'Miss Ugly' wins plastic surgery
December 1, 2003

CHINA has staged a Miss Ugly contest a week ahead of its hosting of the Miss World competition.

Fifty unattractive women have competed in the contest for the facially challenged in Shanghai, which had as its top prize plastic surgery worth $16,500.

The Sunday Morning Post says 26-year-old Zhang Di won on the basis that her appearance would most benefit from plastic surgery.

The manager of the plastic surgery centre that will treat her has promised to make her a totally different girl within two weeks.

More than 100 of the world's most beautiful women are currently in China for the finals of the Miss World contest on December the 6th on Hainan Island.

This reminds me of that Twilight Zone episode. The one where the patient wakes up from plastic surgery and everyone else looks like she did before she had the plastic surgery.

Hey, it could happen -people. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Am I the only one who finds this absolutely tragic?

This is the sort of message we are sending to young girls. That if they don't measure up to what others say is beautiful, then they must be ugly and need plastic surgery...

I think it's a shame that they are subjecting these girls to ridicule. It shows how desperate they must be to have their appearances changed to allow themselves to be used in this way.

I personally don't see this as that disgusting. I bet those girls chose to be on there and would rather suffer humiliation for a chance to feel good about themselves. It is sad how they feel about themselves in the first place, but plastic surgery is probably the easiest way to make them happier (as opposed to changing society or strengthening their mentality).

Yuck, plastic surgery is gross and so incredibly fake. Stories like this one makes me appreciate nature SO much more.

Hi Webhed http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

I'm not against plastic surgery but I feel that people need to take certain things into account when it comes to getting work done.

These woman are changing themselves to fit into what society's opinion of beauty is now. No one can really define beauty since it's different for every person and changes every now and then. Someone may be beautiful to someone else for a different reason.

I believe these women are unhappy with themselves not just on the outside but also internally. It seems like the surgery would be major; completely changing their faces. Are they not afraid that they would lose a piece of themselves by doing this? Have they become so desperate that they cannnot fathom any other way to be happy.

The thing that always gets to me is that girls are being molded by society to fit its standard of beauty. Everywhere we go we see beautiful people and even the prettiest girl may compare herself to models and actresses and feel herself lacking. I think that everyone is beautiful in their own way and enhancing that beauty is what makes a difference- not reconstructing yourself to be someone else or someone elses' ideal.

Our faces show who we are. They are formed by the experiences we undertake and learn from, they are a reflection of the joys and sorrows we've experienced. Why would anyone want to erase a piece of themselves. But then again they may be so emotionally unhappy that they do not care and they need that quick fix. BUT deep down it does not settle some of those underlying issues- what if they don't get what they thought they would...What if they are still unhappy and they can't figure out why since supposedly they have everything they've ever wanted, right? It's all about what they want from the plastic surgery, what is their drive? Do they want fame, attention, men...if it is not done for their own self and out of reasonableness I don't think they could ever be truly happy afterwards IMO.

This is long I know but I had lots to say lol,

Well said Rogue. I find women who fit societies version of 'gorgeous' to be quite un-attractive. The world has too many blocnde haired, $xxx.00 bo0b jobs and noses.

Rogue_eclipse-I'm so glad you have got some sense and you've put a minute bit of my faith back into society! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/hug.gif

I can look at this two ways, firstly like rogue said that those women chose it and want to look better but secondly that it is a really sad reflection of society. It is pathetic how appearance seems to be the only thing that matters.

To think that people's "wrong" appearance can lead to a life time of victimization/maybe even psychological damage due to the narrow-minded fools is really very sad and somewhat disturbing. I don't want anyone's sympathy, as I do very well in my lifestyle but there are people who refuse to speak to me/look at me as an equal human due to my appearance and lifestyle.

I don't believe in brand name but don't condemn those that do, I don't dress overly beautiful cos I don't want to draw too much attention and look like I'm saying "date me please." I'm not overly attractive but it don't matter cos any guy worth his salt will see beyond his eyes and not be narrow minded. Narrow-minded people feel SO ugleeee!

I believe strongly in a message I had printed onto a T-shirt "Look beyond your eyes for a better view of this world." I really feel people take too much at face value and find that it's the weird looking/acting people who are often the most kind and accepting, hence one of my fave T-shirts reading "It's the weird people I have issues with...it's those bloody NORMAL people!" http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I will consider two more T-shirts in the near future (I have a list) that read "Wanted:tolerance and understanding" and "Look up to few bow down to none," which captures my disobedience to a tee. ;)

Wow Ocean-Sirius, that was great. I'm glad that we are sort of on the same level with this whole view on societies self-centeredness on looks. But from your post I think that if you saw me you'd view me as all the other fashion-hyped people around. I don't exactly follow trends but I do buy brand names and try to look decent and presentable. Would you put me into the crown of people that are shallow and cannot see past what is on the outside?

PS: your t-shirts sound cool!
