Hi Everyone,

A number of people have mentioned PS3. But do we actually know anything about it eg: date, technical specs, etc:-?

Your PC leaves the PS biting the dust!

I appreciate that a PC is more powerful than a console. But the consoles appear to be 'stable' for circa five years. With PCs I've had the impression that you have to keep on upgrading to keep up with 'the state of the art'.

Any comments or info?

Well, PC software is constantly improving without the hardware restrictions of gaming consoles, which is why upgrades are required. With for example a PS2, you've got a pretty nice games machine there... but that's basically all. Flashy graphics and stereo sound, but nothing above the mark because it isn't really intended for improvements like PCs are, and therefore none of the PS games will really get to stretch anything. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/privateeye.gif
Anyway, I doubt Annacia will need to upgrade her PC for a loooooong time :D http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

Hi Andrew,

http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

Why is this?

I suspect it's because nowadays most of the people buying games tend to be kids and teenagers, and PCs are too expensive for their parents to supply them with, so they opt for specialised game consoles instead; and since that's where the business is, that's where the companies will be spending their closely guarded, greedily hoarded money

OK Geck-o-Lizard,

But that was part of my point about consoles being 'stable'. Some friends of mine had bought what they were told was the latest souper douper PC. They may have been sold a pup of course. But in little over a year, when they came back from leave, they found that their computer could not run the new games they had bought!

How much is it to keep on updating a computer? Also how much technical knowledge do you need?

Annacia, why don't you want to buy another console?

^^^No. Anyhow, the main reason why game developers are jumping ship to the console side, have to do with the fact that the PC gaming market is becoming too nitch and shrinking. Game consoles are getting more and more powerful by the generation not mention that gaming is all but mainstream now.

Well I don't care what anyone says, I'm sticking with Pong and Tomb Raider for as long as they exist ;)

Sounds like people are saying the same thing, more or less, to me?

Annacia: I totally agree with you. I will not buy ANOTHER console just becasue they continue to change them every few years. I think it's crazy! These are the things I've had to buy and sell in the past 6 years:
-nintendo
-super nintendo
-nintendo 64
-playstation
-playstation 2

That's five consoles! Each one getting more and more expensive. The only way I would give in and buy a PS3 is if I sell my PS1,PS2 and my DVD player. But then...can the PS3 really guarantee great results or advancements anyways???

I think that designers should now start focusing on virtual reality gaming consoles http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/jumper.gif at least that would be a big step in video gaming.

Regarding the games, the consoles are more popular. No one is willing to pay for a strong system just to play a game (PS2 is cheaper and the graphics are nice), plus PS2 has only one button to open and close. The consoles don't require installation and you don't need to pull your hair out if the game isn't compatible with your video card. Generally, they are easier to use and since PS or PS2 gives you nice games, there is no reason to get a PC.

ELEN is right, but like I said, over the next couple of years, the PC gaming market is going to be all but flushed out to the point of extinction. The doesn't even enjoy a varied selection of each genre(e.g. Sports,Action,Adventure, platformer, puzzle, suvival horror, and etc),simpily because everybody is throwing thier resources at the consoles.

What I see is eventually PCs and consoles becoming one and the same...

PC gaming is not dying and console gaming isnt taking over...

=/Well I very much beg to differ, especially seeing that publisher are aiming their resources at consoles.

Look at next year's PC release, and you see only 4 PC titles are the most anticipate;those titles being Half-Life 2,Doom III, Dues Ex and BF1949:Vietname. Now compare that to console releases, that number totalling over 100+ titles across all platforms(Xbox,PS2,GCN,GBA and PSP)

I'm a PC fan and I know I'm not going to get a console and this because I can use my PC for some things that a console can't offer to me (it's not only the games). But... PS2 and Xbox have taken over the market.

Edit: My bad, sorry guys. I've stuck with a PC too.
I can't spend a couple hundred bucks every single time a console comes out, unfortunatly, I'm not rich.

Hi Everyone,

http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

I'm a bit puzzled why people are saying that you have to buy console so often. But surely this is only true if you buy almost every system going! (Like Rogue's list). PSX and PS2 will have been around for 4 to 5 years each by the time PS3 arrives. That seems a lot easier than having to upgrade your PC every few months.

If you want your PC up-to-date for other reasons, and you can afford/know what to do - that's fine. But for gaming only purposes, consoles do seem to me to be cheaper and easier.

They only reflect what a small group of people think...
