue was printed later, so the whole thing wasn't there at the same time. And I also modified some parts after I printed out Lara.

by the way here (http://picasaweb.google.com/balazs.gyurka/LaraSMovingIn) are "some" pictures if you're that interested :)

I'm having troubles with her face. It's too "empty". But I can't draw any good eyebrows for her. Also, I can't rely totally on the original, because of the comic style.
So those who like comics, or those who draw them (simple black&white), please help me with some ideas, or draw something for me please :D I'm getting angy and sad, and everything. :(

so far this is my tenth attempt:

you don't have to be jelaous. you're way better than me.
I'm just drawing with a tablet, over the original in photoshop. My own free hand drawing sucks...

I try more details on the eye.
after I collected some comic references :)
Lips are also hard. Drawing a face is hard. If it's a one bit picture(only black and white). shading with spaced lines would look weird on this picture for me.

btw thanks for your comment :)

No I'm not, you're just being modest :p And if I'm being perfectly honest, I was just looking for suggestions you could maybe try. It's amazing! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

if you had a projector you wouldn't have to print those 100 pages :whi:

Amazing stuff !!!! Regarding the face you could fill the lower lip with black and have a White highlight (comic book look ) check out adam Hughes stuff for that :)

Yeah, a projector would be fine, I know that technic. But in this place, I couldn't use that. That's why I also can't take a whole front picture. It's a tight corridor with stairs.

you can play with perspective in Photoshop and put the projector somewhere suitable for the image to look like from a front view. just a suggestion :p anyway can't wait to see it finished!

here's some "evolution". Stronger eyes are maybe fine. But I cannot do anything with the lips which wouldn't look strange.

make her mouth line more proeminent like you did with her eyes

namivanmar
01-06-11, 18:06
I had a few hours today, so I painted her awesome kitted out belt :)
To do: couple of hands, torso, and backpack. And yeah, her unimaginably face which gives me the creeps. But I drew up something I was trying to do in PS in the last few days, and maybe it's even better after some modifications. The lower line of her eyes are thinner, and the lower line of her lip has a little shadow. Really tiny changes, but makes it better, I hope. So that's how she looks back at you now:

http://siegel.uw.hu/tr/trm12.jpg

It makes me smile now as I look at the picture. I think it's a good sign.

The first try or version of her eyes made her look younger, but now she's more serious. Isn't she?

Dear God! That is truly impressive.

I think her eyes and mouth look perfect as is, IMO in this style (comic book - like) the more simple the face is, the better.

05-06-11, 14:09
Hey, thanks Man :)

BTW. I'm done with her. Now I'm filling up the little empty space above her. In about 4 hours I'll be done with only cleaning and final tweaks to left.
It's about 40°C up here (~104°F) and the paintbrush almost slips out of my fingers while trying to make STRAIGHT lines on a bumpy wall :D

How is that even possible?

No it isn't. It's the beggining of the summer. Each year it's getting warmer and dryer.
And I'm in the mansard part of the house with no airconditioning.

OK it's not 40°C but above 30. I was exagerrating.
At least, I'm almost done with the letters. YAY :jmp:

Nice work, man!!! Really nice...
I also have some murals in on my bedroom walls that i have done, but unfortunately they aren't Tomb Raider, and i regret that. I did something like this when i was 16: http://i55.************/20itifs.jpg
now its finished. I also did the The Expendables logo, and several more........
Now i am planning to do a Tomb Raider mural i'll show you that when i finish it....
I also want to ask you how have you secured it from the heat and moisture, because it will be bad if it got destroyed somehow????

hey man. that dragon is awesome. I never could draw something like that :)
as for me I haven't used anything to protect the wall. it's a simple in-door brick wall, plastered, and painted with some basic water based white wall paint. The black I used is some out-door paint for concrete and stuff like that, it gets something like a thin rubber when it's dry.
