I'm working on a writing project that I'd like to see some brutally honest feedback on before I post it on TRF. In return for your time, I'll make you a free digital painting (http://saccharinesweet.deviantart.com/) commission (this could be a portrait, a picture of your original character, Lara Croft fan art, just about anything!). The story is still very much a work in progress, so you'd be looking at character sheets, plot graphs, and chapter drafts now and then. Drop me a PM if you'd be interested in this project :)

Here's a WIP shot of another painting I've been working on:

Bonus points if you can guess where the pose came from! :p

June 18th: After a long hiatus, I'm trying to get back into digital painting. This first piece is an exercise in creating a glowy effect and using more exciting colors for shadows and highlights. I used a reference image (http://beautiful-horses.deviantart.com/art/stock-14-210862204)because all my faces drawn from imagination were starting to look the same, so it's time I fleshed out my visual vocabulary. The model in the reference photo has a gorgeous angular face shape, whereas most of my other drawings had rounder faces (ever heard of that phenomenon where artists tend to draw features that look like their own? yeahp). But enough yakking, here's the picture:

http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/889/violeto.jpg
"Violet." Check out progress pics here (http://sabyrinth.deviantart.com/art/Violet-progress-213774270).

Here I tried breaking out of the habit of overloading the eyes with hooker makeup (making them look too 'drawn on') and adding AJ lips to everything. The transitions between values are still iffy, and that textured, painterly quality isn't quite there yet, but with some more practice, who knows?

I started a new account for non-fan art work, but I'm still keeping the old account around for the odd Lara painting or two in the future.

Thanks! That's exactly the genre I've been drawn to lately.

I've been more keen to do writing at the moment than art, but I've got a project idea in mind that might combine both. The last TR fanfic contest had Lara's death as its theme, but I lost the steam to finish it before the deadline. Anyhoo, I'm posting a sample of the unfinished entry to see if y'all would be interested to read something in this style, or if its too purple-prosey, vague, or violent, etc...Let me know what you think!

“****! She’s waking up! She’s waking up!” a deep voice was speaking somewhere above. Someone cursed, chairs scraped, and footsteps hastened nearer. Lara’s eardrums pulsed with her heartbeat. She clenched her teeth. Earthy smells of smoke and sage filled her nose.

Shwack! She landed a punch into the man’s meaty jowl. His head snapped to the side to spray blood and spit.

He grabbed for her wrists and pinned her down to the rough wooden table. “Joeboy! Get the rope, damnit! Uurgh!” The man seized up and fell to the floor with a heavy thud, fists clenched between his thighs. Joeboy looked up at her, wide-eyed with a coil of thin rope in his hands. He followed her eyes to the hut’s exit. They both bolted for it.

Lara staggered off the table and Joeboy caught her around the waist. They fell to the ground in a tangle of hot breath and limbs. She writhed in his grasp and reached to scratch across his face. He leaned his head away and twisted her arms back onto her chest. Lara gave one great heave and rocked over her right. Sploosh!

The hut’s narrow veranda dropped off into a swamp. Lara stuck her hand in the water to hold Joeboy under. The moonlight ripped and boiled around his bald head and thrashing arms. Lara’s eyes fell on a large bone lying on the grimy planks. She lifted it over her head and brought the cudgel down on Joeboy’s head with a sickening crack. The bubbles stopped.

She could hear her breath coming in gasps over the chorus of crickets, and then she became aware of the other man’s groaning in the hut. Lara picked up the rope and stepped back in the hut. The heavy man was still bent double. “You killed him! You crazy bitch!”

“Hush,” Lara stuffed an oily rag in his mouth. She made quick work binding up his wrists and ankles.

“Oh,” she felt something biting into her stomach. She looked down and pulled out several fine bones threaded into her skin. “Disgusting.”

The tiny hut was crammed with roughly hewn wooden furniture. Cages, pelts, and fishing gear lined the walls. Bones and jars hung from the ceiling, along with curious talismans made from twig, feather, and string. Flies buzzed nearby. Her eyes fastened on a set of keys hanging out of the large man’s pocket.

She stepped out on the veranda again and climbed into the airboat. The engine glugged to a start after the second pull, and Lara sped away from the hut. Weeping trees silky black with hanging moss made an archway over the sleepy-still water. Lara looked this way and that for shadows flitting through the distance.

The airboat hit the mainland with a lurch hours later. Saxophone music sauntered out on the heavy air. Lara sunk her boots into the mud and trudged toward a string of lanterns hung between some shacks up ahead. She looked up and saw a teal band of dawn peeking under the rim of the sky. I don’t have much time left. People looked up from their drinking and dancing to watch the wild woman in a bloody vest sprint across the dirt road into the woods. Ferns parted under Lara’s advance with a gentle kiss and whisper of rasping leaves. More lights ahead! Almost there.

Lara climbed up the steps to a little old house nestled in the clearing. A middle-aged woman reclined on a bench on the porch, strumming on a ukulele. “’Bout time, chile, ‘bout time.” The woman’s face was masked in shadow; Lara could only see the glow of her cigarette.

