Tomb Raider came out the year I was born, so obviously I haven't loved it that long, but about as long as a lot of people on here. I'm 15 now and I've loved TR since I was like 4 or 5, so 10 or 11 years. :3 Still love it and I will continue to...but the classics are the best.

Mid-late 2001, which makes a decade  I can't believe it's been that long already. I was just about 6 when my mum got TR2 and TRC from a bargain bin. (I think both came together for about 10). I got into them when she was done with them. Then I asked for the others for Christmas. Then AoD came out... which deterred me a bit. Then Legend... then Anniversary sort of brought me back :)... then Underworld turned me away a bit more. Then I found out about custom levels - oh the joy :D

hehe, same here.

my mom actually got me into the series. she bought TRC for my brother, Josh and he didn't like it, even though i enjoyed watching him play it. so, my mother started playing it, and i would randomly help her since i was too afraid to play it on my own... xD

i remember playing TR3 before because my brother Josh rented it, and would just play in her house and do nothing else, and of course i was afraid of the butler, so i never played it unless someone else was in the room with me. ;_;

Since around 1998/99 - when TR3 came out. So many years... :yik:

Now the interest is all but dead. :(

Well, I understand why they're rebooting the series for a new generation of gamers, I don't hold a grudge because of it any longer. Instead, I've learnt to accept that the franchise is over for me. And anyways, I've had a total of 5 good titles in it, that's a lot.

Time to move on. :p

Do you play any games of the modern generation?

Isn't there a chance that this (new TR) could be a game you enjoy without it being the same as the original TR games? I mean, surely most modern games are not at all like the first 5 Tomb Raider games.

Encore
18-08-11, 00:29
Do you play any games of the modern generation?

That's the thing - I'm extremely selective with them, and I have no problems in admitting that I still "live in the past", for the most part. I don't like short games, intrusive plot development, excessive cutscenes, guided gameplay - and all these things are trademarks of modern gaming.

The only modern games I can safely say I like a lot, are Bioshock and Assassin's Creed, for very specific reasons (they're very unique games anyway).

Unless the new Tomb Raider "breaks the mold" and comes off as something highly unique and/or challenging, I'm not interested. If it's just another generic, "by-the-book", action-adventure cutscene fest, like Uncharted or the latest TRs, I can safely assume it's not for me. Please note - I'm not saying that style of games is BAD, I'm just saying I don't like it.

larafan25
18-08-11, 00:36
I see.

From where I stand (and see little) Bioshock seems very story driven, and it seems that story plays out in game, just not by removing control from the player.

That's the key. ;)

Bioshock proves that you don't have to have hours upon hours of cutscenes to tell a story. Most of the background plot you get from audio diaries, and most of them are optional; and it's by looking at what surrounds you that you understand what's happened in that city. The experience of the story is therefore deeply personal, and that's something that really impressed me.

1998 for me, when TR2 first came out (or around there, I think that was the release date for US). :) Played the demo of Great Wall and was hooked! Lara's been a big part of my life ever since, and it's affected me more than I sometimes realize (even down to my love of wearing boots, shorts and tank tops lol).

Hard to imagine what my life (and gaming life) would've been like without Tomb Raider to be honest. It's what also pushed me in my art and made me all the more interested in game development. Wasn't the only reason but a very big part of it.