“I got held back.”
The woman stroked her ukulele absentmindedly. “Well, best it’s time we got started. Come on in,” She stubbed out her cigarette and held open the screen door. Lara went inside and settled down on a ladderback chair in front of Delilah’s desk.

I use Photoshop CS4 and a Wacom Bamboo medium tablet. In the future I'll probably make a tutorial on how I paint faces, though my real work method involves a lot of trial, error, error, erasing, trial, and more error :p

I didn't feel right asking for someone to spend their time doing something for me without anything in return. Maybe people must think the story must be pretty awful if I'm trying to offer a commish to look it over :vlol: It wouldn't even be the typical tedious "use spellcheck, damnit" kind of editing, either, I just want to get a feel for what scenes and ideas are boring or stupid to potential readers. Maybe it's just another creative risk that has to be taken.

I still love the idea of doing a standalone issue of a TR comic, too (especially since Cog seems to be having a lot of fun with his comedy TR comic strip series). The biggest hurdle is coming up with a good 16ish page storyline.

I didn't feel right asking for someone to spend their time doing something for me without anything in return.

The best thing to do is offer to help edit someone else's project in return. That keeps everything focused on the writing.

Of course, that cuts down your potential editors by quite a bit :p

I just completed one of my most detailed projects yet: a cover for Hayley's epic original fantasy novel, Shadow (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=133562).

I used her original cover as a reference for the characters and read several chapters to get a feel for the atmosphere of the story. Shadow is a preternaturally intelligent husky, and Luna has both a nurturing side and a warrior side. I tried to get these traits to translate across into the character design, poses, and color schemes.

Original cover:
http://i52.************/1pgn77.jpg

My initial thumbnail sketch:
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/346/unled1sx.jpg
I kept very close to the original cover's concept and used photo references for both Luna and Shadow. I had a little fun redesigning Luna's costume a bit. Knowing my inclination to paint faces and figures first and leave backgrounds for last, I decided to do the background first. This way the background would have a lot of punch and not feel like an afterthought.

I made many attempts to achieve properly painterly mountains...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t149/quasiraider/trashbg.jpg
...but I just wasn't hacking it. Mountains are usually painted with a palette knife in tradition paints, with subtle manipulation of the blade used to create texture. I had trouble recreating this process digitally. In the end, I decided this background felt too generic and went back to the story to find some inspiration.

Luna, Ethan, and Shadow spend a lot of time exploring some gorges near a castle. I googled gorges and found some neat looking ones from Iceland. I used the color picker tool to study how the colors shifted in hue and shade from light to midtone to shadow. I made notes so I could paint a convincing gorge with a better understanding of how the light and color behaved on rocky forms. My color scheme ended up being different because I decided to go for a sunnier, more summery feel.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t149/quasiraider/colorstudy.jpg

I blocked in the background using a totally opaque brush ('other dynamics' left unticked) to block in the background. This allows you to keep your shapes sharp and clear while you're still making decisions about color and composition. I added a jutting cliff into the foreground for the characters to stand on:
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t149/quasiraider/blockinbg.jpg

I dove into painting and refining details, but something just wasn't quite right.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t149/quasiraider/notquiterightbg.jpg

There was too much bright kelly green going on for one thing, so I added in more variety to the greens on the mountains. I made the grass less saturated as the cliffs get further away in order to push the feeling of depth. I redrew some rock faces that were looking uninspired. Protip: If you don't like something in a painting, change it. Trash the old version/part if you have to and start fresh. Don't cling to a sinking ship; it will drag your painting down!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t149/quasiraider/thatsbetterbg.jpg

Now it was time to position the characters and start painting them. I redid Luna's pose from imagination to make it more dynamic. So much for using a reference photo! The file was getting so huge, I decided to work on the characters in a separate psd file after taking this screen shot.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t149/quasiraider/characterplac.jpg

Shadow is mostly blocked in here, and Luna is coming along, too. However, her outfit felt too generic for a main character.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t149/quasiraider/blahchar.jpg

So I changed it up!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t149/quasiraider/lunaredesign.jpg
You can see I've finished Shadow at this point, too.

Many, many, many hours later...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t149/quasiraider/trfsize.jpg
I used a picture of Taylor Swift as a reference for Luna's face, but she's got some Lara-like features as well.

Some detail shots:
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t149/quasiraider/100zoom.jpg

Some things I've learned from doing this project:
-If your paintings always end up too muddy, start blocking things out with an opaque brush
-Try to add as much texture as possible. Even super-shiny metal things need texture or they'll look fake.
-Always work from general to specific!
-Don't be afraid to change things up and try something new. Experiment, be creative. Not everything about a character's outfit has to make sense or be practical.

I would like to share this with you.
I had in mind something like this when I read about the Easter contest.
But whenever I have too many ideas in my head and sometimes it's hard for me to concentrate on something concrete.
I would like to share this with you because I consider you an artist and I know you might like it if you do not know it previously.

I was pleasantly surprised that we had similar ideas.:)
